I haven't heard it yet! But I get really arsey when they let the dude sing. YOU'VE GOT SANDY DENNY IN YR BAND, COCKS

DAMN RIGHT

sleeve, Monday, 3 November 2008 09:35 (fifteen years ago) link

That was Joe Boyd's attitude too! But she was much more comfortable working within a group setting, he pushed her to go solo then he fucked off back to the US, and the band was broken up for naught : (

i like trevor lucas, but probably should have limited him to 1-2 vocals per record. when she rejoined fairport, she had to share vocals with lucas and dave swarbrick lol!
on the other hand, the denny/ian matthews vocal combo was amazing and i wish that lasted longer.

With Fairport I like the contrasting timbres, but I've always felt frustrated with Lucas's stuff. His voice is pretty boring imo. Played "The Sea" a lot last week in the car.

I like Trevor Lucas' voice! He was good on "Fairport Nine" too.

He was excellent on Eclection's album, although that's another WTF a la noodle's post upthread, you have Kerilee Male singing in the band, why are you even letting anyone else near a mi>?

There was some talk about the Strawbs, and how their unofficial first album had Sandy Denny singing "Who knows where the time goes" there.

And, supposedly, it's better than the Fairp's version...

Mark G, Monday, 3 November 2008 13:49 (fifteen years ago) link

no, the strawbs version is definitely worse. ruined by excessive strings. i will YSI if anyone is really interested but IMHO you're not missing anything.

also i have not heard Fotheringay 2 but i like the male vox on the 1st record. "Ballad of Ned Kelly" is my jam.

xpost OK, fair enough. Fans of bands, dontcha love 'em?

Mark G, Monday, 3 November 2008 16:37 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah, haha. I did feel this way at times while listening to this, which reminded me of how I feel about early 70's Fleetwood Mac where I think the boys need to shut up and let Christine McVie sing all the time.

Ditto Amon Duul II. This might have made a good thread.

I adore the Strawbs version of WKWTTG. Some days I think I prefer it to the Fairports version, which I also adore, other days not.

SANDY DENNY IS FREEZING MY SOUL "LATE NOVEMBER"

I mean really you can say "what are the greatest musical things the UK has ever produced?" and you put the Beatles up there, and Sandy Denny's voice at #2. Right??? Right??????

... Trevor Lucas (looking even more like my ex brother-in-law than usual) gets to sing a song at the end.

I never saw a copy for less than like $30

Nothing More, the collected Fotheringay box set, has this (and a couple other video performances) and is essential.
