I find their first two albums (never heard the singles, never heard the third album) extremely constricted and boring in a way that Big Black and even Rapeman never were.

blues rock.
arguably not as good as nomeansno

Marc, your description of 1,000 Hurts is pretty spot on, part of why I've only listened to it all the way through maybe 10 times since it came out. Yeah, get At Action Park -- every full length since has been a shadow of it.

I haven't bothered with the singles as I don't have a turntable, but I'd LOVE to hear them.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 7 October 2005 14:13 (eighteen years ago) link

In order of essentialness:

At Action Park
1000 Hurts
Uranus
The Rude Gesture
Terraform
Split 7" w/ Mule
Varied OOP 7"s
The Futurist (the band effectively disown this, at least as a tangible product, but there are some really good riffs on it between all the radio static and flotsam)

They are possibly the only band I deem fit to be an obnoxious fanboy about on here or pretty much any other public forum for that matter.

They're assholes.
-- Roxymuzak, Mrs. Carbohydrate (emilysu...), October 2nd, 2005. (roxymuzak)

I met them once, and they were remarkably polite and nice.

Shellac is great...one of my fav bands ever.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 7 October 2005 14:39 (eighteen years ago) link

Ooh, they were mean to me!

I still love them. A Shalleac shirt is one of the only band shirts I still wear.

Shellac is made from beetles.

PappaWheelie B.C., Friday, 7 October 2005 14:52 (eighteen years ago) link

probably the nicest band i've ever had to deal with on a business/professional/otherwise level.

how were they mean to you, roxy?

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 7 October 2005 14:53 (eighteen years ago) link

agreed, for being a band of their size/fame/infamy they are remarkably mellow and easy to deal w/

they are also an incredible rock band, "At Action Park" and the "Rude Gesture" 7" are two of my favorites

chris besinger (chris besinger), Friday, 7 October 2005 14:56 (eighteen years ago) link

roxy was drunkenly yelling for big black songs! ; )

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 7 October 2005 14:58 (eighteen years ago) link

well that's almost as dumb as this one girl at my college who asked steve whether or not big black power tools was an "actual" company.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 7 October 2005 14:59 (eighteen years ago) link

I had a thought a wee while ago about the first 2 7"es (Uranaus and The rude gesture...). As far as I'm aware, these are still in print after coming out in 1993. I, and a couple of friends of mind, haven't been able to think of any other 7"es that are still in print and which have been available for longer.

hmmm (hmmm), Friday, 7 October 2005 15:08 (eighteen years ago) link

The Mule split was in print for ages, maybe it isn't now. The others are long gone. Should point out that hearing their cover of AC/DC's Jailbreak (on a Skingraft 7") is a fine experience

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Friday, 7 October 2005 15:18 (eighteen years ago) link

I totally agree.

hmmm (hmmm), Friday, 7 October 2005 15:20 (eighteen years ago) link

I snaffled that sex pistols covers show off slsk. it's hilarious!

haitch (haitch), Friday, 7 October 2005 16:13 (eighteen years ago) link

that AC/DC cover is awesome!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 7 October 2005 16:20 (eighteen years ago) link

The 7" with Billiard Player Song is definitely essential. They played that when I saw them at the Scala last year.

I think the split with Mule is still in print, at least I bought it new for about $3 a few months ago, I think at Amoeba LA or Fingerprints in Long Beach.

the last one wasn't very good.

but 'at action park' was excellent. cuts straight to the chase and doesn't let up from there.

Speak of the devil, they just showed up on Bottom Lounge's schedule for June 27 and 28.

Don't know if it's still online, but the Peel Session from 2005 is terrific, especially the post-RIP-Peel version of "The End of Radio".
