Tray brings up a good point in the comment thread for the article: "While Wayne can say he’s in the building like the audience (bad example, but he did much worse even in his prime) and it’s okay because it’s just a part of his train of thought, not this pseudo-aha moment." I think that's dead-on. Drake's slower, one-note flow (which I like, just SWITCH IT UP ALREADY DAMNIT, who are you, Guru?) and his propensity to be like OH SHIT I JUST DROPPED A BOMB! after he makes a joke is what irks me.

rennavate, Wednesday, 7 April 2010 22:42 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah tray is right, but also you could take the embarrasing with the bad not just because it was his train of thought, but because that train of thought (on something like DD3 or lil weezyana) often resutled in an embarrasment of riches -- drake's rap has nothing like that

goon with the wind (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 7 April 2010 22:46 (fourteen years ago) link

Yes, definitely, which is the case with other rappers too. Jay'll drop a whack line on the Blueprint ("I bounce back like round ball") and then hit you with four or five dope lines after that.

rennavate, Wednesday, 7 April 2010 22:47 (fourteen years ago) link

lolz aside, this devin album is predictably fucking awesome

forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 7 April 2010 22:48 (fourteen years ago) link

yup, and for someone who purports to be such a meticulous writer, drake really should be eliminate those not-very-good "glue" lines so to speak

album titles very much in character

also wfb is in general much more fun to listen to than drake. i'd much rather listen to a garbage-ass weezy verse than a garbage-ass drake verse.

bad goon pliesing (The Reverend), Thursday, 8 April 2010 00:41 (fourteen years ago) link

don't get me wrong, I've kinda come around on Trey Songz, but Devin's take on R&B feels so much more real to me.

forksclovetofu, Thursday, 8 April 2010 01:02 (fourteen years ago) link

what's the comparison?

goon with the wind (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 8 April 2010 01:02 (fourteen years ago) link

contrast, say Trey's 'Can't Help But Wait' with Devin's 'It's On You'.

forksclovetofu, Thursday, 8 April 2010 01:05 (fourteen years ago) link

well, if you insist

goon with the wind (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 8 April 2010 01:06 (fourteen years ago) link

I do.

forksclovetofu, Thursday, 8 April 2010 01:14 (fourteen years ago) link

Drake being better at R&B than rap is a good knock to use against him but tbh I don't see his brilliance even in that dept., there were like 50 hits last year that were better R&B songs than "Best I Ever Had," and his Songz mimicry as a singer is as transparent and distracting as his Wayne mimicry as a rapper.

my heart will goon (some dude), Thursday, 8 April 2010 01:33 (fourteen years ago) link

although i will say i haven't heard his song w/ the-dream yet -- i remember when it first leaked it was like a demo or uncomplete and i hate these 'new music cartel' type fucks yoinking unfinished songs out of studio hard drives on principle but lemme know if the actual song is out now

my heart will goon (some dude), Thursday, 8 April 2010 01:36 (fourteen years ago) link

I'm not hearing the Trey Songs mimicry... never have. Am I missing something?

rennavate, Thursday, 8 April 2010 01:56 (fourteen years ago) link

well songz is one of the first artists drake ever collaborated with, way back in like... 07 or something. whenever drake had that failed single. so it makes sense that drake would mimic him a bit. like, "best i ever had" could easily be a trey song(z) with barely any altering.

goon with the wind (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 8 April 2010 02:03 (fourteen years ago) link

why are you talking about Drake and Trey Songz in the rolling Stupid Fruity...oh wait, right

Yeah, I remember that song. I just never saw the similarities vocally, and I think Drake writes much better (and memorable) melodies.

rennavate, Thursday, 8 April 2010 05:06 (fourteen years ago) link

if you don't hear it then i don't know what to tell you dude

my heart will goon (some dude), Thursday, 8 April 2010 05:18 (fourteen years ago) link

i still have a hard time believing Trey didn't pop in the booth for the "and i say the same thing every single time" part

my heart will goon (some dude), Thursday, 8 April 2010 05:19 (fourteen years ago) link

Fair play. To be honest, I probably have heard way less Songz er songs than you guys have... I really only know his big singles.

rennavate, Thursday, 8 April 2010 05:26 (fourteen years ago) link

well i mean, you might also think he's an original and interesting rapper if you'd never listened to much wayne or kanye

is it out already? i've heard absolutely nothing about it since it was announced they were doing it.

he might have even have gone in. (a hoy hoy), Friday, 9 April 2010 22:25 (fourteen years ago) link

so i'm having fun listening to wu massacre. annoying lack of ghostface, who seems to have just grudgingly dropped of a leftover solo track and a few verses, but the production is nice enough, decidedly upbeat throughout. the rza produced track is the most blatanly dilla-aping beat he's ever made (and is very good), and the rest is good but i suppose too familiar to really excite.

the rza track is v good. i did not expect this. my other favorite track is the one at the end w/ the weird flanged-out electronic beat

no drops on my version, just an interlude where matthew africa mentions them. never had a problem w those interludes at all, didn't really understand those who did

am0n corner (J0rdan S.), Monday, 12 April 2010 01:09 (fourteen years ago) link

it's really all abt flowing over block beataz production & introducing touches of melody with all these guys tho, isn't that fair to say? only like ST 2 lettaz can really spit and een then only lately

tbrrprint (2) HD (zvookster), Monday, 12 April 2010 01:11 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah i pretty much only truly fuck w/ hunstville stuff prod by block beataz -- the songs on the d*plo mixtape are prob still the best stuff that has come out of there -- the bama stuff benefits from being guided by where the production takes them, also generally from lots of diff ppl rapping -- starshipz & rocketz is a totally dope album tho cuz it hits the right mood & does it in a sonically interesting fashion

g-side can write some real good pop stuff tho -- "my aura" esp, "rubber bandz" too & some other stuff
