A soccer hat! Okay, I can live with that. I'm still weirded out that they sell more womens' volleyball memorabilia than mens' baseball here.

it's not that weird...

how do you get these 50s/60s caps, and do they look really dorky? i don't wear caps, but the stencil is right, they should be worn to ballgames. i want one of those 70s pirates caps. (MOOKIE!!)

you can find the old time caps at the store section on mlb.com

look for the cooperstown collection. they have the sized fitted wool caps, and fitted cotton caps that are s,m,l,xl.

gygax! brought up Japanese hats. Which ones are the best? Which one did Brian McMahon's younger brother always wear when the For Carnation played?

I have a couple Tigers caps, three White Sox caps (one fitted cap I purchased a few years ago, and two promotional giveaway jobs) and, for some reason, I have an old Seattle Mariners cap. With the big gold S on the blue background. I bought it back in the late 80s or early 90s. I think I just liked that old logo. At the time that S looked so anachronistic. and I really liked Junior when he came up.

Non-baseball baseball caps include Detroit Pistons (yeah baby), Detroit Red Wings, Detroit Lions, University of Michigan (classic gold M on maize blue), Syracuse University, and um, Eric B & Rakim.

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 17 June 2004 22:41 (nineteen years ago) link

non-baseball:

black independent trucks
norcal knit cap (with the california state flag knitted around)

hstencil has a trucker hat.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 17 June 2004 22:45 (nineteen years ago) link

I've thankfully never owned a trucker cap. Unless the old mesh-backed "I LOVERMONT" cap I bought at a general store in Vermont when I was like 13 on a fishing trip, unless that counts. I don't know what happened to that hat, but I miss it.

I couldn't find an image of the Mariners thing so I uploaded mine-

Dude, that St. Louis Browns gear is sweet. I'd never seen that little devil logo before. I might have to get that cap.

boldbury (boldbury), Friday, 18 June 2004 12:46 (nineteen years ago) link

Who's the afro'd Cub s'posed to be, Ivan DeJesus?

Only current fitted cap: black Mets cap with blue bill (I think hstencil got the black-bill model). Lost my vintage Brooklyn '30s and all-blue Mets.

Adjustable: battered Mets oldie, current Cubs, SABR logo tan-and-red, what I think is a Team Cuba (with flag logo, great fun at VFW halls), brown Brooklyn Dodgers football ('40s vintage).

Likely next purchases: Brooklyn Cyclones and Expos tricoleur.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 18 June 2004 13:21 (nineteen years ago) link

The Expos cap is a popular one, huh? I was thinking before the season started I wanted to pick one up before it became vintage.

In the interests of full disclosure: I have a trucker hat but it's a non-ironic one (I think), since it's an Iowa Hawkeyes 1984 Rose Bowl hat that I've had since 1984. I haven't worn it in a long time. I also own a black fitted Iowa baseball cap (baseball being about as big of a sport here as in Indiana). I am planning to pick up a Tigers hat the first chance I get later this summer, most likely this guy:

Do the tigers still have the road caps with the orange "D"?

boldbury (boldbury), Friday, 18 June 2004 13:53 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, I think it's on a black cap instead of the home navy blue. I like that one a lot, too. And the orange would match my eyes...

mattbot (mattbot), Friday, 18 June 2004 13:58 (nineteen years ago) link

my trucker hat wasn't ironic when I wore it to the Indy, er, Indianapolis 500.

Dr. Morbius looks good in 80s Met blue.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 18 June 2004 14:12 (nineteen years ago) link

Oscar Gamble i believe is on all the shirts.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Friday, 18 June 2004 15:10 (nineteen years ago) link

Oscar was no Mike Morgan, transactionwise! That could easily pass for Bake McBride and assorted A's of the era.

I also lost a Birmingham Black Barons adjustable that the Mets gave out one Negro Leagues Day (a prom owhich seems to have been retired). There's a Negro Leagues store on 5th Ave in Brooklyn I've never shopped at.

There's a really great Oakland Oaks shirt I saw in a SF window once but didn't buy -- were they solely an ABA franchise, or was there a minor-league baseball team with that moniker too? I've seen the ABA shirt with the same anthropomorphic acorn, but it's different from the one I bypassed.

The Oakland Oaks were part of the Pacific Coast League professional baseball league. My XGF's (hstencil's least favorite XGF of mine) grandfather was a pitcher for them and she has a picture of him getting a swinging strike 3 on Joe Dimaggio (then of the SF Seals).

Dr. Morbs, I can easily procure the t-shirt because I know exactly what store you were looking at (hippy dippy t-shirt store 2 doors northwest from the corner of Haight/Ashbury).

Fitted Yankees WS edition from 2000. But I'm more likely to wear my freebie - SF Giants PacBell Park hat from a game during the 2001 season.

How about pins, does anyone have a pin(s) on their hat(s)? I've got a mini Bernie Williams jersey pin on my Yankees cap.

You got it. You know that rule where you take off the last thing you put on before you leave the house? (I know that's pants for most of you.) Mimimalism rules!

I limit sartorial expression to my Whitehouse.org shirts, mostly.

perhaps a subject for a new thread, but what major leaguers (current or former) do you have ties to?

my mom dated a dude who held the longest errorless streak at 2b for awhile when he played amateur ball in sd. i also think a relative of my mom's played a bit for the white sox in the early 1900's.

I kinda collect MLB caps. Which I suppose is slightly odd since I'm from Scotland...

I have these fitted caps:
Pirates (Black)
Pirates (Gold 70's style)
A's (Green)
Orioles (Black with orange O logo)
Mets (Black)
Nationals (Blue)

and these adjustable ones:
Cardinals (Red)
Red Sox (Blue)
Reds (Red)
Reds (White with red pinstripe)
Pirates (Black)
Mets (Black)

You can see a few of them in this pic here

treefell, Thursday, 24 May 2007 13:38 (sixteen years ago) link

I should say that the fitted ones are left on display and the adjustable ones only get worn when I'm working in the garden.
I'm old enough to feel weird wearing a baseball cap when I'm walking around town.

zaxxon25, Friday, 25 May 2007 11:42 (sixteen years ago) link

Zaxxon, that is a nice cap.

treefell, I'm in my early 20s and I feel weird wearing a baseball cap. It always seems way too "dude" for me. I do it anyway, though, because I leave home AND leave work at just about the right times every day to get an eye-load of sun, and I have very thick glasses so sunglasses are out of the question. And it'd be even weirder to zinc up under my eyes.

When I was buying my Reds cap, the woman at the cash went to move the sticker and said "oh, wait, do you plan to wear the sticker?" (I don't know why she asked or felt moved to move it). I replied, "No." and she said something to the effect of "good, because that's lame." My response: "It's like, it's new, we get it." Then she laughed way too hard and I felt like a comic king for about an hour. That's customer service.

I like your story, Will.

I have:

* a Knoxville Smokies cap
* a classic Boston cap
* a red Nationals cap with the interlocking "DC" (NOT the "W" cap - urgh!!) - this is really a beautiful cap. there are gold highlights on the letters.

also, I have a beisbol cap for the mexican futbol team 'toluca' that steals the duke logo (they are the 'diablos rojos') and has flames on the bill, and a few kickin' blazers' caps. mostly though, I wear the brewers and the bevos caps
