2 Unlimited: C or D?

i think in the early 90s there were just much better examples of pop-dance acts to be found, so many that 2 Unlimited felt un-necessary and were peddling what seemed like a particularly cheap and unimaginative take on the style in a cynical drive by faceless producers to have hits and make money (perish the thought eh?). i thought tracks like Cubic 22's 'Night In Motion', GTO, Bizarre Inc., The Shamen, even Utah Saints were pop enough to appeal to the masses anyway - so many truly fantastic rave-pop tracks were in the charts at this time after all. even Technotronic seemed much better. after 'No Limit' (it is still quite amazing this track was number 1 for SIX weeks at the start of 1993 - or was it 94?) tho which seemed to be the low point i actually didn't mind any of the singles after that (i THINK 'Faces', 'Maximum Overdrive', 'Let The Beat Control Your Body' and 'No-One' all came after it anyway) but their popularity waned after the 'no lyrics' 'hilarity' peaked.

Utah Saints?? You are clearly mad, steve!!!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 11 December 2003 15:03 (twenty years ago) link

Pete Waterman is hardly faceless!

Yeah I see what you mean - I thought they did it well, though "The Workaholic" and "Get Ready For This" are both more pumping-good than "No Limits". Not as good as Utah Saints first two or three hits I'll grant you.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 11 December 2003 15:04 (twenty years ago) link

2 Unlimited are great, anyway, ESPECIALLY "No Limits"!!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 11 December 2003 15:04 (twenty years ago) link

They omitted Ray's raps in the UK? This was news to me. Why did they do so, did the raps sound too silly for native English-speakers? Did they omit the part in "No Limits" where he goes "TECHNO TECHNO TECHNO TECHNO" as well?

As for my opinion, 2 Unlimited were not that bad, they were the prototypical europop group, but there were many better acts that came later. Like Culture Beat, Cappella or Leila K.

Judging from the amount of europop threads we have right now, I think some sort of revival might be around the corner... The Snap! remixes are quite popular right now, and Haddaway's "What Is Love" was a minor radio hit (again) a couple of years ago, at least in Finland. Also, some Finnish entrepreneur has already started an monthly europop revival club. I bet were going to see an "ironic" europop retro-act emerging in a short time.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 11 December 2003 15:06 (twenty years ago) link

By the way, I still think Utah Saints' first LP is one of the best records ever released, though I might be alone with this opinion...

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 11 December 2003 15:07 (twenty years ago) link

heh, when i said 'rubbish act obv.' the 'obv.' was referring to the fact that 'obviously i, stevem, would think they were rubbish' not that this was the universal assumption.

Utah Saints had good taste in samples (Kate Bush, Human League, the other song that makes up 'Believe In Me') - 'No Limits' is just not very smart (or fun, for me)

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 11 December 2003 15:08 (twenty years ago) link

"good taste in samples"?!??! steve your dance rockism never ceases to amaze me.

TS: 2 Unlimited vs Sunscreem + Opus III

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 11 December 2003 15:10 (twenty years ago) link

Leila K predated 2 Unlimited I thought. "Got To Get" is earlier certainly.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 11 December 2003 15:11 (twenty years ago) link

Don't know about the samples, but that Utah Saints LP kicks ass! It hasn't got a single weak track! Even AMG gave is four stars!

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 11 December 2003 15:13 (twenty years ago) link

Haha actually 2 Unlimited vs C+C Music Factory!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 11 December 2003 15:13 (twenty years ago) link

dont make me choose!!

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 11 December 2003 15:13 (twenty years ago) link

i almost got beat up for championing c+c music factory in 6th grade.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 11 December 2003 15:14 (twenty years ago) link

Utah Saints sampled fantastic songs in order to have hits! this i love when it's done well - i think they DID do it well

i guess i was very fickle about my europop/dance. i liked Rob n' Raz altho they were a good couple of years before 2 Unlimited (i could SMELL the Waterman influence i guess, thus utter contempt, altho i'm assuming he was merely in an 'excutive producer' role for them if anything).

we did get the 'TECHNO TECHNO TECHNO TECHNO' tho, as 'hilariously' parodies by The Bluebells when they performed 'Young At Heart' on TOTP (they also referenced Shabba Ranks one week, fact fans)

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 11 December 2003 15:15 (twenty years ago) link

Okay, but no one's still explained why the raps were censored...

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 11 December 2003 15:16 (twenty years ago) link

I dont know what role he played exactly, it's on my "Best of Pete Waterman" 2CD compo though so it must be true.

At the time I remember a lot of hostility towards Utah Saints from proper music fans for their abuse of K Bush so their evil rockist scheme backfired, awesome single though.

Tuomas I think the record company foolishly decided that scando rap lacked the realness, then along came Dr Alban and they were persuaded otherwise.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 11 December 2003 15:17 (twenty years ago) link

Even though I am Dutch, I would go for Dud.

Please do but remember the man behind the two puppets was Belgian. It all ties together with Frigging DeWaele Bros. Leila K did predate the band and was much better. Gawd I hated 2 Unltd. They never seemed to be out of the charts.

Does anyone else remember that fantastic untitled track at the end of the first C+C Music Factory album?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 11 December 2003 15:24 (twenty years ago) link

I say classic, even if they didn't record 'The Key, The Secret' (my standard for judging groups of this era/genre).

Barima (Barima), Friday, 12 December 2003 06:58 (twenty years ago) link

Steve, I'd say yes they were, especially considering the huge number of condom wrappers in the bedside ashtray.

chris (chris), Friday, 12 December 2003 10:29 (twenty years ago) link

any Dutch caps? (ew)

stevem (blueski), Friday, 12 December 2003 12:39 (twenty years ago) link

HAHA Barima I was going to make a post yesterday along the lines of "'The Key, The Secret' would have been fantastic if 2 Unlimited had done it"!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 12 December 2003 14:10 (twenty years ago) link

2 Unlimited were my first favourite band! I had their first three albums! (And possibly still do, on chewed-up cassette somewhere.)

"No One" and "Magic Friend" were the best of their output, I remember being very upset when both failed to hit the top 10.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 12 December 2003 14:25 (twenty years ago) link

"Magic Friend" was my favourite too!

"'cos magic friend is what he is!"

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 12 December 2003 14:28 (twenty years ago) link

"Don't be afraid, he's just the magic friend!"

Among the best uses of whispers in pop music, ever.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 12 December 2003 14:34 (twenty years ago) link

i didn't remember 'Magic Friend' until late last night but yeah i thought that one was okay

stevem (blueski), Friday, 12 December 2003 14:59 (twenty years ago) link

But Dan, even if 2 Unlimited might have made better producers, none of those acts can touch Diane Charlemagne's vocals, which were so necessary.

I think I might remember an echo of 'Magic Friend' in this old mind of mine (I WAS THERE! I was there, playing the Prodigy, to the pop kids, in my dormitory at school (they didn't get it)).

Barima (Barima), Friday, 12 December 2003 15:19 (twenty years ago) link

two years pass...
2 Unlimited were and are the original hard pop/dance artists... At least they didn't massacre's others music for their own profit. :P

Still are my fave band of all time, and up there alongside them are Ultrasonic, Dyewitness, Godsmack, Korn and Lacuna Coil... Even with my diverse taste in music they are still number one. Bring back Ray and Anita!

Thank you, YouTube.

This is how I remember it in '93 in Quebec City dance clubs - pinball!

I think "All I Want" was a better Captain Hollywood single, but I can't find the video on Youtube. But I think this deserves a thred of it's own:

Nineties Eurodance Yotube thread.

one year passes...

The 2 Unlimited comp I have (Unlimited Hits) unfortunately has all the raps left in. Of course, if the comp had only versions with the raps taken out, I think I would have been just as annoyed. Is there another 2 Unlimited comp with the same songs but the mainly vocalless versions?

musically, Monday, 3 March 2008 03:29 (sixteen years ago) link

Couldn't stand them when they were huge, and would complain loudly about them to anyone who'd listen. Years later, I can appreciate them as fun pop, and the production holds up nicely.

Tantrum The Cat, Monday, 3 March 2008 05:16 (sixteen years ago) link

Why should the raps be left out? Euro-rapping was an essential part of Eurodance, and a big part of its charm.

Tuomas, Monday, 3 March 2008 13:40 (sixteen years ago) link

Personally I preferred Martha Wash, as far as this sort of thing is concerned. But I had no problem with 2 Unlimited - they served their purpose. (Almost bought No Limits used back in '95 or so.) Omitting the raps was certainly a good idea.

Myonga Vön Bontee, Monday, 3 March 2008 16:55 (sixteen years ago) link

i'm not getting how 2 Unlimited and Martha Wash are connected!

blueski, Monday, 3 March 2008 17:17 (sixteen years ago) link

A guilty pleasure, but what a pleasure.

Let The Beat Control Your Body and Tribsl Dance are forgotten yet phenomenal.

In some way.

Toucan3000, Monday, 3 March 2008 21:54 (sixteen years ago) link

Well, "Martha Wash" was just a concise way of referring to C+C Music Factory, Black Box and whoever else she sang for. All of 'em cranked out the Hi-NRG jams that, throughout the '90s, were as ubiquitous at North American sporting events as in dance clubs. I tend(ed) to lump 'em all together regardless of how much/little they actually had in common sonically.

Myonga Vön Bontee, Monday, 3 March 2008 23:38 (sixteen years ago) link

First album i bought was 'No Limits', yes i am that cool, deal with it.

Get ready for this still sounds pretty good these days
