Livin' in the City. It's also great for karaoke.

Beep, Thursday, 12 July 2007 20:48 (sixteen years ago) link

I think this is probably his best album (but I somehow have never bought Songs in the Key of Life, not that I've never heard it, but it's been a long time since I've heard the whole thing).

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 13 July 2007 01:11 (sixteen years ago) link

I love love love the interplay of guitars in "Visions", it is a total trip. The bass is stellar, too.

m bison, Friday, 13 July 2007 01:44 (sixteen years ago) link

I went "All in Love is Fair" but it was a crapshoot.

Saxby D. Elder, Friday, 13 July 2007 04:00 (sixteen years ago) link

After further research, I have picked "Higher Ground" for rocking out like a motherfucker.

The Reverend, Friday, 13 July 2007 05:05 (sixteen years ago) link

"Golden Lady". Personally I see "Innervisions" as the weakest of his 1972-76 albums though.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 13 July 2007 07:05 (sixteen years ago) link

Thing. Could almost as easily have been "Golden Lady," tho. Almost. I've owned three or four copies of this one over the years, as well as the "Don't You Worry" 45.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Friday, 13 July 2007 09:17 (sixteen years ago) link

I could probably convince myself to vote for anything on here except "Too High" and "Living for the City", but I went with "All in Love is Fair".

o. nate, Friday, 13 July 2007 15:36 (sixteen years ago) link

Personally I see "Innervisions" as the weakest of his 1972-76 albums though.

It's too hard to rank these four. I'd say they're all classic.

o. nate, Friday, 13 July 2007 15:42 (sixteen years ago) link

misstra for me.

I'm suspicious of anyone who doesn't think this is his best album. Talking book--no.

that would be my favourite, easily...

stevie, Friday, 13 July 2007 15:59 (sixteen years ago) link

i... agree with geir!

gff, Friday, 13 July 2007 16:16 (sixteen years ago) link

I think it's his best, Songs In The Key could be but there are a few clangers (as there usually are on doubles). But my actual favourite is Music Of My Mind because 'Happier Than The Morning Sun', followed by 'Superwoman' is just absolutely incredible

bakerstreetsaxsolo, Friday, 13 July 2007 16:52 (sixteen years ago) link

"Songs In The Key Of Life" would have been his best without the worst tracks. On the other hand, it's a "White Album" case in that people don't neccessarily agree which ones are the worst tracks.

For me it's a close call between "Songs In The Key.." and "Fulfillingness..." with "Talking Book" rather close behind them.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 13 July 2007 17:55 (sixteen years ago) link

At this point, I'd probably rank Songs as the weakest, oddly enough. But even that has "Summer Soft," which is probably his best song evah.

Somewhere along the way Fulfillingness became my co-favorite with Hotter Than July.

Eric H., Friday, 13 July 2007 20:39 (sixteen years ago) link

The worst on Songs, imo, are "Joy Inside My Tears," "Love's In Need Of Love Today" and probably "Easy Goin' Evening."

Eric H., Friday, 13 July 2007 20:40 (sixteen years ago) link

... but mostly the first one.

Eric H., Friday, 13 July 2007 20:40 (sixteen years ago) link

Innervisions seems the proggiest of the 70s albums, tho, so I can't see why you'd rate it as the worst Geir.

Eric H., Friday, 13 July 2007 20:42 (sixteen years ago) link

Songs is even better when you include the bonus EP with "All Day Sucker" - it is a lot to digest in one sitting though.

o. nate, Friday, 13 July 2007 20:43 (sixteen years ago) link

"Sitting"? Wuddya mean sitting? Geir dances like mad when listening to melodious music!
...Er, right?

t**t, Friday, 13 July 2007 20:44 (sixteen years ago) link

"Joy Inside My Tears" and "Love's In Need Of Love Today" are marvellous. Among his best ever!

Geir Hongro, Friday, 13 July 2007 21:11 (sixteen years ago) link

And I don't like one single song on the bonus EP.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 13 July 2007 21:12 (sixteen years ago) link

"Innervisions seems the proggiest of the 70s albums, tho, so I can't see why you'd rate it as the worst Geir."

To me it's first and foremost the funkiest, and it has the least ballads. I prefer his ballads to the faster stuff.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 13 July 2007 21:13 (sixteen years ago) link

golden lady and don't you worry are amazing, but i'll plump for misstra due to its current poignant topicality.

Frogman Henry, Friday, 13 July 2007 21:16 (sixteen years ago) link

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Saturday, 14 July 2007 23:01 (sixteen years ago) link

I missed this one... Quite disappointed to see that my favourite song is the only one to get zero votes!

Keith, Saturday, 14 July 2007 23:05 (sixteen years ago) link

YES! I won

GIRUY "Don't You Worry 'Bout A Thing"!

ps i love Jose Feliciano's 'Golden Lady'

bakerstreetsaxsolo, Sunday, 15 July 2007 15:24 (sixteen years ago) link

how did all in love is fair get ranked so low?

titchyschneiderMk2, Sunday, 15 July 2007 15:26 (sixteen years ago) link

it's kind of...ott. and yeh that's the point but it does fit with the cool/mellow/righteous funk vibe of the rest of the lp.

Frogman Henry, Sunday, 15 July 2007 15:28 (sixteen years ago) link

it doesn't fit...

Frogman Henry, Sunday, 15 July 2007 15:28 (sixteen years ago) link

so for an album that has tracks that are cool, mellow, and righteous, a track thats a bit dramatic (but lyrically, still righteous) cant fit? weird.

titchyschneiderMk2, Sunday, 15 July 2007 15:52 (sixteen years ago) link

hey its just an opinion. i find its melodrama out of place on this record. seems like a precursor to songs in the key.

Frogman Henry, Sunday, 15 July 2007 15:56 (sixteen years ago) link

whats melodramatic on songs in the key? anyway, stevie was doing melodrama (although i wouldnt put the melo in there cos the drama is very intense IMO) on talking book - songs like you and i, etc. i really adore his intensely dramatic ballads... (just my opinion of course so...)

titchyschneiderMk2, Sunday, 15 July 2007 15:59 (sixteen years ago) link

i also voted for city, but "jesus children" deserved at least ONE vote...

forksclovetofu, Sunday, 15 July 2007 17:20 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, well all the songs on this album deserve at least one vote.

Eric H., Monday, 16 July 2007 00:44 (sixteen years ago) link

If ever a song proved "stevie ballad" =/= good, that song would be "Joy Inside My Tears."

Eric H., Monday, 16 July 2007 00:45 (sixteen years ago) link

whats melodramatic on songs in the key?

"Joy Inside My Tears" is an excellent example. May be the best song on the entire double.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 16 July 2007 07:57 (sixteen years ago) link

joy inside my tears is a brilliant song. not the best on there though. that might be another star.

titchyschneiderMk2, Monday, 16 July 2007 08:25 (sixteen years ago) link

Do you guys like Zamboni Muzak or something?

Eric H., Monday, 16 July 2007 18:00 (sixteen years ago) link

The only thing I like about that song is how the bassline sounds like it's trying to wrench itself free from the song about 10 seconds in.

Eric H., Monday, 16 July 2007 18:02 (sixteen years ago) link

Higher Ground

Kenny, Monday, 16 July 2007 18:13 (sixteen years ago) link

I can't believe Geir doesn't like "Ebony Eyes"! That always sounded like a classic Tin Pan Allen melody to me.

Myonga Vön Bontee, Monday, 16 July 2007 18:46 (sixteen years ago) link

WTF? Tin Pan ALLEY!

Myonga Vön Bontee, Monday, 16 July 2007 18:48 (sixteen years ago) link

Didn't Tin Pan Allen give Pamela Anderson her start as a Tool Time Girl?

B.L.A.M., Monday, 16 July 2007 18:56 (sixteen years ago) link

I can't believe Geir, of all people, doesn't like "Saturn."

Eric H., Monday, 16 July 2007 19:50 (sixteen years ago) link

"Zamboni Muzak" = name of my new prog-crunk band.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 17 July 2007 16:20 (sixteen years ago) link

'visions' would be good on a mix w/ sth from 'meat puppets ii'

The most incorrect things I've ever posted on ILM, right there.

Glad you came around eventually.

Seeing him perform it live (and tear the house down) helped me see the light.

Would have voted for Jesus Child of America.
