two months pass...

anyone got advice on buying expired 135 film? i want a fuzzy, degraded effect, but i want a certain degree of clarity. how old is just right? 10 years? 20? what old brands/specs are the best for this sort of thing. i am prepared to be dissapointed and expect getting back fogged/blank pics... but it seems like a fun experiment.

Slide film is the most likely to have issues (desired or undesired) with processing and exposure due to age.

Other than that, it's a bit of a crapshoot. Film stored in a hot environment is going to degrade much faster than film stored in a fridge or freezer, etc..

I shot some 20 year expired tri-x recently. ime it was much grainier, and had lost some film speed (i.e. you should overexpose it).

some fuji color film that had expired just a few years ago seemed a little washed out and there might have been some color shifting.

Most of the film I shoot with is expired - it was scoring a bunch of past-developing-date 120/135 C41/E6 rolls on Freecycle a few years ago that got me back into it.

Can't say I've noticed any obvious defects with the 2004-05 slide films but this 1994-vintage 120-format TMax is obviously fairly degraded:

(Actually, not that obvious so small! Lots of superficial dirt and damage that I probably could've cloned out, anyway).

People were just as guilty of this using film (Lomos, Holgas, etc.), but at least there was a little bit of blood, sweat and tears involved.

And you know what it all means? It means every picture and every video looks the same.

pictures have all looked the same for a while now!

dayo, Sunday, 24 October 2010 00:47 (thirteen years ago) link

so I ran into some people who were using a fujifilm instax camera, then taking iphone pictures of the film to post on facebook

pretty funny

how did you know? i am getting ready to work on some ambient synth jams.

Classic technique - come up with the album cover first, and then make the music to match the cover.

seven months pass...

On vacation last week. Also realized that I use Hipstamatic more often than I use the regular camera app.

I stopped taking pix with my iphone because even w/ the default camera app it takes 10 seconds to load

Whiney G. Blutfarten (dayo), Sunday, 18 September 2011 23:02 (twelve years ago) link

yeah it's a pain.

two changes I would love for Instagram to make: make Instagram files the same size (cropped to square, natch) as native iPhone photos, so they can be printed larger than 2.25x2.25, and that they make the borders independent of the 'styles' used

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Sunday, 18 September 2011 23:42 (twelve years ago) link

otm

the borders thing is irritating

sweet: also, "we’ve increased our photo size from 612x612 to 1936x1936 on the iPhone 4"

$25 on Ebay - one of the last Polaroid Packfilm cameras, plastic lens, two ISO settings (80 and 3000), scale focus. Fuji's still making film fairly cheap.

wtf @ gbx's photo. Is that some kind of tribute to Charles Burns' "Black Hole"? Is the wound in his neck going to start talking about his ex-girlfriend?

no that's jesse's neck after he broke a beer bottle over a dumpster and caught some shrapnel
