New Chuckie Hamilton... Cars sampling... and, not half bad! Maybe I'm just in a good mood.

rennavate, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 21:38 (fourteen years ago) link

thought that was okay

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 13 April 2010 21:39 (fourteen years ago) link

But that's how Cudi raps. He has this weird sing-song flow all the time... Has any of his actual verses ever been Auto-Tuned?

― rennavate, Tuesday, April 13, 2010 9:24 PM (16 minutes ago) Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink

i guess not? i'm not an expert on Cudi...was just saying that I think he's like unconsciously picking up phrasing that is a result of auto-tune stuff and then NOT autotuning it, like maybe he just gets it from listening to kanye or wayne or drake or whoever....just a little weird structural thing, like i can HEAR those lines being autotuned

is the chick that punched charles hamilton ever going to release an album?

"hear somebody comin" is super dope

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 13 April 2010 22:35 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah as someone who has never heard anything of note in a Pill song before i have to say that sounded good to me

sipster cuppies (some dude), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 22:40 (fourteen years ago) link

working with tha bizness is a good look

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 13 April 2010 22:40 (fourteen years ago) link

i basically dislike Pill, no need to couch it in 'hes good but's the way i do w/ freddie gibbs or whoever. just the way he punches words is corny. BOOZER. ugh

calling himself a caped crusader & shit ... what? so nerdy. about to call the zoo cuz monkeys are missing? redecorate their wardrobe and go get a facelift? wtf is this song even about

The BoyBoy Big HOO$ (deej), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 01:33 (fourteen years ago) link

a full grown dog ima pull on yall <--- its just that hes like the least visceral lyricist ever & even his internal rhymes & intricacies sound stiff to me

The BoyBoy Big HOO$ (deej), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 01:33 (fourteen years ago) link

i don't think it's about anything per se

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 14 April 2010 01:34 (fourteen years ago) link

the lines you quote have pretty obvious meanings

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 14 April 2010 01:34 (fourteen years ago) link

i just get the feeling (no shots) (per se) that ppl are latching onto, like, hey a steady stream of words -- he must be a good rapper. this reductive kind of view, the same basic thing that had ppl hating on too short for years or whatever. this is 'smart southern rap' even though hes mentioning the same stuff as insert-'ignorant'-southern-rapper-here just with less panache & more lines like "ho-checker you can call me scan-tron pimping / military mind gave her antwon fishing / handgun risen when its all about the digits"

The BoyBoy Big HOO$ (deej), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 01:36 (fourteen years ago) link

i know what those lines i quoted mean, i said they're extremely un-visceral -- they dont make me feel anything, all cerebrally indicating meaning instead of creating it -- i like this line hemingway had about how he knew he was onto something when he stopped describing things & started creating, Pill raps feel like describing to me

The BoyBoy Big HOO$ (deej), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 01:37 (fourteen years ago) link

hes like the least visceral lyricist ever & even his internal rhymes & intricacies sound stiff to me i think this is kinda true here, it's like self-consciously technical

tbrrprint (2) HD (zvookster), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 01:38 (fourteen years ago) link

im also not that into the beat which isnt helping -- ill be way more forgiving of a track w/ some drama or whatever to it

The BoyBoy Big HOO$ (deej), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 01:39 (fourteen years ago) link

i dig him cuz he leans pretty close to ignorant southern rap

i agree that he's not great at imagery -- i like tho that he comes off as a bit of a writer -- i agree that it leads to lines like, uh, "antwan fishing" or w/e that are a bit nonsensical

also he writes good songs

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 14 April 2010 01:44 (fourteen years ago) link

this is true but he was getting "lyrically lyrical" love before this tape, so it could be helpful to think of it as a mixtape exercise rather than pandering.

tbrrprint (2) HD (zvookster), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 01:44 (fourteen years ago) link

deej you've always made fair criticism of pill tho

& yeah, you're right about him being seen as a "smart" southerner or whatever by nah right types (krit is getting the same type of looks now too)

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 14 April 2010 01:46 (fourteen years ago) link

(not bringing this up to compare rappers on butthurt ringtone thread beef or whatever -- just using this as an excuse to talk about the kind of rapping im into lately -- also relates to rtc's v. real problems w/ listening to rick ross for extended periods)

difft strokes -- i mean the thing i love abt jacka is the way his writing seems to indicate a whole bunch of shit between the lines, (speaking of hemingway) iceberg theory style. i mean its not like he doesnt have stuff that i dont catch/get/doesnt make sense ever, but theres this feeling/mood to the writing itself ... im not saying hes flawless, but it really catches u up in it in a way i dont get from this. & when hes playing with melody in a rap verse & pauses & phrasing, it all contributes to this atmospheric purpose, like, its hard to explain w/out being able to listen to the verse (not on youtube) but one of my favorite jacka verses is off mobshit from 'jack of all trades':

i scrape the streets, fuck peace, i got hella shit thatll leave you hella stiff
yuh-oh,
hundred-round drum sit round top the calico
yuh-oh, niggas come from Cali yo
ya say its thug everywhere but it ain't the same,
nuh-oh, cuz errybody got a thang
put one in the 'cham, cant catch ya drain (?), slugs faster than a train that'll splat ya
got ya brains on the seven-inch screen i woke up this mornin so yo i know its not a dream
now i gotta shower for an hour no trace of the gunpowder, no trace of the rollo
cleanin out bottles of remy just to hide the thought of this nigga
layin on his back leakin a river

its like, the way the verse twists around at the end from being just **where we are is more street than where u are** into a (important point here:) SUBTLE narrative twist (vs. say davinci's abortion song or WHAT IM TALKIN BOUT YALL IS HIP HOP) where u realize the violence has a psychological impact (or if yr a dude who isnt into that sorta thing, can just enjoy on a violent fantasy badass level) although its always implied & never explicit, lets the listener bring his own shit to it, & implies some kind of moral torment over the thuggish mentality etc

The BoyBoy Big HOO$ (deej), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 01:55 (fourteen years ago) link

the way a verse that short really hits is also tied into his delivery -- transcribing his lyrics doesnt work bcuz theres definitely a performing dimension to them -- my favorite little detail is the way he shifts from cleaning himself off to using the word 'cleaning' -- to refer to what hes doing to the bottles of remy to forget the murder he committed. feels nicely subtly artful imo

The BoyBoy Big HOO$ (deej), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 01:57 (fourteen years ago) link

i realized that i feel about jacka the way i felt about cam'ron circa 05/06 -- when i read the lyrics i think they're really dope but something about the deadpan of the delivery leaves me cold -- then again i eventually came around to purple haze

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 14 April 2010 02:06 (fourteen years ago) link

i love his delivery -- its one of those things that makes his lyrics work better for me tbh.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jpUoX-QwiE0

this is also good off the same album -- i just find it really rewarding to follow his lines, like he does a good job avoiding cliches & capturing this sort of elusive mood of conflicted morality or something. reminds me of some of the best verses from 'it was written,' or a bunch of cormega tracks

fed on trial fightin the twelfth letter
nigga i love the chedder, but its islam we treasure
cuz we together but even the world dont last forever
rest in peace king freek and my nigga nella
since i was a youth i smoke weed out
now im on the mothafucka that you read about
its timing yeah, but its shit i cant leave without
a choppa on o's empty out ya house
one zero zero in the mag
zippin up the ave
insane from the cash, windows up tacked out
think about the scrill i had
i thought life was good till niggas killed my dad
i used to laugh, now i think about if i last
the world very different now
ya wont get shit unless you smash
doin a thousand on the 'eeway watchin time pass
young murderer, bare face, fuck a mask

The BoyBoy Big HOO$ (deej), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 02:26 (fourteen years ago) link

actually sounds like cormega to me, tho i know u meant to reference a non-fake, non-preachy storytelling w neg impacts of the trife life a la nas, wu, scarface. song is dope imo.

tbrrprint (2) HD (zvookster), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 02:33 (fourteen years ago) link

correction its 'i chop on o's, empty out ya house'

yeah we need rappers to go back to being incredibly lazy. i mean to think he puts a bit of effort in, especially at the start of his career before even releasing a record, to try and find his voice/niche! i won't stand for it!

ha but really doe, you know how they always said that og nyc rappers used to make their name in street battles before getting a record deal, i kinda feel like i'd be listening to a 15 year old [nyc rapper] trying to read a rhyming dictionary when i hear pre-debut mixtapes. they were lucky enough to practice in a time when everything wasn't recorded and sent to the ends of the earth.

Pill has personality, he has enjoyable delivery, he knows how to pick beats and his lyrics sometimes work very well. And this is all by the time he's just signed a deal. I don't think any Pill fan is looking at him as more than a dude with real potential. He's Alex Song up in this bitch.

you didn't miss too much. this starlito joint and mainly some love/hate/disinterest for lil b, a bay area kid who alternates between more or less proper rapping & weird ambient spoken word "based freestyles". u can see/hear him here & here & read tim f on him here. then deej dropped by to express distaste for Pill in general & "hear somebody comin" in particular, his enunciation sucks & his lifeless technical flow on a lukewarm beat may get words from ear to head but bypasses all important organs. he then dropped science on the jacka's subtle modulations of voice and writerly psychological realism iirc. also, j0rdan is ready to re-embrace the bawse on the basis of "super high".

i have the lil b album! it's pretty interesting at first but not in that quantity.

i didn't know deej didn't like pill, completely disagree obv, though i don't have much more to say about pill than i've already said. i find him really strong at conveying emotion and i like his traditionalism.

i really like the bay area stuff i hear these days - it makes me wonder why i ever stopped following it after the hyphy hype died down, there's something about the sharpness of the production that i really love (esp in contrast to say zaytoven, who i had to really get used to for a while). i've downloaded a few husalah and jacka tracks but tbh they haven't stood out as rappers to me yet.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 16:14 (fourteen years ago) link

actually which recent husalah/jacka tracks should i be checking...only have "choppas out" and "pray for you" by the former (both are whatever) and "can't go" and "glamorous lifestyle" by the latter (both are terrific!). track names not youtubes, i never listen to music on youtube...

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 16:17 (fourteen years ago) link

whaaaaat? ur the king of fearless youtube dumping when ur on ilx! this is like there being no santa or smthing. u gotta wait for deej to come by and say "everything" in response to that, i think.

Vintertainment youtube above! interesting label. put out that & the hip hop on wax series, some really interesting early records, then seemed to die off with the first wave of independents w the rise of sampler-based stuff & the encroachment of majors, then re-emerged w keith sweat somehow and...no-one else? and disappeared again when that played out?

tbrrprint (2) HD (zvookster), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 16:22 (fourteen years ago) link

i dump youtubes cuz i know that's how to get others to listen! sundry reasons i only ever go on youtube for music videos - music quality, plus (esp with hip-hop) i prefer initial ipod listening so i can better gauge lyrics etc without getting distracted. plus, totally impatient when scrolling down threads, can't be doing with pausing at every embed.
