that's 106 pitches, i mean.

ack.

staff ace Sidney: 4 2/3 IP, 10 H, 8 ER, ERA now 6.09

O's are hitting the ball well, but damn they've got no pitching. 7 game road trip may now decide the fate of their season.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 28 May 2004 13:28 (nineteen years ago) link

The quick hook on Rodrigo Lopez is very effective. This guy looks great 1-4 innings. Even the RSox in Fenway could not touch him.

rodrigo's none too happy about it, either

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 18 June 2004 15:00 (nineteen years ago) link

tonight the orioles walked 13 in the first seven innings--and if tony clark and ruben sierra could lay off the neck-high pitches it would have been a few more. rodrigo (1 1/3 IP, 2 H, 3 ER, 4 BB) appears to be in a pout about his exile to the bullpen...

mookieproof (mookieproof), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 02:44 (nineteen years ago) link

granted a lot of youngsters coming up aren't accustomed to facing selective hitters, but does the amount of walks reflect on minor league training, big league coaching or a collective psychotic meltdown?

another problem, according to tom boswell: this season, fat sidney ponson (3-9) has eaten everything except innings.

Ha, I was just gonna post that, Higg!

So is this Melvin Mora's annual midseason down-the-chute injury?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 15:58 (nineteen years ago) link

pick 'em: mora? gibbons? javy lopez is invariably next.

actually, i think mora stole gibby's power.

wow...the o's have chased boy wonder zach greinke w/ a four homer performance, including moonshots by such vaunted power hitters as karim garcia and robert machado.

see, if you had just taken weaver...

ah, but if the lead holds (and who knows in these troubling times) the o's will have the east's best record against the central, pending this week's series against minnesota.

*shudder*

j.q. higgins, Tuesday, 20 July 2004 18:20 (nineteen years ago) link

karim garcia hit 2 homers and knocked in 5 to kick off his second tour w/ the o's.

j.q. higgins, Tuesday, 20 July 2004 22:11 (nineteen years ago) link

wapo already has mazilli on the brink. on the other hand, they've already fired the pitching coach and rehired former manager ray miller there, so he's not got much to fear in the clubhouse. is it me or will the orioles suck until angelos retires/dies?

mookieproof (mookieproof), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 02:26 (nineteen years ago) link

well, it's funny the way things have been spun about injuries. as fucked as this sounds, o's tailspins over the last few years have coincided w/ sequi injuries.

but really, if the o's just hadn't have done so terribly against nl clubs, no one would be complaining.

anybody happen to see david ortiz's two triples today? things of comedic beauty.

since the o's came in to being, they have the 2nd highest winning percentage in the al (.522), behind the yanks (.526).

3-0 and a sub 2 era since ray miller was re-hired? maign...

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Friday, 30 July 2004 12:10 (nineteen years ago) link

ray miller's pretty good, but is he that good? i didn't see the whole game, but i did see ponson just chew up bernie williams with a couple inside fastballs and a curve away. getting ahead of batters. if the o's had been getting this kind of pitching all along, with the way they hit they might be somewhere.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 30 July 2004 14:12 (nineteen years ago) link

alright, so 7 straight? doesn't quite make up for the pre-break humiliations i suffered, but i'll take it!

still nothing? no comment on 8 straight? alright the mariners pretty much stink, but 4 straight from the rangers? their demolition of the angels last night?

miguel tejada has knocked in the most rbi since the all start break...

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 17:39 (nineteen years ago) link

I think Miggy and Mora both hafta go on the MVP list of ten at this point, whether they win those silly batting and RBI titles or not.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 17:45 (nineteen years ago) link

isn't mora still top five in obp, too?

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 17:54 (nineteen years ago) link

so checking mlb.com, mora handily leads the al in obp. he's at .436 and posada is the next closest w/ .412. he also leads al in ops b/c he has a .598 slg to go w/ that league leading obp and only manny and david ortiz have higher slg's, but not by much.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 18:02 (nineteen years ago) link

respect to j. hairston jr. for sucking it up and playing all over the ballfield when he wants to be playing second--including CF, where i don't think he'd *ever* been before. and for hitting .311 while doing it.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 19:24 (nineteen years ago) link

four weeks pass...
just looking at season stats for pitching and hitting and thinking about moneyball:

-o's pitching led the league in walks issued, but also allowed the fewest homers (pretty impressive on that count playing 81 ganes at camden)

-o's hitting was in the top five or six of most offensive categories except homers and ops (due to the low amount of total bases i guess...fewest strikeouts in the league, too)

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Thursday, 9 September 2004 13:54 (nineteen years ago) link

how do you rate the efforts of lee mazilli this year, jqh?

mookieproof (mookieproof), Thursday, 9 September 2004 14:38 (nineteen years ago) link

not really excited. i think grover probably could have done better. mazzilli seems to have a fundamental misunderstanding on how the game is played.

i think the greater area of concern is beattie/flanagan.

i mean, i think they've made some good deals to strengthen the system and some good small signings, but i'm concerned about things like wasting money on dejean then trading him for a guy they released, trading a young arm for grimsley...

it'll be interesting to see what happens w/ their small ball guys nest season. roberts, newhan and hairston are basicaly the same dude, maybe more so hairston and newhan as they're both natural 2nd basemen. javy's been a bit of disappointment, though his numbers are very good for a catcher and no one expected him to replicate last year. raffy's been a huge disappointment.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Thursday, 9 September 2004 14:49 (nineteen years ago) link

Raffy shouldn't've been signed, given his age & high cost. As for Newhan, I thought he was tearing the cover off the ball, which is unlike anything Hairston or Roberts have done (ho ho ho).

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 9 September 2004 15:01 (nineteen years ago) link

Also, I find it funny that you're disappointed in a catcher that's putting up an 850ish OPS, unless it's his defense with which your disappointment rests.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 9 September 2004 15:03 (nineteen years ago) link

well, my javy comments were qualified ("a bit," i said). season's not over yet, and i certainly didn't expect him to hit 43 homers and knock in a 120 runs again, but when you get paid top dog money for a catcher, you'd like to see production better than half that. maybe some of the fault lies in maz for overusing him? i don't know.

like roberts and hairston, newhan is fast and doesn't have much power. he hits well, though and has the second best obp on the team next to mel mora. roberts has hot an assload of doubles, but newhan actually hits triples and maybe has a little better hr power than roberts and hairston.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Thursday, 9 September 2004 17:01 (nineteen years ago) link

How much did all the Oriole free agents get? I'm guessing Tejada is the only one really giving Baltimore some back for the buck (though Javy does have the 2nd best VORP for any AL catcher, behind only I-Rod).

Is there any rumblin' about the O's making a play for pitching this off-season?

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 9 September 2004 17:40 (nineteen years ago) link

tejada got a big contract...i wanna say 5 or 6 years at 12 million per year, which is cool w/ me. i think the value of javy's contract is 21 or 24 million...maybe 3 years? i know the offer to i-rod was the same, but he wanted more years. they may be able to cut loose palmeiro after this year as he has an option that vests if he plays in 140 games, which is not a certainty given his performance. given that they have a pretty low team salary already, they should be able to make a play for some pitching in the offseason b/c segui, marty cordova and omar daal will be wiped off the books...probably freeing another 12-15 million.

i've heard that carl pavano is one of their big targets. although i also hear milwood, milton and d-lowe. perhaps the much maligned russ ortiz?

i imagine they'll deal roberts and/or hairston, maybe julio, maybe gibbons...

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Thursday, 9 September 2004 21:06 (nineteen years ago) link

is it possible?

mel mora has fewer errors than any third baseman going back to may 21. it would be interesting to see how many he had in may up until the 21st. i know he had 11 in april.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Friday, 10 September 2004 14:21 (nineteen years ago) link

so tonight i left dupont circle in washington, dc at 4:55pm and arrived in my seat (without food or drink) at camden yards at 7:01pm for a 7:05 start. the game ended at 10:35pm. i arrived home in dc at 12:10am.

FUCK YOU PETER ANGELOS

mookieproof (mookieproof), Saturday, 11 September 2004 04:07 (nineteen years ago) link

melvin mora did not commit an error tonight, but there was a single in the hole that i kind of felt he should have gotten to--or at least made more of an effort.

javier vasquez (l): 2.1 innings, 5 hits, 2 walks, 3 ks, 8 earned runs
rodrigo lopez (w): 5.2 innings, 8 hits, 2 walks, 4 ks, 5 earned runs
