he sampled band of horses once

I'm really wondering if it's Lil B that's familiar with indie acts like Band of Horses and Imogen Heap (maybe not indie but whatever) or it's just his producer who likes them, samples them, and is like, "Hey B, this is dope shit, rap over it!" Unless B produces his own shit, in which case, never mind...
― rennavate, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 21:01 (fourteen years ago) link
i think b does his own beats pretty much exclusively -- can't imagine a producer would be able to keep up with him
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 13 April 2010 21:03 (fourteen years ago) link
That's a good point. And pretty cool.
― rennavate, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 21:08 (fourteen years ago) link
Also, I'm listening to Snoop and Kid Cudi's "That Tree"... WTF this is hilarious and great.

saw the video, smh
― sipster cuppies (some dude), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 21:13 (fourteen years ago) link
Yeah it's retarded but it's fun. And the song is, too.
― rennavate, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 21:15 (fourteen years ago) link
cudi is rapping like he thought his verse was gonna be autotuned later, but it's not...i never thought about how that could happen, but i guess if you're so used to it you start to tailor your lines to the autotune environment
― m@tt (M@tt He1ges0n), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 21:20 (fourteen years ago) link
it's a pretty good song, i must say -- cudi is such a bad, droney singer -- wish someone else was on that
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 13 April 2010 21:23 (fourteen years ago) link
But that's how Cudi raps. He has this weird sing-song flow all the time... Has any of his actual verses ever been Auto-Tuned?
― rennavate, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 21:24 (fourteen years ago) link
But that's how Cudi raps
and therein lies the problem
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 13 April 2010 21:26 (fourteen years ago) link
Oh I don't disagree. I think it works sometimes, but it often doesn't. I kind of like his hooks, though.
― rennavate, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 21:28 (fourteen years ago) link
Also, Mannie Fresh's "Like a Boss" is DEFINITELY going on my summer mix. House pianos, baby!

yeah, great song

New Chuckie Hamilton... Cars sampling... and, not half bad! Maybe I'm just in a good mood.

i guess not? i'm not an expert on Cudi...was just saying that I think he's like unconsciously picking up phrasing that is a result of auto-tune stuff and then NOT autotuning it, like maybe he just gets it from listening to kanye or wayne or drake or whoever....just a little weird structural thing, like i can HEAR those lines being autotuned

i basically dislike Pill, no need to couch it in 'hes good but's the way i do w/ freddie gibbs or whoever. just the way he punches words is corny. BOOZER. ugh

a full grown dog ima pull on yall <--- its just that hes like the least visceral lyricist ever & even his internal rhymes & intricacies sound stiff to me
i don't think it's about anything per se
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 14 April 2010 01:34 (fourteen years ago) link
the lines you quote have pretty obvious meanings
i just get the feeling (no shots) (per se) that ppl are latching onto, like, hey a steady stream of words -- he must be a good rapper. this reductive kind of view, the same basic thing that had ppl hating on too short for years or whatever. this is 'smart southern rap' even though hes mentioning the same stuff as insert-'ignorant'-southern-rapper-here just with less panache & more lines like "ho-checker you can call me scan-tron pimping / military mind gave her antwon fishing / handgun risen when its all about the digits"
― The BoyBoy Big HOO$ (deej), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 01:36 (fourteen years ago) link
i know what those lines i quoted mean, i said they're extremely un-visceral -- they dont make me feel anything, all cerebrally indicating meaning instead of creating it -- i like this line hemingway had about how he knew he was onto something when he stopped describing things & started creating, Pill raps feel like describing to me

hes like the least visceral lyricist ever & even his internal rhymes & intricacies sound stiff to me i think this is kinda true here, it's like self-consciously technical
― tbrrprint (2) HD (zvookster), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 01:38 (fourteen years ago) link
im also not that into the beat which isnt helping -- ill be way more forgiving of a track w/ some drama or whatever to it
― The BoyBoy Big HOO$ (deej), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 01:39 (fourteen years ago) link
i dig him cuz he leans pretty close to ignorant southern rap
i agree that he's not great at imagery -- i like tho that he comes off as a bit of a writer -- i agree that it leads to lines like, uh, "antwan fishing" or w/e that are a bit nonsensical
also he writes good songs

this is true but he was getting "lyrically lyrical" love before this tape, so it could be helpful to think of it as a mixtape exercise rather than pandering.

deej you've always made fair criticism of pill tho
& yeah, you're right about him being seen as a "smart" southerner or whatever by nah right types (krit is getting the same type of looks now too)
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 14 April 2010 01:46 (fourteen years ago) link
(not bringing this up to compare rappers on butthurt ringtone thread beef or whatever -- just using this as an excuse to talk about the kind of rapping im into lately -- also relates to rtc's v. real problems w/ listening to rick ross for extended periods)
difft strokes -- i mean the thing i love abt jacka is the way his writing seems to indicate a whole bunch of shit between the lines, (speaking of hemingway) iceberg theory style. i mean its not like he doesnt have stuff that i dont catch/get/doesnt make sense ever, but theres this feeling/mood to the writing itself ... im not saying hes flawless, but it really catches u up in it in a way i dont get from this. & when hes playing with melody in a rap verse & pauses & phrasing, it all contributes to this atmospheric purpose, like, its hard to explain w/out being able to listen to the verse (not on youtube) but one of my favorite jacka verses is off mobshit from 'jack of all trades':
i scrape the streets, fuck peace, i got hella shit thatll leave you hella stiffyuh-oh,hundred-round drum sit round top the calicoyuh-oh, niggas come from Cali yoya say its thug everywhere but it ain't the same,nuh-oh, cuz errybody got a thangput one in the 'cham, cant catch ya drain (?), slugs faster than a train that'll splat yagot ya brains on the seven-inch screen i woke up this mornin so yo i know its not a dreamnow i gotta shower for an hour no trace of the gunpowder, no trace of the rollocleanin out bottles of remy just to hide the thought of this niggalayin on his back leakin a river
its like, the way the verse twists around at the end from being just **where we are is more street than where u are** into a (important point here:) SUBTLE narrative twist (vs. say davinci's abortion song or WHAT IM TALKIN BOUT YALL IS HIP HOP) where u realize the violence has a psychological impact (or if yr a dude who isnt into that sorta thing, can just enjoy on a violent fantasy badass level) although its always implied & never explicit, lets the listener bring his own shit to it, & implies some kind of moral torment over the thuggish mentality etc
― The BoyBoy Big HOO$ (deej), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 01:55 (fourteen years ago) link
the way a verse that short really hits is also tied into his delivery -- transcribing his lyrics doesnt work bcuz theres definitely a performing dimension to them -- my favorite little detail is the way he shifts from cleaning himself off to using the word 'cleaning' -- to refer to what hes doing to the bottles of remy to forget the murder he committed. feels nicely subtly artful imo
