08 Wake Up Call [ft. David Banner] (David Banner Remix)

this is one instance where I actually hope all Banner does is throw a "Rubber Band Man"-knockoff beat on there.

some dude, Friday, 31 October 2008 19:31 (fifteen years ago) link

i kind of hope all the people on this tracklist that are mainly producers just throw their normal stuff under these songs

im going to even pretend like pharrell's rmx of "she will be loved" is gonna end up like "frontin" and not "number ones" (is that what that song is called?) or something

jordan s (J0rdan S.), Friday, 31 October 2008 19:36 (fifteen years ago) link

would download

Jordan, Friday, 31 October 2008 19:36 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah, like "Little Of Your Time" with a "Toxic" backing would be just fine with me, no need to get creative. (xpost)

new album has a distressing number of industry hands as co-writers

not that i was expecting anything from it... they haven't had a great single in years, but just kinda depressing to look at

lamborghini persie (J0rdan S.), Monday, 18 June 2012 03:17 (eleven years ago) link

i liked that one single from their last album that didn't go anywhere

if you can spend months with mutt lange recording in europe and get zero big hits from it, you may require life support

da croupier, Monday, 18 June 2012 13:45 (eleven years ago) link

industry hands all over the new album seemed like an inevitability after the steep diminishing returns of what-they-usually-do on the 3rd album and the face-saving success of a Benny Blanco/Shellback production

bronytheus (some dude), Monday, 18 June 2012 13:52 (eleven years ago) link

based on writing credits one of the bonus tracks on this album appears to be a J.R. Rotem production that samples Amadou & Mariam's joint with Damon Albarn

On March 8, 2012, it was announced that Jesse Carmichael would take a break from the band for an undetermined amount of time to focus more on his studies of music and "spiritual healing".

i bet the non-Levine members of the band did less on this album than the non-Stefani members of No Doubt did on Rock Steady

Where'd you get your material, I mean the sound bytes and musical clippets and all, you've been so forthcoming about it! With people who offer you their e-mail address, no less.

I mean, since you're such an avid music enthusiast and all.

wrong thread?

three months pass...

uhhh so the newest (awful) single is apparently #1 on the hot 100 now. when i first heard it i actually thought it would be squarely rejected by the public because it sounded so bad to me but APPARENTLY i was wrong. i should have known better considering that the gym class heroes/adam levine single was such a big hit earlier this year or last year or whenever that was.

teledyldonix, Thursday, 20 September 2012 08:22 (eleven years ago) link

Ehh, it's fine. After the double whammy of "Moves Like Jagger" and "Payphone" it seems pretty innocuous and hard to get mad at, kind of minor though, all the same. Kind of funny tho to go "oh of course it's a hit" cause of that Gym Class Heroes joint that everybody's already forgotten, instead of, you know, the two huge hits that immediately preceded this one.

tuomas without a nose ring (The Reverend), Thursday, 20 September 2012 09:23 (eleven years ago) link

haven't heard it in a while but "payphone" is dope iirc?

flopson, Thursday, 20 September 2012 16:02 (eleven years ago) link

Maroon 5 have entered the 10,000 Maniacs phase of their career in which the lead singer humors a band that barely sounds like it's playing on their own record.

a regina spektor is haunting europe (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 20 September 2012 16:04 (eleven years ago) link

did they ever not sound like that, though?

da croupier, Thursday, 20 September 2012 16:15 (eleven years ago) link

If you ever want to be bored, listen to the "commentary track" version of this album on Spotify, as members of the band (or possibly Levine, with voice-shifting technology) riff without intensity about the songwriting process.

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 20 September 2012 16:17 (eleven years ago) link

I own the second one and they still sound like a band playing distinct parts; they hadn't yet been Pro Tooled to sound like the aural equivalent of one of Levine's tats.

a regina spektor is haunting europe (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 20 September 2012 16:17 (eleven years ago) link

ha – "riff without intensity" is what these guys once did

a regina spektor is haunting europe (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 20 September 2012 16:18 (eleven years ago) link

it's definitely gotten more extreme, i'll admit

songwriting credits on the new album suggest an album frontloaded with songs levine did with pros, with two other members allowed to fill in the second half.

da croupier, Thursday, 20 September 2012 16:21 (eleven years ago) link

you guys ever heard kara's flowers? when levine and co were going for that fountains of wayne/possum dixon vibe

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Trkt9w_94To

da croupier, Thursday, 20 September 2012 16:22 (eleven years ago) link

huh, wow. No, never heard, it's almost worth pulling up on Spotify for less washed-out sound. Utterly generic in that "I think I've heard this hook before somewhere" way and not exactly punching its way out of the speaker but not the worst generic 90s-style power-pop you'll ever hear.

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 20 September 2012 16:28 (eleven years ago) link

they played state college while promoting that album and bonded with some of the local music dudes, who then spent the latter half of the '00s going "wtf" at maroon 5's success. I love that maroon 5's narrative - failed late '90s alt-rock band breaks up after brief painful major label experience, singer gets more into classic rock/r&b and brings back the posse, sign to big indie and PROFIT - is the same as Spoon's. Only Britt kept the old name.

i still find their turn into an adam levine sell out machine to be generally regrettable but red pill blues was half-written by john ryan and so i kinda fuck with it
