dude is so unfiltered it does border on the uncomfortable at times whether it's sexual stuff or drug-addled talk or just following his thoughts, it's kind of like reading a young kid's diary at times.
combination of this and his voice, are, on many tracks, pretty gross to me. i get a feeling on some of his freestyles that it's like, i should not have been privy to this particular stream of lil b's consciousness thank you very much. i do like lil b, though, and "i'm god" is a masterpiece and yes he's a good entertainer, often hilarious, almost always entertaining, and sometimes pretty gross, that's all.
― tmi finney (samosa gibreel), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 16:36 (fourteen years ago) link
also the fact that a lot of the based freestyles are really bad, and there's no quality control whatsoever, contributes to this. i'll be the last person to deny dude has struck gold plenty of times, more than enough to justify his existence, but some of them are uncomfortable just because he can barely pull a string of rhymes together in time, and you can hear him faltering and choking up, it's really awkward and makes me kind of nervous.
― tmi finney (samosa gibreel), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 16:47 (fourteen years ago) link
the based freestyles comp is kind of unlistenable -- i usually cherry pick the songs he makes videos for and then expand outward from there (usually shit that's posted on digital dripped)

otoh dude is so unfiltered it does border on the uncomfortable at times, whether it's sexual stuff or drug-addled talk or just following his thoughts, it's kind of like reading a young kid's diary at times. also u might think noz has plucked this kid from regional obscurity on some kingmaking shit just for kicks or u might even think, wrongly, on some ironic appreciation shtick & find something gross abt that. these are some of the things i thought ship might be getting at.
i mean you're in the neighborhood, although i wouldn't use the words 'kingmaking' or 'ironic' --he just never struck me as the type to champion some random rapper for being SO WEIRD and knowing about INDIE ROCK or w/e, and i get intimidated about even trying to give the guy a serious listen when all of the terms you guys praise him on make him sound like everything i dislike about later Lil Wayne minus the vestiges of a long history of making good regular rap

okay, so that's four youtubes so I don't know anything but it feels like souljaboytellem does this much better.
I'm assuming someone has already called this stuff "post-modern hip hop"? Cause it feels like some visual gloss that has some depth but is more about the music than of it.
― forksclovetofu, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 17:40 (fourteen years ago) link
soulja boy has actually become more based as of late
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 13 April 2010 17:41 (fourteen years ago) link
soulja boy is a less compelling rapper but alternately collaborates with better rappers, so it evens out (even tho there are prob like 5 super dope soulja boy youtube freestyle/one off tracks)
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 13 April 2010 17:42 (fourteen years ago) link
cocaine blunts blog posts + people's posts itt are pretty much the closest to a collective anthology of writings on lil b as we're likely to get at this point, and i don't believe anyone's dropped the pomo bomb yet. i dunno though forks, you might have gotten the wrong impression from the tone of discussion; lil b is not to be taken seriously at all he is a huge stupid goofball who makes silly, silly music.
― tmi finney (samosa gibreel), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 17:44 (fourteen years ago) link
well so is souljaboytellem, but I take him seriouslyunfortunatelybut truly.
― forksclovetofu, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 17:46 (fourteen years ago) link
besides, Warhol played at the huge stupid goofball persona for all it was worth and taught the world that it's less about who you are and more about what they think about you

don't mind me i'm just laying the groundwork for my 33 1/3 pitch for the D4L album.

kanye was called po-mo rap but mainly for singing badly on 808s, but when u hear the hookless early version of ilx thread trib "I'm So Appalled" u can kind of see a lineage to these guys more likely to be called "post-wayne" however dubiously

― tbrrprint (2) HD (zvookster), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 17:57 (fourteen years ago) link
i dunno Kanye sold the POP ART thing w/ 808s a lot but that was probably his least po-mo album, it was all pretty much just garden variety myopic boo hoo breakup songs
― sipster cuppies (some dude), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 18:02 (fourteen years ago) link
i don't feel like lil b "knows about indie" btw, or that ppl think that's a plus, feel like he just uses things he finds like he used the "noodles, baby" video meme like the day it hit worldstarhiphop. think noz said they were listening to a portuguese film OST when he visited his crib, but it's not like oh he knows european classical if it turns up in a track as i'm sure it already has.
― tbrrprint (2) HD (zvookster), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 18:04 (fourteen years ago) link
he sampled band of horses once
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 13 April 2010 18:07 (fourteen years ago) link
I'm with Al on this; there's a considerable difference between calling something post modern because you want to be taken seriously and actually being post modern. Lil Wayne post 2008 is pretty pomo.
― forksclovetofu, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 18:08 (fourteen years ago) link
he is like closure of the rap-->pitchfork->rap loop
― archer's goon (tpp), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 18:10 (fourteen years ago) link
KIDDING
idiot.
this is all the ship's fault for making like anyone thought an occasional indie sample was a big deal in itself.
― tbrrprint (2) HD (zvookster), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 18:22 (fourteen years ago) link
or whoever made sure one of the first lil b youtubes that was posted said ELLIOTT SMITH in the title
― sipster cuppies (some dude), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 18:23 (fourteen years ago) link
anyway i'm not all "oh my god they have indie cooties" and get tired of people who are like that myself. i'm just saying samples like that are part of this guys I AM SO DIFFERENT, WE ARE NOT IDENTICAL I AM A JUPITERIAN thing.

but ftr i already said upthread that i dig lil b and i think he should be taken seriously

lil b actually is a jupiterian tho
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 13 April 2010 18:54 (fourteen years ago) link
champion some random rapper for being SO WEIRD and knowing about INDIE ROCK
i think 'so weird' + 'indie rock' are both red herrings here really. i guess the diy aesthetics thing is closer to whats interesting abt lil b but yeah it's not just a rapper discovering what indie bands did in the 80s is it? its' more how he has built a massive following of fans that are basically plugged into his stream of consciousness raps + performances that are mostly shit, often creepy + occasionally great.
― archer's goon (tpp), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 18:55 (fourteen years ago) link
ok we'll drop the indie thing but how does your last line there describing what he does not translate in any way to "so weird"
