2) Basically, rockism is the basis of how music evolved to what it is today. It started out with people doing it for the fun of it. This was the case for a while, until big bands became 'big bands.' This created a new kind of music with new flow. Everyone is now trying to "get big" with music, when they need to look back to the roots. Yes, this has created new great music. For the most part, people need to 'feel' their music more than want money for it. It's nice to make money from doing something you love, but the money starts to take over. Now, people will always get money and prize for their music, but we still have to remember the one's that don't.

4) Sufjan is soo legit. One of my favorite songs of all time is Chicago. He just recently came out with a new Christmas album, and it's pretty good. He is known for his lyrically focused and instrumentally rich songs that often relate to faith and family. Stevens has enjoyed wide critical success in the United States. His music is different then most stuff coming out mainstream right now, and I like that a lot. I've been listening to him since he first started back in 99, and I still do.

i used to not understand rockism. thanks to this post, i finally figured it out:

What is rockism? Rockism is the idea of using synths in pro tools. This idea is all about the composer or producer of the album. They use this technique in pop music alot, and its also a way that people can express them selves. This rockism is a great help to crappy bands to make there sucky music sound better. Anyway basically this idea improves the cd by adding fake sounds, which makes the music more rockin'. Whenever I record music in my studio, i have to confess that I too use this technique or method, but its the future people!

Rockism is an ideology of popular music criticism, originating in the British music press in the late 1970s or early 1980s.[citation needed] The fundamental tenet of rockism is that some forms of popular music, and some musical artists, are more authentic than others. More specifically, authentic popular music fits the rock and roll paradigm; it is made using the basic rock instrumentation of guitars, bass guitars and drums, and fits the structures of a rock and roll song.
Rockism is suspicious of the use of technology, from synthesizers to Pro Tools-style computer-based production systems. Rockism places value on the idea of the composer and performer as auteur; authentic music is composed as a sincere form of self-expression, and usually performed by those who composed it.

4)sufjan stevens is AMAZING! he plays something like twenty-six instruments. writes intelligent lyrics. and has a beautiful passionate somewhat bitter-sweet voice. sufjan stevens is the sort of musician you have to admit is good even if you don't like his music. I like his music immensely. his music is for when you have time to sit and listen i mean really sit there listen deeply. its very musically complex and i think thats one of the things i like so much about it. i always notice something extra each time i listen to one of his songs that i didnt notice before.

2)Rockism is a blood-covered prom-date with fire in its heart. Rockism won't quit until it has vacuumed and sponged every ounce of raw, unadulterated talent left in the world and pissed it back out as mindless, shrink-wrapped tripe. Rockism answers to no one and makes no apologies. Take Rockism out for a nice chicken dinner, tell Rockism that it looks great in those pleather chaps, write Rockism a poem, Rockism will never call you back. Rockism will never let you win at your favorite boardgame. Make no mistake about it, Rockism is a formidable opponent. Find the chink in Rockism's armor. Flip Rockism over to expose Rockism's soft underbelly. Rockism-this is gonna hurt you more than it's gonna hurt me.

2) For various people, it's a term of praise for avoiding artifice or a description of unadventurous musical tastes or a word for just liking rock a whole lot. But it's also a potentially useful concept for thinking about the way people write about popular music, and the way people experience it. The trick is to figure out exactly what it means.Robert Christgau wrote in 1990 about "the 'rockism' debate that raged through the U.K. music press in the early '80s": Rockism, at that point, meant putting stock in rock's "capacity to change lives or express truth"—as opposed to the kinds of pop that (a rockist would say) have more of a capacity to express pretty lies. Most of all, rockism is programmed into the way people write about music. [seattleweekly]

4) I prefer Sufjan to Deerhoof for personal reasons; the majority of Sufjan's songs are more accessible than Deerhoof's, while Deerhoof's music focuses unconventional structures, rhythms, and lyrics. Sufjan was great live at the Orpheum here in Boston, few musicians sound better live than they do on recordings.

According to wiki, The main element of rockism is that some forms of popular music, and some musical artists, are more authentic than others. Authentic popular music fits the rock and roll paradigm, so basic rock instrumentation of guitars, bass guitars and drums, fits the structures of a rock and roll song. it seems that it is fairly strict in it's beleif as it appears to shy from technology)

I only heard him recently, but am waiting till i'm next paid to purchase the album, i think. it's kind of electronic but folky and he's fresh as the fairy floss at an easter fair, such as year of the dog reminds me a bit of air, but slightly more insular. hearing sister Winter got me....

1) I'm amazed that people answer this one. I do not share copyrighted material online, your honour.

2) Not as lame a question as it may at first seem. The term's been around for decades, but a single meaning has only been settled upon the past few years. Broadly speaking, it's used (often derisively these days) to denote an attitude which views certain stylistic conventions of rock (live percussion, electric guitars, performing original material) as the norm in popular music. Introduction of outside, particularly opposing, elements is seen as a deviation from a more authentic and often correct form of music.

What I find interesting about this is that the word had a number of largely unrelated meanings for years before. The one I used it as referred not to a critical attitude but rather an artistic one. To wit: rockism as an awareness on the part of the performer of aspects of rock music usually only examined by critics. In other words, an understanding of the subtextual meanings, inherited signs and other cultural studies-type baggage that invariably accompanies popular art, as well as its inherent contradictions and (let's face it; they sure do) absurdities. This manifested itself most explicitly in English post-punk bands of the late 70s/early 80s (q.v. Simon Reynolds' terrific book on the era), e.g., Wire, PiL, Gang of Four, who began moving in the direction of a sort of meta-rock in which their music functioned as its own subject. Of course, this awareness didn't suddenly appear after a Sex Pistols gig; one can trace it all the way back to Zappa and beyond.

3) http://www.richardavedon.com/editorial2004/newyorker/catpower.php

I can't believe no one else posted this one (or maybe someone did and I just didn't see it). For Pete's sake, people, you can see her bush. All sniveling little indie boys wanna bang Chan Marshall. Most of the girls too.

4) I don't particularly care for either to be honest, but if forced to choose I'll go with Deerhoof. While I find their short attention span-derived quirkiness somewhat annoying, I can at least appreciate the omnivorousness of their vision from a safe distance. Sufjan, on the other hand, sounds to me like a bunch of wussy librarian-rock twaddle. At least Brian Wilson did a lot of drugs.

Sentence five. Sentence six. Sentence seven. Sentence eight.

5) I require none; I request one.

Well I would go for Deerhoof and not Sufjan stevens. Mainly it’s because I really like Deerhoof’s music more, why? Well their experimental ways of making music has inspired myself I my on so called music career. Their somewhat chaotic way of making music is very experimental and interesting. And the fact that they have no formal musical training makes them even better, and you that all that they are doing is coming from within and not doing because some producers or managers tell them to. I find a lot of people think their music is too hard to listen to but that’s exactly what I like with them, weird rhythms and rimes, having to go so deep into their music to get it is like meditation for me.

5. Well one single invite would be just perfect.

The term was first used by the British music press in the late 70s or early 80s. Rockism is basically an opinionated position towards any form of music that doesn’t obey the rules and values of rock music. Many fans of classic rock music have the tendency to view music that is created by extensive use of technology (e.g., synthesizers and computers) of lower value. According to the followers of rockism, music should be made in a way that puts the artist and his creativity as the number one priority. However, there are those who criticize rockism by implying that rockism was never truly free from commercialism themselves. An example of a typical genre of music that does not fill these requirements by any standards is today’s manufactured “pop” music (whose sole purpose is to generate money). So in a way we can see that the rockism debate was a result of overproduction in the music industry (and the industrialization of it). “Some artists are more 'real' than others.” is one typical statement for a “rockist” [1].

4) To be honest I must say that I’m not familiar with these two artists. However, doing a bit of searching and checking the artists out on last.fm, I find that they both have interesting sounds. And after a few songs have found my favorite; Deerhoof! It might be because I have a small preference towards the experimental spirit and female vocalists. Nevertheless, I can see myself listening to Sufjan Stevens too; however, today is not one of those days. To me Deerhoof appeals by creating an interesting, unique mix of music. I love music that is experimental and tries new things. So the bottom line is, I must remember to take a closer look at this band later on.

5)
Ett, tack.

Forget it. There are posts in this very thread alluding to the visibility of IP addresses of posters for those tech-savvy enough to find them. I'll be vague and say that I have more live recordings than studio albums in my collection, so if that's not really what's in demand on Oink, fine. If you want artist names, it's gotta be on a secure server.

By the way, by "live recordings" I do not mean "Dead shows". Or phuckin' Fish.

2) Rockism is the idea of popular music criticism. It is based on the idea that, at one time, music was perfect. I believe this time to be in the late 60s to late 70s. Today's music is mostly compromised by a blend of producers, writers, composers, etc. Some say the most important instrument in music today is the computer (synthesized music). I believe mostly in Rockism, as I do believe a true musician is on that can express their feelings and emotions into a symphony. The epitome of a golden age band (in my opinion) would be the Beatles, as their lyrics were as amazing as their instrumentals. I do know many talented "musicians" that do not play an instrument at all, but rather string out a series of beats onto a computer screen, and this goes against the idea of Rockism. Rockism is the prime example of how music should be.
