Thanks for the recommendations everyone, I need to re-read that balearic beardo beach hippie album canon thread. Checking out Erkin Koray meantime.

eight years pass...

Great album this, it is basically a fourth Aphrodite's Child album, which suits me fine. The more popular and acclaimed his albums are the less I seem to like them.

definitely - this was the first Vangelis album I got and I liked it a lot, which made the rest of his discography feel weird to me

my pick would be "My Face in the Rain" - Vangelis has a knack for coming up with melodies that are almost indescribably beautiful

one year passes...

Dodax have it pretty cheap right now so I took the plunge after hearing a couple of tracks on Spotify.
Sounds pretty great. What else is good? Heard that The Dragon was interesting.

guess I need to check Aphrodite’s Child again? I had a best of that did not sound like this at all. 666 has a few jams I guess

The Dragon is interesting but lacks the delicate flourishes that make Earth great. Although Stuffed Aubergine from the Dragon is pretty gorgeous.

There’s more Earthlike moments on the Jon and Vangelis albums when they get loose and playful, but you lose the rocking out.

Some great clips of early 70s V in action on Youtube. Or at least there used to be. This one is special for sheer 0_Oness.

PS Vangelis is an alien. Just look at his fingers.

cheers for posting that Odyssey 7"

I'm sure this has made it to ILM before but just as funny twice

"So I got a phone number for Vangelis, he was living in Paris and I went there and called him up. He said (affects a gruff Greek accent) 'Hello', I said, 'My name's Jon Anderson'. He said 'What?' I said, 'I'm in a band called Yes', he said, ‘Are you a singer? Well, come over', so I went over. There was this big guy with a long kaftan on and a bow and arrow around his shoulder. I got into his palatial apartment near the Champs Elysee and there's quite a long hallway down to his living room, and there's a little old man there sitting by the TV. Vangelis takes out his bow and sends this arrow down the hallway and it goes right through the window, because the window was open. I said, 'Vangelis, you could have killed somebody', he said, 'Oh, don't worry, I'm Greek'.

"We Were All Uprooted" has the most amazing exotic misty jungle vibe. Love this album

A track that surely must have been recorded for "666"? This whole early 70s period of his career is so confusing when it comes to working out what was recorded and when and why.

but you can always look into demis rousos, bandmate w/vangelis in aphrodite's child. he does a good version of 'let it happen'

He does "My Face in the Rain" on the same album.

OK I had no idea that F.R. David (of shit 80s hit "Words") is singing on this!

I never got into Demis Roussos’ solo career but the man is a patron saint of all the “bad album cover” groups I’m in…every album, every single, every comp qualifies
