tom b.'s "state of the rap game" feature today is v good http://pitchfork.com/features/articles/7774-grind-to-get-it/1/

amongst those quoted: freeway, simon reynolds, david drake

jihad mane (J0rdan S.), Monday, 5 April 2010 19:09 (fourteen years ago) link

Ha, just came to mention that.

Makes me think- are XXL/(Are the Source still going?) really covering regional rap? I'd love to see a regular column written by dudes in the know about various scenes and what is big in [this or that place] while I hate reading blog shit as I cannot tell the difference between them, bar the very cream of the crop (cocaine blunts then...). Are there any trust worthy writers who are easy to follow talking about just [this or that place]? Everything is kinda a blur right now.

he might have even have gone in. (a hoy hoy), Monday, 5 April 2010 19:35 (fourteen years ago) link

i wouldn't read anything in xxl -- it's completely geared towards staying afloat and thus follows trends/movements & their popularity instead of tracing them out on a musical level while they are on the cusp of happening

jihad mane (J0rdan S.), Monday, 5 April 2010 19:37 (fourteen years ago) link

fair enough, i haven't picked up a copy of either in... about 3 or 4 years now? I think the last copy I bought was the lol kingdom come jay-z comeback issue.

i pretty much rely on this thread -- don't read any blogs besides noz's tumblr (aside from shit like digital dripped or traps n trunks that just post music)

jihad mane (J0rdan S.), Monday, 5 April 2010 19:41 (fourteen years ago) link

ya rap blogs have the lowest word-counts per post of, like, any other music blogs on the internet. i doubt dudes at dgb or trapsntrunks even listen to all the music they dump on their sites.

samosa gibreel, Monday, 5 April 2010 21:05 (fourteen years ago) link

i miss having a sub to ozone... are they still worth picking up?

forksclovetofu, Monday, 5 April 2010 22:35 (fourteen years ago) link

i'm okay with big boi's album being the '10 version of only built 4 pazz & jop ballots

jihad mane (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 6 April 2010 02:48 (fourteen years ago) link

word is that this is a storch production, which, wow -- big boi also drops the only funny shit/piss rap line in like two years

jihad mane (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 6 April 2010 05:01 (fourteen years ago) link

oh damn that's nice

The Reverend, Tuesday, 6 April 2010 05:29 (fourteen years ago) link

vans = black mags = cricketz??

armando white (dyao), Tuesday, 6 April 2010 13:29 (fourteen years ago) link

lmao @ cricketz killing on singles jukebox. the best rap song of the year has tyga on it!

fuckshitpop (some dude), Tuesday, 6 April 2010 16:08 (fourteen years ago) link

loved that track at first but it's fast wearing its welcome thin.
new boyz are such shitty shitty rappers.

forksclovetofu, Tuesday, 6 April 2010 16:39 (fourteen years ago) link

cricketz is good, doesn't really surprise me that it did well on jukebox considering the scores that other jerk stuff has gotten

jihad mane (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 6 April 2010 20:00 (fourteen years ago) link

it's cool that they were able to make 2 gimmick tracks -- the use of crickets as the hook of the hook is pretty dope, as is just going "yadada new boys/ yadada skinny jeans" -- they're like dj unk but better (and of course that's a compliment)

jihad mane (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 6 April 2010 20:27 (fourteen years ago) link

I need some bangers for my summer mix. Last year rap was sorely underrepresented. Any suggestions?

rennavate, Tuesday, 6 April 2010 23:58 (fourteen years ago) link

i'm not gonna post all the youtubes but

dj quik ft suga free - nobody (summer jam of all summer jams)
rick ross - mafia music 2
gucci mane - dear diary
jay electronica - exhibit c
young jeezy ft plies - lose my mind
lil b - insane
the jacka - funk

lol @ breihan-noz twitter beef

handle your b I (The Reverend), Wednesday, 7 April 2010 03:20 (fourteen years ago) link

having read his piece and thought there were surprisingly few howlers in it, his twitter has made him annoying again

http://twitter.com/tombreihan/status/11653789200

dude, it was basically a summary of mundanities for outsiders, don't expect the world to stop.

zvookster, Wednesday, 7 April 2010 03:51 (fourteen years ago) link

think rennavate could also rock Alley Boy & Young Dro "Tall" that track is biiiiiig

zvookster, Wednesday, 7 April 2010 03:53 (fourteen years ago) link

noz was being an assface on twitter tho

xxxp

ya he is but he's also otm when he says "that article just repackaged a lot of ideas that have been bouncing around the blog circle for the past year or so" and that the article doesnt really engage with that blog circle. breihan's article was good and i agree with most of what he says but it was pretty underwhelming in how little new thought/opinions/whatever it had

killah priest, Wednesday, 7 April 2010 04:34 (fourteen years ago) link

well yes, but he's also writing for pitchforkmedia.com, not people who know who MAYNHOLUP is

new goon (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 7 April 2010 04:34 (fourteen years ago) link

meaning that what noz is saying is self-evident in the content of the article and the place where it was published

new goon (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 7 April 2010 04:36 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah, you have to understand that the article isn't for us. It's for guys who wouldn't know this shit already, like a lot of P4k's crowd.

Thanks for the suggestions so far.

rennavate, Wednesday, 7 April 2010 04:36 (fourteen years ago) link

ya ya im just saying noz isnt totally offbase.. i think its less the pitchfork audience--like tom e writes interesting things about pop to an audience that is similarly put off it--than how limiting this obligatory 'state of hip hop' type piece is to content unless youre gonna go challopsing

killah priest, Wednesday, 7 April 2010 04:41 (fourteen years ago) link

― rennavate, Tuesday, April 6, 2010 11:36 PM

OTM. as someone who likes rap but listens to mostly indie/metal, i thought Tom's article was solid

ksh, Wednesday, 7 April 2010 04:42 (fourteen years ago) link

It would be nice is P4k got deej or someone to keep a closer eye on hip-hop, or specific regional scenes, but what can you do.

I've been trying to get on with them for like two years now with no luck.

rennavate, Wednesday, 7 April 2010 04:44 (fourteen years ago) link

I was pretty happy when I got to the bottom of that article but then I realized there were 2 more pages to go

armando white (dyao), Wednesday, 7 April 2010 04:58 (fourteen years ago) link

tbf though it did seem like noz was beefin for the sake of beefin

Let's be honest: What's new?

rennavate, Wednesday, 7 April 2010 04:59 (fourteen years ago) link

no, the article was solid, a good summary for those not following the convo, and i don't think a p4k writer needs ethically to be part of that convo in order to summarize it for his readers, but noz is justified in his crackaz is biters steez nonetheless, esp. if t.b. is fishing around for attention on the strength of it.

zvookster, Wednesday, 7 April 2010 05:07 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah, tom's original tweet was kind of desperate, but i know the feeling

new goon (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 7 April 2010 05:08 (fourteen years ago) link

like, when i spent 4+ hours writing a blog post about drake that was informed by months of internal thought, i was kind of disappointed when it only got 6 comments

but then again i didn't end up posting on twitter fishing for comments

new goon (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 7 April 2010 05:09 (fourteen years ago) link

btw excellent drake piece j0rdan :D

zvookster, Wednesday, 7 April 2010 05:10 (fourteen years ago) link

looool xpost honestly

armando white (dyao), Wednesday, 7 April 2010 05:12 (fourteen years ago) link

non-trolling comment coming from someone w/ almost no knowledge of any of this: where is this "convo" taking place?

ksh, Wednesday, 7 April 2010 05:12 (fourteen years ago) link

the whole "convo" that informed Tom's piece? apologies for being unclear--i wasn't referring to the convo following from his piece

ksh, Wednesday, 7 April 2010 05:15 (fourteen years ago) link

just the general rap discourse ksh

zvookster, Wednesday, 7 April 2010 05:17 (fourteen years ago) link

you need to get on bloglines right quick

armando white (dyao), Wednesday, 7 April 2010 05:19 (fourteen years ago) link

good piece j.s. but I hadn't realized people actually considered drake to be a rapper until now
