z-ro's singing voice is great

that pitchfork article was good, as was yr drake article j0rdan
i agree with whoever was saying rap blogs are awful: with a few exceptions its just people reposting youtubes with little to no commentary is this really any different to other genres of music though? i don't read indie blogs but aren't they just reposting the new song by this new kewl band etc
i find out abt new rap from here and other message boards and occasionally irl friends. here is good: ppl are usually enthusiastic abt the music and not moaning abt the state of rap and calling each other fags etc.
i guess sometimes i get useful rap info from twitter but more often than not i have to unfollow rappers after they retweet every single person that says they like their new track
i'd actually really love to see a 'rap pitchfork' that pulled together a load of writers (if they can put aside their twitter beefs of course) with album reviews + longer pieces exploring regional scenes and stuff - there is really a place for something like this imo.

i think it was jesse serwer who pointed out for me that that was def a reprisal for drake's sacrilegious appropriation of the SUC June 27th freestyle session.

those breihan tweets were embarrassing - c'mon dude we all crave attention but it's just nagl to let it show so blatantly - but i find it hard to believe that noz's much-vaunted "conversation" on "blogs" is all that much better - i'll cop to only reading two or three rap blogs but honestly who needs to dive into a world of grumpyheads nitpicking at each other over and over again zzz.

dunno about you guys but even besides the 'back to life' ref that 'shutterbug' says to me big boi's been listening to some blaqkout - whole thing seems so much quik-er than any organized noize that i can recall, give or take the signature organ. still dope tho!

also, i think @noz's responses to breihan were totally batshit. he's like "BLOGGERS ARE DOING YOUR FOOTWORK, BITER" as if there's no benefit in delivering that info in a cohesive narrative to an average pitchfork reader. Like noz expects some Local Natives fan to be combing the datpiff comments section and subscribing to 20 blogs instead of reading one article.
― swag surfer blood (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 7 April 2010 14:11 (fourteen years ago) link
"the information is out there" /= "the information is in a digestible and interesting form for someone who's not immersed in it"
― swag surfer blood (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 7 April 2010 14:12 (fourteen years ago) link
yeah i mean...noz wrote a pretty good 'the decade in mixtapes' thing for NPR a few months ago and a lot of it would be no fuckin' duh to the average rap fan but clearly he understands the value of writing for your outlet and documenting larger narratives with summaries and overviews
― eenie meenie miney mo hater (some dude), Wednesday, 7 April 2010 14:14 (fourteen years ago) link
plus he was just going on and on the other day about how nobody writes at length about rap on blogs anymore and stuff like twitter don't serve well as long term documentation

if only youtubes came with liner notes or if only hus was as titillating a rapper as BoB he would garner 10283829 blog posts when his prod. credits are emailed

bookmarks are annoying to have at the top of the screen though. i really wish keith or whoever would just code that thing where it loads 100 messages from the last read post and then has "click for next page" afterwards
― a midsummer night's cream (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 7 April 2010 21:39 (fourteen years ago) link
you click bookmark on the last post, and then when the thread gets updated, a link appears at the top of the window
http://i43.tinypic.com/1xx9no.png
when you click it, it brings you back to the post you bookmarked and you see subsequent posts and so on -- you never miss anything or have to load massive threads

plies who was brought up to hate white people. he uses cracka in EVERY song. cracka is the white guy's version of nigg** but some how he's racist to every white man out there. SORRY WHITE PLIES FANS. HE WON'T CHANGE. OH BLACK FANS DON'T GET COCKY RACSIM IS NOT FUNNY

― goon with the wind (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 7 April 2010 21:46 (fourteen years ago) link
yeah, that's really, really confusing -- can't imagine it would be too hard to fix it
― ksh, Wednesday, 7 April 2010 21:53 (fourteen years ago) link
well, not that confusing -- just annoying
"Shutterbug" is great, and good job by Scott Storch on that beat. But is it REALLY that different in style from the Organized Noise stuff? I don't really hear it being this giant leap, it sounds like it's right in line with the music OutKast has been making this last decade. Also, feels a little TOO techno for any Quik nods.
― rennavate, Wednesday, 7 April 2010 22:37 (fourteen years ago) link
Just read your article on Drake, Jord. Great shit, and I agree... I like Drake most as an R&B artist. He writes great melodies and is much more convincing that way. I feel that Thank Me Later is going to be this thing where we're going to have to wade through the rap songs to get to the R&B.
I don't think he's a bad rapper, and I actually like him as a rapper, but this punchline business he fails at.
― rennavate, Wednesday, 7 April 2010 22:40 (fourteen years ago) link
Tray brings up a good point in the comment thread for the article: "While Wayne can say he’s in the building like the audience (bad example, but he did much worse even in his prime) and it’s okay because it’s just a part of his train of thought, not this pseudo-aha moment." I think that's dead-on. Drake's slower, one-note flow (which I like, just SWITCH IT UP ALREADY DAMNIT, who are you, Guru?) and his propensity to be like OH SHIT I JUST DROPPED A BOMB! after he makes a joke is what irks me.
― rennavate, Wednesday, 7 April 2010 22:42 (fourteen years ago) link
yeah tray is right, but also you could take the embarrasing with the bad not just because it was his train of thought, but because that train of thought (on something like DD3 or lil weezyana) often resutled in an embarrasment of riches -- drake's rap has nothing like that
