the 1st clouddead album was mellow enough & I wouldn't be surprised if lil b was a fan but the mentality is more direct &very different. lil b's talent is as a performer, so confident that anything he does can be art; publish a book of text messages. indie is the wrong reference for rapping w/ a loaded gun to yr head.

cmon guys surely it doesnt fall to me to drop a sage francis deejbomb round here

r|t|c, Monday, 12 April 2010 23:35 (fourteen years ago) link

that's why i said anticon rather than strictly clouddead though, it might not be that album per se but the "talent is as a performer, so confident that anything he does can be art; publish a book of text messages, loaded guns" blurb all still strikes me as very reminiscent of what one of those guys would do or have have done solo?

r|t|c, Monday, 12 April 2010 23:40 (fourteen years ago) link

no, lil b's very direct, 1st person posturing&philosophising through his youtube channel doesn't remind me very much of dose-one-style ringmaster performance or whatever else you're thinking of (but I wld have thought that's the closest). The almost self-help vibe of lil b is closer to a new age, spa-music, lifestyle mentality, which is why he raps about yanni and not odd nosdam.

ogmor, Monday, 12 April 2010 23:53 (fourteen years ago) link

while we're talkin these newish type guys, never got a co-sign on this tape

yeah i was just rethinking the pop/wayne/indie/manipulation since ogmor seems to be unaware that "new-age self-help spa music" is like the trendiest possible thing right now save a geocities page and a gif of a digitally rendered sea or something. (plaxico can answer any further questions i'm sure.)

basically the time is ultraripe for a pm dawn revival ppl!

r|t|c, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 00:15 (fourteen years ago) link

actually k3vin co-signed it also on another thread, i now recall

tbrrprint (2) HD (zvookster), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 00:19 (fourteen years ago) link

whole lotta people said i wouldn't reach shit/now all the bad girls wavin got me sea sick

tmi finney (samosa gibreel), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 00:23 (fourteen years ago) link

I'm aware both of lifestyle music as a trend and how irrelevant that is to whether or not lil b sounds like anticon

ogmor, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 00:35 (fourteen years ago) link

i was told that i was the most interesting guy in the world by this girl/that said that i can't be with her because her friend had me first/so i say in this verse and play this for her!/your friend that is/ahaha i still luv u!/well...that's the name of the CD

tbrrprint (2) HD (zvookster), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 00:54 (fourteen years ago) link

starlito is such a nice cool smart funny guy. definitely the least sociopathic of rappers that get talked about itt.

tmi finney (samosa gibreel), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 00:58 (fourteen years ago) link

tbh noz's months of constant lil b boosterism seemed gross and off-putting to me, weirds me out that people are actually paying the guy attention now

him putting this on his P&J ballot was one of the things that was gross to me btw

prob worth making the point that ship's adventures on the noznuts are a diff conversation to the lil b one, and since he doesn't feel like explaining what he's talking abt, not a v productive one.

one of my fav things about B is his Vans...

he has been wearing them since the Pack (obv) and won't take them off until he has $1 million

this is every lil B song ever and his most essential links (none of his secrete twitters or 75 myspace pages). it also gets updated. kind of like the encyclopedia of the based god

i don't really know what this means. i've worked with the guy and i hold him in high regard as a writer, i just roll my eyes sometimes when i go to his page and it's another post about some rapper he seems to be really buddy-buddy with that i don't really have any interest in hearing more from.

the ship!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (some dude), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 14:09 (fourteen years ago) link

i mean i listen to a lot of rappers nobody else cares about and know some of them IRL and will write about them from time to time, but if i made a zip file of my favorite tracks and put it on my p&j ballot, i'd fully expect people to shake their heads a little bit.

the ship!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (some dude), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 14:13 (fourteen years ago) link

well that's not gross that's just annoying for u

tbrrprint (2) HD (zvookster), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 14:15 (fourteen years ago) link

i didn't realize u use gross in a Clueless way, thought u meant something by it

tbrrprint (2) HD (zvookster), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 14:19 (fourteen years ago) link

well i'm just kinda ocd about these things, the idea of a year-end list having an 'album' that originated in your brain or hard drive, same reason i gave forks a hard time about his youtube things. anyway it's news to me that i'm some kind of hater or groupie of someone i regard as a peer who regards me as a peer, but w/e.

the ship!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (some dude), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 14:19 (fourteen years ago) link

lol "who regards me as a peer" braggin 2010

u said u found his lil b coverage gross & off-putting, that's the context for ur adventures itt, no need to look wider. u can make it all abt the p&j ballot if u want but that's a retreat & confusing gross with gauche in any case

tbrrprint (2) HD (zvookster), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 14:25 (fourteen years ago) link

if u don't find anything deeper wrong with it or repulsive then gross was a weird word is what i'm saying

tbrrprint (2) HD (zvookster), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 14:26 (fourteen years ago) link

ok gauche then.

for real zvook i know we got off on the wrong foot a while back but i'm trying to be straight w/ you and not give you any undue attitude. this crew/thread has enough butthurt vendettas as it is.

the ship!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (some dude), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 14:27 (fourteen years ago) link

naw i woulda been intrigued by that word choice made by anybody, it's all good.

i find lil b pretty gross most of the time

tmi finney (samosa gibreel), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 15:39 (fourteen years ago) link

i think i've said before that noz putting his own compilation on his p&j ballot was really stupid, as i could've just put my own gucci mane cd-r as my #1 album

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 13 April 2010 15:55 (fourteen years ago) link

rules of pazz and jop are pretty lax; go ahead and post your cd-r
don't hate the compiler hate the competition

forksclovetofu, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 16:02 (fourteen years ago) link

i think we've kind of already had this discussion, but i'm not trying to infringe on noz's first amendment rights, just saying that it's kind of super bending the "rules" to make your own compilation and put it on your ballot, considering that you could just put "dj jordan s - ryan leslie album minus the two songs i don't like cd-r" or whatever for every spot

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 13 April 2010 16:04 (fourteen years ago) link

if u just mean he's wack, i don't think that is even worth stating tbh because he's a guy ppl will find wack, like no one's gonna say MAN UR RONG to that opinion if u know what i mean.

otoh dude is so unfiltered it does border on the uncomfortable at times, whether it's sexual stuff or drug-addled talk or just following his thoughts, it's kind of like reading a young kid's diary at times. also u might think noz has plucked this kid from regional obscurity on some kingmaking shit just for kicks or u might even think, wrongly, on some ironic appreciation shtick & find something gross abt that. these are some of the things i thought ship might be getting at.

the mouth tattoo on his neck i p gross tho. but what do i know, dude is very sexual and has a devoted female teenybopper following.

tim f wrote about i's god in You, Tim, 2009 btw, and should basically post to this thread any time he likes a hip hop track, it seems to me.

i don't give a fuck abt p&j but lil b didn't have scores of actual tapes & albums to vote for at that point iirc like gucci did, like maybe i'm thraxx had been out for half a minute but it was all abt youtube and myspace, so there's a distinction there fwiw.

tbrrprint (2) HD (zvookster), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 16:22 (fourteen years ago) link

combination of this and his voice, are, on many tracks, pretty gross to me. i get a feeling on some of his freestyles that it's like, i should not have been privy to this particular stream of lil b's consciousness thank you very much. i do like lil b, though, and "i'm god" is a masterpiece and yes he's a good entertainer, often hilarious, almost always entertaining, and sometimes pretty gross, that's all.
