just listened to yours mine and ours for the first time in a while over the weekend - pretty great record. haven't been in love with the last few things pernice has done, but he did have quite a winning streak going there for a while.

guess there is also this which i also heard about and forgot:The New Mendicants are Mike Belitsky, Norman Blake and Joe Pernice. This, their first recording, was produced by Norman (with help from Mike and Joe) in Toronto, where they all live now. This 6-song CD EP was put together so Norman and Joe would have something to sell on their January/February 2013 tour of Australia. (Mike wasn't actually in the band on its first day, when the touring plan was hatched and flights were purchased. He joined on the 7th day.) It contains 3 brand new songs, plus 2 instances of Joe and Norman covering themselves (tres postmodern) and one INXS cover (The Australian government requires musicians wishing to tour Australia release an INXS cover before they will issue the necessary work visas. But luckily, they had some good songs.)

new scud record is pretty damn good, only a couple clunkers in there. might be my favorite pernice thing in quite a while. the bonus disc that came w/ pre-orders has three great outtakes from the mid 90s. he can be such a great melody writer -- title aside, i can imagine dionne warwick tackling "son of a bitch."

The section around 2:28 is perfection.
Website hasn't been updated since the 2015 Roger Lion release, but still hold out hope they put out another album on the same level as Overcome by Happiness or The World Won't End. I go back and forth between ObH, TWWE, and YM&O as my favorite PB release, though no real need to choose.

Well, I get that Spotify is not always good or worthwhile for audiences so more power to him for keeping it off the platform. But personally my audio set-up is such that if it's not on Spotify I'm most likely not going to hear it. I know it's *possible* to hear it but I basically manage all my music through my phone these days and everything is done through the Spotify app. I don't have a home stereo or even a home computer.

(which is not to say I don't adore their records up until "Hello Killer")
On June 19, 2020 I will release a solo album. It’s called RICHARD. It’s basically me and a nylon string guitar I recorded in my basement bike shop during Covid lockdown. There are no world-altering songs of protest on it. There are no songs that poetically and compassionately describe the lives of our fellow citizens who have lived within a system braided with racism. I wish I could write that song. God, knows I have tried, but they always come up short. (Maybe the title song goes part of the way there. I don’t know.)

Ooh, thanks for that. Speaking of a Pernice and a guitar, I watched The Half of It on Netflix and was surprised to learn from the credits that he wrote its talent show ballad. It's a whole new era of earnest YouTubers covering him.

Totally missed that the Pernice Brothers released an album four years ago, their first album in ... 10 years? Anyway, it's great. Of course it's great. I'm seeing Joe Pernice perform a solo living room show tonight so have been playing a bit of catchup, and really, it's *all* great. Or at the least very good. As Soto would say, sound/solid.

Oh nice, I went to the Minneapolis show on Friday, it was lovely. I think well over half of what he played was new songs from upcoming projects, including the new Pernice Brothers album, finished and out next year. Lots to look forward to: what he called his first proper duet (recorded with Neko Case) and first soul song (recorded with a full string section), a song from a solo country album, a beautiful David Berman tribute. Great lines across all of those, and the rest, and so great to hear his voice in such a quiet room.
― soup of magpies (geoffreyess), Sunday, 5 November 2023 23:56 (five months ago) link
Yeah, he played a lot of those tonight. I guess he doesn't really tour much anymore? He said the last time he played Chicago was maybe 2006, Minneapolis was probably similar. His voice sounded incredible. I bought a poster, love that in a few days he is playing at Sean's Veterinary Practice in Pittsburgh.

All of this is to say that he’d like to do more. And the timing is good, because we are all waiting for something that’s happening in the spring that we can’t officially tell you about even though you likely already know. Are you a middle-to-late middled aged person who always wanted to be a concert promoter but was thwarted when real life got in the way? Here’s your chance! These things work best if you have a social network of the non-computer variety. If this is something you would like to explore with us, you can fill out this little survey we put together:(https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSf6Bk2YMsCBkmxMG7C0D84cJ48Xj21ZlEe-7NbgDTwdV--McA/viewform) and I will be in touch. That will help us figure out if there is a cluster of shows that might make sense.

i grabbed that big Overcome By Happiness reissue recently — a pricey collection, but really nicely done. And some of the bonus stuff is very good. I haven't loved anything Joe's done in a little while (not that I've *hated* anything), but he really had an amazing late 90s / early 2000s run. even the side projects (chappaquidick skyline, big tobacco) are terrific.

My top 5 is also a reflection of when I was deepest into him - probably 98-01. Adored Mass/Overcome. Chappaquiddick and Big Tobacco were new releases at the peak of my fandom. By the time of The World Won’t End and the string of PB albums in the early 00s, I loved them but had five other albums I’d already worn out, so it was hard for me to fully rate them above the others although I know a lot of folks do.At some point early on I went back to the Early Year and felt like those two albums were an otherworldly revelation, thanks in no small part to the other songwriter who feels like a lost genius! (Truthfully I’ve never been 100% certain of which guy was the other primary songwriter, but I don’t think anyone in that band went on to other things… did they?) Even his one song on Massachusetts is a highlight on an album full of highlights. Anyway, those albums have such a unique feel and are a perfect late night/lights low/drinking alone soundtrack.

After some activity in this thread for a bit, the album actually came out and generated zilch in terms of commentary here. It’s… okay. Something about his voice has changed in his later years. On the 90s/00s albums his voice was so beautifully smooth. Something about his tone is just slightly grating now, especially when he goes for higher notes.
