Common People the best track of the Nineties? What? ILM is indie and rubbish.

Wooden (Wooden), Thursday, 11 November 2004 01:50 (nineteen years ago) link

this is news?

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 11 November 2004 01:53 (nineteen years ago) link

I hold out less hope for my will being done in the albums poll, and I only got 15 of my nominations here. It should be interesting.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Thursday, 11 November 2004 01:57 (nineteen years ago) link

Did anyone who wasn't me vote for Orlando?

"Just for a second" was my #1, AFAIK

fernando, Thursday, 11 November 2004 02:18 (nineteen years ago) link

Man, FUCK a bunch of Coffee and TV highest ranking Blur song, and fuck a PANTLOAD of Coffee and TV and Song 2 even placing, harumph, harumph, harumph. ILM, stop getting Blur wrong!

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 11 November 2004 02:20 (nineteen years ago) link

blur has some nice lightweight songs and a cute asinine, trend-hopping singer/leader who couldn't write a lyric of substance to save his life, right? Did I get it right this time?

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 11 November 2004 02:35 (nineteen years ago) link

I do wish I had the "best of." Nummy little bubblegums on that.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 11 November 2004 02:37 (nineteen years ago) link

:)

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 11 November 2004 02:37 (nineteen years ago) link

blur has some nice lightweight songs and a cute asinine, trend-hopping singer/leader who couldn't write a lyric of substance to save his life, right?

This is totally otm, so why screw it up by putting some heavy handed bullshit on there instead of the nice, lightweight ones?

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 11 November 2004 02:39 (nineteen years ago) link

but "Song 2" and "Coffee & TV" are the lightweight ones, aren't they? The heavy handed stuff is "Tender" and "The Universal" ain't it?

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 11 November 2004 02:40 (nineteen years ago) link

Though I think "Girls & Boys" got robbed.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 11 November 2004 02:42 (nineteen years ago) link

(p.s. I apologize for assuming you thought otherwise re: blur and putting the emoticon and basically behaving like a pud)

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 11 November 2004 02:43 (nineteen years ago) link

Girls and Boys makes me want to stab my ears with a fork.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Thursday, 11 November 2004 02:45 (nineteen years ago) link

gluing steak to my ears make me wanna do that

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 11 November 2004 02:53 (nineteen years ago) link

Girls and Boys is fucking great, but miccio i thought you were against criticizing THE LIST.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Thursday, 11 November 2004 03:04 (nineteen years ago) link

OK Gear, how did "MMMBop" do?

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Thursday, 11 November 2004 03:08 (nineteen years ago) link

Just for a second" was my #1, AFAIK

Fernando, did I speak with you on soulseek a few months ago? Dubstar?

And yes, Girls and Boys is better than either of those Blur songs that made it in. I would've voted for Country House too. Maybe. Like, if I had had an open spot. I didn't.

Atnevon (Atnevon), Thursday, 11 November 2004 03:08 (nineteen years ago) link

i'm against being a whiny bitch about it and accusing everyone of some horrific "ism," djdee. I just pointed out a song that I think deserved some love when the artist came up.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 11 November 2004 03:08 (nineteen years ago) link

my use of the phrase "wuz robbed" was pretty ironic. I find no serious injustice there.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 11 November 2004 03:09 (nineteen years ago) link

Miccio, I don't like any of those songs except maybe the Universal. I like them best when they manage to maintain some kind of dignity. Girls and Boys is pretty great, but "For Tomorrow" pretty much sums everything I ever liked about Blur. It's classy.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 11 November 2004 03:12 (nineteen years ago) link

universal's a great karaoke song (duh). country house is surprisingly hard to sing, they really cram the words in, plus it's a naff tune.

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 11 November 2004 03:14 (nineteen years ago) link

What "isms" did I accuse anyone of? I just said that "Pony" was robbed.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Thursday, 11 November 2004 03:18 (nineteen years ago) link

freaknasty was robbed, that's what was robbed

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 11 November 2004 03:20 (nineteen years ago) link

robble robble

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 11 November 2004 03:26 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh yeah, and how about "Djed"?
(Didn't Gear suggest that he'd post all the results?)

peepee (peepee), Thursday, 11 November 2004 03:27 (nineteen years ago) link

I have not heard (of) 30% of the top ten, including #1.
Suppose I ought to go a huntin'.
I too am astonished by Pony not placing.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 11 November 2004 03:28 (nineteen years ago) link

It's the repetitive dirge of Girls and Boys that drives me nuts.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Thursday, 11 November 2004 03:28 (nineteen years ago) link

"dirge"?! Its the least dirge-like of any of their music!

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Thursday, 11 November 2004 03:30 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, but the bit of music under say, "who do girls", those three 'sound' just repeat through the chorus - it's horrible.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Thursday, 11 November 2004 03:31 (nineteen years ago) link

one last comment about the whole anglo vs. rap or whatever djdee was whining about (also alex in sf). the problem with your arguments is that you would of had absolutely no problem if five geto boys tracks made the list, or 5 tracks from your favorite southern rap (or any rap for the matter) artist. i have no problem with the list, no matter what happened.

i just think you kids are being a little hypocritical. i dont even like saint etienne and i dont give a fuck that 5 of their tracks showed up. its a poll that measures the likes and dislikes of ilm.

sure, its flawed. any poll is. get over yourselves.

todd swiss (eliti), Thursday, 11 November 2004 04:02 (nineteen years ago) link

haha - todd if you haven't changed your 'argument' four or five times now you might have a point (might)

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 11 November 2004 04:03 (nineteen years ago) link

i think djdee changed his mind a few times as well, but whatever. no use bitching about a poll. i like the way it turned out. some people are sour about it.

todd swiss (eliti), Thursday, 11 November 2004 04:05 (nineteen years ago) link

well since the poll does reflect the board i think a few people (more than a few maybe even)(though nowhere near the majority) might be sour that a significant chunk of the board has a 'whites only' policy when it comes to music yes.

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 11 November 2004 04:07 (nineteen years ago) link

and that is why this and every poll is flawed in some way or another.

todd swiss (eliti), Thursday, 11 November 2004 04:09 (nineteen years ago) link

The results certainly aren't 'whites only', blount, it's kind of unfair to suggest that people are operating a sonic apartheid, don't you think?

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Thursday, 11 November 2004 04:10 (nineteen years ago) link

I can't imagine in what universe 5 geto boys tracks would have made a list like this. So perhaps part of watching your favorite genre consistently marginalized is a part of it.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Thursday, 11 November 2004 04:11 (nineteen years ago) link

well not everyone voted for the 'homophobe' option last tuesday either kg but they won anyway, here you don't even need a majority of the vote to get it twisted, just four or five st. etienne singles.

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 11 November 2004 04:19 (nineteen years ago) link

i understand that you can be upset that your favorite genre is marginalized, but you cant expect that result from a board in which the majority hasnt even heard 5 songs by the geto boys

todd swiss (eliti), Thursday, 11 November 2004 04:21 (nineteen years ago) link

the majority hasn't heard five songs by pulp either!

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 11 November 2004 04:22 (nineteen years ago) link

My #1 was Tom Waits "Who Are You", which got no love, apparently.

Hi, I am a genius. a big one. (AaronHz), Thursday, 11 November 2004 04:23 (nineteen years ago) link

Yes, but there were a lot of black artists on the list - not enough, maybe, but people did vote for them.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Thursday, 11 November 2004 04:24 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh come off it Geto Boys only have 3 good songs!

(kidding)

Hi, I am a genius. a big one. (AaronHz), Thursday, 11 November 2004 04:27 (nineteen years ago) link

some people. some people voted for five or six pulp, five or six st. etienne and whatever the correct blur one is (not apparently 'song 2' or 'coffee and tv' or 'boys and girls'). really, taking race out the equation (which is doing these people a favor they maybe don't deserve), this is just rampant fanboyism, the sort of daftness that's not even bright enough to qualify as corny indie fuxxthought. ie. has anyone on the 'there was other even better music during the nineties besides british rock revivalism' "side" suggested four or five geto boys should've been there instead of four or five pulp?

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 11 November 2004 04:30 (nineteen years ago) link

Actually I would like to state for the record that "Damn it Feels Good To Be A Gangsta" is my favorite song of all time. Not just favorite rap song, favorite song PERIOD.
If it was nominated on here ol' Tom Waits woulda been #2.

Hi, I am a genius. a big one. (AaronHz), Thursday, 11 November 2004 04:32 (nineteen years ago) link

michael bolton!

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 11 November 2004 04:33 (nineteen years ago) link

(it was me saying no to Boys and Girls, and I hate Blur in their entireity, as with Pulp, though both have one or two good songs. Britpop was mostly awful)

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Thursday, 11 November 2004 04:34 (nineteen years ago) link

My top four votes are slightly humorous in the context of this argument, and may prove or disprove someone's point, I dunno.
1. Tom Waits - "Who Are You"
2. Wu-Tang Clan – “Shame on a Nigga”
3. Pulp - "Common People"
4. Geto Boys - "Mind Playing Tricks on Me"

Hi, I am a genius. a big one. (AaronHz), Thursday, 11 November 2004 04:39 (nineteen years ago) link

what album is that waits single from?

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 11 November 2004 04:39 (nineteen years ago) link

Bone Machine, recorded in Cotati, CA where I used to live.
I voted it #1 as a hometown pride thing (Waits also lives in Sonoma County, where I grew up). Plus the lyrics, singing and melody are fuckin rad.

Hi, I am a genius. a big one. (AaronHz), Thursday, 11 November 2004 04:42 (nineteen years ago) link

though the g-funk junior high dance canon is actually well represented on the list (Dr. Dre's probably the top producer on the list, right?), I am saddened that "This is how we do it" didn't make it, and would like to lodge a formal complaint with ILM or at the very least find out how it placed. And how did shimmy shimmy ya do, anyways?
