ok i giggled here, but that's it

tmi finney (samosa gibreel), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 21:40 (fourteen years ago) link

this thread can be nothing more than a cesspool of embarrassment, given the topic.

Spinspin Sugah, Thursday, 15 April 2010 00:16 (fourteen years ago) link

idk, i get image-bombing a thread like yesterday's but high-fiving each other while painfully humourlessly shitting all over a thread about a pop star with a recent #1 single stinks of not-the-kind-of-thing-i-post-on-ilm-for.

tmi finney (samosa gibreel), Thursday, 15 April 2010 00:26 (fourteen years ago) link

it's what a Lady Gaga thread would've looked like 15 months ago. gotta let it simmer a bit longer before you can wait for the tl;dr analysis and epic cultural debates to warm up.

nu bay deejoning (some dude), Thursday, 15 April 2010 00:29 (fourteen years ago) link

to be fair, it's a fucking mr. snrub thread

J0rdan S., Thursday, 15 April 2010 00:31 (fourteen years ago) link

i'm pretty much expecting that i'll like this album, i would listen to it sooner but i'm awash in albums that have leaked this week so it'll probably have to wait.

tmi finney (samosa gibreel), Thursday, 15 April 2010 00:36 (fourteen years ago) link

there's a lot of animosity towards Kesha, not just here, I kinda get it and I kinda don't. Musically she's a lot like Katy Perry who hasn't been on the receiving end of nearly as much haterade so I assume most of it comes from the fact that she dresses like a homeless 90s club kid that makes people hate her so much.

Dinosaur is probably my favorite song off her album but minus that horrible horrible ballad it's pretty solid.

musically, Thursday, 15 April 2010 00:48 (fourteen years ago) link

"waking up in vegas" is better than any ke$ha song but "tik tok" is miiiiiiiiiiles better than any other KP joint -- perry's voice is just insufferable imo, and yes i find boilerplate autotune to be more pleasing

J0rdan S., Thursday, 15 April 2010 00:51 (fourteen years ago) link

Kesha's joints are so stale it's like she has arthritis people. I mean come on.

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 15 April 2010 01:10 (fourteen years ago) link

My big question for Ke$ha, if I ever receive the honor to speak with her, would regard the 200+ songs that were recorded during the 7-year period while she was recording "Animal." I need to know if there's any way I can have a copy of the 10 worst songs from those sessions as I'm sure this would be a remarkable CD.

billstevejim, Thursday, 15 April 2010 15:50 (fourteen years ago) link

http://www.scotusblog.com/2010/04/first-amendment-left-intact/

ok small point of order here:

On the broader question of what categories of expression should be put outside the First Amendment’s protection, Justice Alito argued that “crush videos” should not be shielded “because they are so closely linked with violent criminal conduct,” which itself gets no constitutional protection. He wrote: “The videos record the commission of violent criminal acts, and it appears that these crimes are committed for the sole purpose of creating the videos.” And, he added, Congress had before it “compelling evidence” that the only way to prevent the crime of animal cruelty was to target the sale of the videos — a perception that, Alito suggested, seemed to have been proven when the passage of the 1999 law led within a few years to destruction of the “crush video industry,” only to have it revive after the Third Circuit struck down that law.

i thought "crush videos" were entirely legendary??

i actually saw one embedded in a "post this if you think this is wrong" myspace chain letter many years ago, no joke. it was a woman stepping on a puppy to death. maybe it was simulated but it didn't look like it was.

Beatweek readers are still offering widely split opinions on what to make of Kesha’s recent avant garde Saturday Night Live performance of Tik Tok and Your Love Is My Drug – but the sales charts say she’s doing just fine. Her debut album Animal, which was released in January and debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top Ten chart, has been catapulted back up into the top top, currently at #8. http://www.beatweek.com/news/4598-kesha-helped-on-charts-by-snl-performance/

Her metallic outfit and cape for "Tik Tok" and her black body suit covered in florescent paint for "Your Love" I guess constitutes avante-garde. Or maybe she's just going for a more MOR Lady Gaga approach.

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 21 April 2010 20:16 (thirteen years ago) link

aw jeez not "gaga is so edgy" again

all yoga attacks are fire based (rogermexico.), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 20:25 (thirteen years ago) link

maybe I'm just swayed by that influences list that annoyed Alex, but the visual stuff in her SNL performance just looked to me like a grab-bag of stuff you might get from, like, MGMT, Sia, Flaming Lips, old Daft Punk videos, etc.

(The performance struck me as terrible -- I like "Tik Tok" okay, I guess, and it just seemed like one of those moments where the pop star comes out seeming lifeless and silly and going-through-the-motions, totally unable to back up whatever feeling the recording created. Which is kinda embarrassing, since you could probably find someone in any given karaoke bar who could pull that song off better.)

oɔsıqɐu (nabisco), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 20:48 (thirteen years ago) link

It wasn't avant garde.. it was embarrassing. I felt bad for her. It looked like she was making a joke out of herself. Very awkward and uncomfortable.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 21 April 2010 22:15 (thirteen years ago) link

Re: the Kesha music influences list.

It really isn't too surprising when you consider (and this culled from good friend Wikipedia) a) her parents are/were in the music business b) she's from L.A., specifically the Valley c) her family wasn't wealthy d) she was actually pretty studious and academic in high school

It really isn't too different from the filmmakers who grew up in the Valley, watched every movie at their local video store, and then later went on to have success as a director (Burton, P.T. Anderson, to name two)

Cunga, Wednesday, 21 April 2010 23:16 (thirteen years ago) link

Tik-Tok was straight-up Jean-Michel Jarre Rendez-Vous Houston steez, from the astronauts to the laser-harp. I dig Ke$ha - it's like Rayanne Graff being voted prom queen.

I mentioned "her family wasn't wealthy" because kids don't care to consume all that much from pop and entertainment's past i.e. do their homework, when they come from a wealthy entertainment background. xpost

I'm kind of obsessed with the way she pronounces the word "couldn't" in the line "if you couldn't tell."

The trailer for her new album is great.

“Life is like driving across the country in a pretty small Astrovan, with your whole family in it, for 90 years. Because I think life is a vacation from where we go when we die.”

A great mix of classic club Kesha and conservational country Kesha. All the preview singles sound fantastic in context too. Probably a fraction overlong, but who cares, it's amazing.

“birthday suit”!!!!

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 31 January 2020 14:43 (four years ago) link

the country-leaning songs here are so amazing that i long for a full country kesha record, but then it wouldn't provide me with the interdimensional bridge between all iterations of kesha that is "kinky"

only track i'd delete from this is "bff"

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 31 January 2020 15:07 (four years ago) link

‘Kinky’ and ‘BFF’ were both ones I’d lose tbh, but the rest are wonderful. The ‘Island in the Sun’-reminiscent intro has me fantasising a Kesha-Weezer super gig. ‘Tonight’, the title track and ‘Birthday Suit’ are immediate faves and I feel guilty for dismissing ‘Raising Hell’ earlier in the year what was I thinking.

I like this new album so much more than Rainbow tbh

self-clowning oven (Murgatroid), Saturday, 1 February 2020 19:49 (four years ago) link

my feelings on this album will hinge on whether there's a 'rainbow' or a 'spaceship' equivalent probably

opden gnash (imago), Saturday, 1 February 2020 19:58 (four years ago) link

i don't think either is present, but the album's offering other pleasures

maybe i love "kinky" bc it'd be a pretty sick k-pop song

american bradass (BradNelson), Sunday, 2 February 2020 15:25 (four years ago) link

this album handles its pop moves better than rainbow (cf. the run from "tonight" to "honey" vs. "hymn" -> "praying" -> "learn to let go," the former is better to me on just a pacing level) but rainbow is still the weedier and weirder of the two? but then again high road has "the potato song," which seems to follow up on "rich straight white men" and take kesha further into the alt universe amanda palmer territory (which is fine with me, she's a good enough songwriter to pull it off) and then there's "father daughter dance" the most devastating thing she's ever put on a record? idk, both records are all over the place

american bradass (BradNelson), Sunday, 2 February 2020 15:33 (four years ago) link

i would prob think "bff" was ok if wrabel were deleted from it
