I just finished a few minutes ago playing some bass to a CD of my bands tunes and a couple of demos. I am now listening to 'Herded into Pools' off of Mr. Machinery Operator by fIREHOSE.

A tape I made in '96 off college radio. Right now: 10 Days Late - "Out of Tune". Also on this side (my feelings about these vary):

John Coltrane - Countdown
Buzzcocks - ESP
Custom Floor - Super Eight Movie
an Unrest song
Bikini Kill - I Like Fucking
Spitboy - Motivated by Fear
Punchbuggy - Lose
a great Digable Planets song
Hush Harbour - Supposed to Be About an Electrical Fire
Superchunk - Cadmium

The other side includes Soul-Junk, Hair & Skin Trading Co, Gigantor, Money Mark, Capt Beefheart, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk. I've been weirdly curious about indie rock the last couple days.

Portable CD player that I use at work (unloading trucks) is a Sony that plays Atracs, so a mix of 100 different songs on one disk, basically my faves... mostly made up of Neil Young, Rolling Stones, KISS, Black Sabbath, Queen, Metallica (Pre 87), Talking Heads and then a bunch of random shit. Just before that was Neil Young's "Greendale"

In my DVD player at home is Ah Via Musicom by Eric Johnson

The CD player next to my bed has Black Sabbath "Heaven and Hell"

The tape deck in my car has Black Sabbath "Paranoid"

The CD player on this computer is Rolling Stones "Tattoo You" which I just burned but felt the need to listen to.

The tape deck in my garage has Daniel Lavoie's 1994 album "Woman to Man"

All of these have been listened to in the past 24 hours...

but what do I have on right now? George Michael "Faith" on Winamp, and prolly gonna turn to some Suede next.

Just finished listening to Carpathian Forest's "Strange old brew", which isn't really much of anything. Competent and tedious.

Now listening to White Willow's "Ignis fatuus" which I feel pretty much the same about. Light symphonic progrock, not as cheesy as their "Sacrament" album, but still nothing to click my tongue enthusiastically about.

A C90 from 5 years ago that contains (so far):

Ween's "Freedom of '76"
Critters Buggin's "BH Goes to a Freak"
John Frusciante's cover of Bad Brains' "The Big Takeover"
Miles Davis' "Black Satin"
311's "Running"
Bob Marley's "Small Axe"

It's on "Small Axe" right now. I have no idea what's next. I think I made this mix to listen to while riding my bike.

Roni Size remix of a shitload of Soul Coughing songs (bad-fuckin-ass!)
Beastie Boys' "And Me"
Jimi Hendrix' "If 6 Was 9"
Bjork's "Big Time Sensuality"
Sly and the Family Stone's "Dance to The Music"*
Beck "Whiskey-Faced Radioactive Blowdryer Lady"

*this was off an LP, I was smokin' some DANK while making this mix, and it skipped during the drum-break on the beat...about 7 minutes go by until I'm like "wait, WHAT THE SHIT?", kick the stereo, and it goes right into the song like it was meant to be that way; I played this for my buddy and he was like "damn is this live? that drum break is AWESOME!". He smokes way more weed than I ever have or ever will, btw.

this from days ago, so lost to history, but i only know the two most recent sun araw full lengths: heavy deeds and on patrol. both are fantastic. i.e., much more great than most things routinely described as great. some of the best stretchy head psychedelic guitar music i've heard in years.

j geils band - full house

just cued up used copy i bought for $2, cuz everybody had such great things to say about it on the j geils thread. sounds like king khan & the shrines took a LOT of pointers from this record, though it's hardly an unfamiliar sound. "first i look at the purse" would fit in seamlessly on three hairs & you're mine or what is. "homework" is more sultry, but no less ott. nice.

hey daniel, glad you got that message. dunno whether or not you've downloaded anything yet, but my take is that heavy deeds is the more burning, intense & rock-oriented of the two albums, big debt to lysergic heavy psyche of the 60s & 70s, coming off like funky hawkwind or some shit. tunes and playing recall acid rock and dr. john style voodoo funk, with some talking heads/eno style 2nd hand africanisms. on patrol is more hazy and abstract, with much sparer and less frenzied guitar playing (not that stallones ever gets all that frenzied anyway). tunes are less direct, more hypnotic & intuitive, almost accidental seeming, but in a good way. big dub influence, but debts to direct precedents in 60s/70s rock are comparatively few.

j geils is some corny shit. digging it when they're on fire, but the shtick in between gets old fast.

Daniel Esq you should know that Sun Araw's music doesn't come with the usual verse/chorus structure, or even an obvious sense of progression. what he does with his chanted voices, looped guitar, dub effects, and conga pulses is create a huge vibrating canyon of movement-in-place that feels shamanic, a unique blend of blues and soul signifiers floating in space. So, not songs per se, but very trance-inducing music for seekers
I like the "Heavy Deeds" album but prefer the sparser dubbier aspects of "On Patrol"
