amat, that's what i was referring to. It's all the original versions and the booklet and traycard feature a full discography. It's tops, BUY IT!

yeah i have a lot of fall on vinyl and cassette, and don't have the money to replace all of it on cd (though eventually i'll get those crazy new reissues) so this will be a good stopgap purchase. also i'll be proud to display that cover.

Infotainment: A 1958 single B-side on Parlophone-Odeon. Vince Taylor was the inspiration for D. Bowie's Ziggy Stardust character. The song was also famously covered by The Clash around the same time as The Fall and released on their 1979 album London Calling (MES claims in the October 2003 Uncut magazine to have done the song live first).

haha yeah i bet he does

I'm still waiting to hear a decent version of "Wings" - the version on Palace of Swords Reversed sounds like shit. Are there any other released versions? I can't keep up, I haven't been an aspiring Fall completist in years.

I have "Pinball" from a trucker music comp I got a long time ago.. Brian, email me (you know how to, I think)

and don't forget.. "I'm a Mummy".. which can be found on Incredibly Strange Music Volume 2.

if that new fall comp "50,000 fall fans can't be wrong" is worthwhile?

I'm not a Fall expert, but I bought it mainly due to a combination of great cover/cheap price. I like Disc 1 tons better than Disc 2, but that might just mean I like early Fall lots better than later Fall.

Anyway, yeah, cover = brilliant.

what's a computer?

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 1 July 2004 05:25 (nineteen years ago) link

Roger Adultery, you will just have to live with the gnarly Scanlon grunge running throughout the studio version of "Wings." (I don't know of any live versions and you don't want to buy another Fall live album just to hear one anyway, RIGHT?)

Tim Ellison, Thursday, 1 July 2004 05:33 (nineteen years ago) link

right, NOISE!

AaronHz (AaronHz), Thursday, 1 July 2004 05:39 (nineteen years ago) link

The window sill!

Tim Ellison, Thursday, 1 July 2004 05:46 (nineteen years ago) link

Tim - right. I actually only bought that comp because of "Wings" - Like many of you, I own more Fall albums than any sane person ought to (and This Nation's Saving Grace on all three formats, for some reason), but that's still probably my favorite Fall song. I think the video made a big impression on me.

Another DYNAMIC intrance!

hey did MES ever explain in an interview what the deal was with the infamous "The Classical" lyric that lost them the Motown deal?

AaronHz (AaronHz), Thursday, 1 July 2004 07:08 (nineteen years ago) link

Another DYNAMIC typo!

i kinda worry about people who know the fall's version and not r dean taylor's i mean IT'S THE MOST FAMOUS NORTHERN SOUL TRACK EVER PEOPLE

tom west (thomp), Thursday, 1 July 2004 10:45 (nineteen years ago) link

actually it's possibly an interesting departure point for uh something. with dean taylor's being (famously?) a nasty-white-pop-record for motown (nb. it's AWESOME but anyway) so for an american fan to have not heard of it you're following something from canada to motown to across to north england for northern soul and then back, but eh

tom west (thomp), Thursday, 1 July 2004 10:49 (nineteen years ago) link

course what i know about northern soul = one chapter in 'last night, a dj' and 'the greatest northern soul all-nighter in the world EVER'. and possibly the guy who hasn't heard it isn't american, apologies.

^ GREAT

i didnt know they had covered groovin with mr bloe!
What exactly was the connection betwen 'Telephone Thing' and some track by Coldcut and Lisa Stansfield? Can never remember the whole story.

laticsmon (laticsmon), Thursday, 1 July 2004 12:53 (nineteen years ago) link

Lisa did it originally, I think, but Coldcut and/or MES thought it could be redone better

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 1 July 2004 12:55 (nineteen years ago) link

Coldcut produced (only the one track) 'Telephone Thing' on the Extricate album. Best use of Wah-pedal. Ever.

Sasha (sgh), Friday, 2 July 2004 01:46 (nineteen years ago) link

Which song is by R Dean Taylor, the greatest Northern Soul artist I have never heard of? This board is going to vanish before the answer comes I fear.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 2 July 2004 03:55 (nineteen years ago) link

the answer is: "gotta see jane" and "there's a ghost in my house"

also, isn't this cute?

amateur!st (amateurist), Friday, 2 July 2004 04:14 (nineteen years ago) link

Coldcut had a great early-Coldcut-style single called My Telephone, then they had a cheesy pop-diva album track of the same title with some of the same bits of music, then they had a grumbly Fall production job with some of the same bits of music

kit brash (kit brash), Friday, 2 July 2004 07:30 (nineteen years ago) link

ten months pass...
if anyone wants to send some of the more obscure tracks mentioned here to my gmail address, i'm gonna compile some cds i think.
