I like how their reaction was "We're mortified that this has become an issue of any kind" yet they don't understand why anyone would be offended. Isn't being "mortified" even more extreme of a reaction than being "offended"?
― Adam Bruneau, Sunday, 18 April 2010 23:16 (fourteen years ago) link
Yeah, but they're apparently only mortified that it became an issue. Not that it happened.

Cookbooks really ARE redonkulously hard to copy edit because of all the abbreviations and numbers, and the copy editor has no way of knowing which are right or wrong. (The mistake itt is an obvious one, but it's not surprising that something was overlooked.) Actually it's probably a success for a cookbook if they didn't make any mistakes that make the recipes turn out wrong (apart from the ridiculous) because that also makes the AUTHOR look bad (this way only the publisher does).
Shorter publishing seasons and a more market-driven book idea also make every project a rush, means there's less time for editing and proofing of all kinds. Pretty much sucks!

― just darraghmac tbh (darraghmac), Monday, 19 April 2010 00:35 (fourteen years ago) link
Abbs: Yes! Although I think the general use of errata has declined since publishers tend to only print the copies they think they can sell in a short time -- the production cycle has gotten away from extended warehousing and toward a more on-demand market. So books are off the shelves faster and the pub can reprint the book w corrections already made.

in Australian English the term was originally a pejorative for "Mediterranean" migrants, though in recent decades its offensiveness has been defused in certain contexts by common usage in pop-culture produced by the descendants of Mediterranean migrants.

LOL I never saw that WogInABox one. Yeah, the term's been slightly taken back by greek and italian migrants (the whole "wogs out of work" series of shows/plays etc) but geez calling a pizza shop "wog in a box" is just insane. Still, south australia what you gonna do.
