I disagree!

Well "5:30" is a personal fave -- what's yours?

ersatz (ersatz), Saturday, 3 February 2007 20:56 (seventeen years ago) link

the DNA and Theoretical Girls songs on there are the best recorded output of those two particular groups.

i disagree 2.

i still find it off that they didn't put 'us millie' on.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Saturday, 3 February 2007 20:59 (seventeen years ago) link

i don'tb know if i have a personal favourite dna track as they all rule but it might be 'lionel' or 'you and you' or 'blonde redhead'.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Saturday, 3 February 2007 21:00 (seventeen years ago) link

I still have to pick up the second and third volumes of New York Noise; the early ESG stuff and the Brazilian post-punk comp are also on my list.

I haven't heard much of anything else they've put out, besides spinning Saturday Night Fish Fry at HMV one night when the shift was winding down and the manager was out.

MacDara Conroy (MacDara), Saturday, 3 February 2007 21:30 (seventeen years ago) link

I like Blonde Redhead, but was mostly arguing the point re: Theoretical Girls. I'd prefer US Millie, Lovin in the Red or Computer Dating.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 3 February 2007 21:40 (seventeen years ago) link

I thought "Blonde Redhead" & "Moody" would've made #1 perfect.

But "Can't Be Funky" over "TooManyCreeps" was a good call.

Their Sisters Love compilation* was fantastic. Some of the best Soul/Disco I've heard. Right when I was on a massive disco binge.

*not as salacious as it sounds.

I've got most of the DIY stuff, but I'll probably still buy it. It can't claim to be comprehensive though since there's no Desperate Bicycles.

Soul Jazz is quite classic with the only real mis-fire being the Chicago Soul compilation, but even that has some choice Rotary Connection tracks.

US Millie might have been left off because it's been re-issued several times before. Also, I vaguely remember there being some type of copyright dispute between Glenn Branca and Jeffery Lohn over old Theoretical Girls material. Dan, I’m sure, would have more info on that.

Ice Cream Electric (Ice Cream Electric), Sunday, 4 February 2007 17:59 (seventeen years ago) link

The DIY comp seems a bit weird to me, kind of all over the place, and much of it already available, though I guess it's not for the completists, though I can't see people who aren't really into the stuff thinking "I should get a DIY comp!" and if they did, they should probably get best of Messthetics or whatever.

US Millie had only been reissued on the ROIR NY Singles Scene CD on Danceteria which is a pretty forgotten (and slept on) release. I think it's a stronger song and judging from reviews at the time, was seen as the A-Side. You Got Me had been reissued as well on the Songs 78-79 CD.

No copyright disputes though, Glenn's basically controlling the songs he wrote, and Jeffrey his.

Got the ACR "Early" disc. v.good, nice packaging sympthetic to orig. aesthetic.

Haven't investigated further, as may lead to expensive expansion of musical taste.

The Soul Jazz reggae comps seem to be WAY better mastered than ones from Trojan or Blood and Fire. Louder, more detail, etc.

todd (todd), Monday, 5 February 2007 02:43 (seventeen years ago) link

I think that most of the Soul Jazz stuff is sourced from the original masters (I belief this is the case with the Studio One tracks anyway.) The B&F and Trojan things are often sourced from vinyl (to be fair this is because a lot of the masters for these records are lost--although Trojan's reasons may be less honest.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 5 February 2007 02:48 (seventeen years ago) link

I love Studio One Rockers, in spite of the unnecessary funk workouts in the middle, as mentioned upthread (did they really run out of rockers material?). The Michigan and Smiley track is worth the money alone.

The Tropicalia one is worth it for the liner booklet alone. Informative and beautifully presented.

Just bought the Studio One Rude Boy album. the concept is interesting but the record doesn't really knit together musically, despite some belting good songs e.g. Mr Kiss A Bang Bang.

Daniel Giraffe (Daniel Giraffe), Monday, 5 February 2007 14:22 (seventeen years ago) link

everyone on this thread is (conveniently?) forgetting the working artists Soul Jazz puts out, the analog electro of Bell, the Hu Vibrational releases.

I know there's more, anything of note?

the kwisatz bacharach (sanskrit), Monday, 5 February 2007 22:11 (seventeen years ago) link

Isn't the Sand stuff on there? They're supposed to be okay. I have the recent ESG record, but I've never listened to it.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 5 February 2007 22:38 (seventeen years ago) link

Does anyone know if the first New York Noise is OOP? Seems fairly difficult to come by, at least compared to the second two (which I've fallen for).

jonviachicago (jonviachicago), Monday, 5 February 2007 22:47 (seventeen years ago) link

It's in print.

heard this on the radio over the weekend (specifically the opening track, an amazing version of "Ring My Bell") and bought it when I saw it in the record store Monday. So, so good.

Love that comp. This also looks great: http://www.souljazzrecords.co.uk/releases/?id=27099

gotta hand it to them, the new ACID comp is pretty sweet, much better imo than the first one

I am head over heels for the two Krautrock compilations they've put out.

I love 90% of what this label has released. If I only owned their Studio One and Dynamite comps and nothing else by anyone I would probably be happy for a long time.

one of the main things not on Spotify that I really wish was

five years pass...

So, that Fashion Records comp. I'll admit I'm not the hugest Jungle head anyway, but throwing in random jungle remixes into a selection of early 80's Dancehall and trad Reggae is not the best way to enjoy those, right?

A lot of Soul Jazz stuff feels poorly sequenced to me, tho much the Brazilian and Venezuelan stuff flows very nicely...

Daniel_Rf, Monday, 15 April 2019 11:39 (five years ago) link

bunch of their comps now ARE on spotify, apparently. Also helpful users have reassembled some of the others (e.g. the dynamite comps) as playlists.

one year passes...

The new Cuba compilation is predictably great - lots of salsa of course (though Cuba rejected the term) but also acid rock and stuff that sounds more MPB or at times even Morricone - there's a few tracks by the Cuban Film Institute house band that should appeal to library music fans. Very much in the same vein as their Venezuela comps.
