I think everybody secretly loves BARRY WHITE ok ok at least the song that was on Ally McBeal when she dances about in those WHACKY unisex bogz0r.

I wd like to think everyone likes KATE BUSH but when faced with some of the Lionheart/Hounds of Luv (hammer)HORRORS I cd see why they do not.

Sarah (starry), Friday, 20 September 2002 13:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

Well no one's bothered to tell me about them.

Oh hang on, Barry White wins. End of thread.

Graham (graham), Friday, 20 September 2002 13:15 (twenty-one years ago) link

Barry [ ] is substantially challenged

george gosset (gegoss), Friday, 20 September 2002 13:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

I love the way you only italicised those 1st 2 syllables.

"how can you possibly nominate the Stones with their 25+ year track record of complete and utter shit
but this "they recorded some crap stuff therefore they are DISQUALIFIED" thing is ridiculous. I defy anyone to name me a musician who didn't disgrace themselves on record at least once.

Contradiction, Shaky Mo? ;-) "

Sorry Ned, but my Rolling Stones comment was directed at AlexinNYC, who developed the "recording of crap=disqualified" rubrick. His nomination of the Rolling Stones is *his* contradiction (since he doesn't deny they've put out tons of embarassing shit). I wouldn't disqualify the Stones on those grounds, but Alex should have. I disqualify the Stones on the grounds that they really just aren't that fantastic, even at their peak. I don't love them. I'm sure there's plenty of people here who hate them.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 20 September 2002 15:27 (twenty-one years ago) link

Does anyone hate the Undertones, Chuck Berry, or New Order?

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Friday, 20 September 2002 18:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think James Brown, despite Graham, is as clear a victor as we can have, which as I'm sure you can all guess is a-ok by me.

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 20 September 2002 18:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

I don't think Kool and the Gang has been fully shot down.

What about Fela? Afrika Bambaataa? Portishead? Massive Attack?

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Friday, 20 September 2002 18:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

If we are looking for something everyone likes, we have to accept blanket dismissals like Graham's, and we are almost certainly doomed. If we are looking for something no one dislikes, we don't, since we have no evidence that Graham (not wanting to pick on you, Graham, but yours is the clearest and hugest blanket!) is familiar with, say, Louis Prima.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 20 September 2002 18:59 (twenty-one years ago) link

i'll say prince sign o the times era.
at least i'd like 2 see some one believably say say
they didn't like the *song* 'sign o the times'.
other than that chic are still a go-er,
and i'd say love unlimited too. come on who
could hate them ?

did anyone say phil spector last time ?

piscesboy, Friday, 20 September 2002 19:13 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think we'll have to wait for Graham to say he specifically dislikes James Brown before the final vote.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Friday, 20 September 2002 19:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

He's bound to love some 1990's record that samples "Funky Drummer", anyway...I say we elect James Brown our brand new funky president!

Daniel_Rf, Friday, 20 September 2002 21:36 (twenty-one years ago) link

Josh (Josh), Friday, 20 September 2002 23:13 (twenty-one years ago) link

Mr. David Robert Jones is still in the running

brg30 (brg30), Saturday, 21 September 2002 19:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

"I really do only like about three records made before 1990, is this so hard to understand?"

It is hard to understand, actually. Is it because it's "before your era" or something? Might it be that you simply haven't heard *ENOUGH* music that was recorded prior to 1990? Also, it's not like 1990 was some crucial watermark year like 1969 or 1977 (or ever 1994). Why 1990?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 21 September 2002 19:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm officially shooting down Kool & the Gang. Apart from "Jungle Boogie," they have precious little in their catalogue worth salvaging (especially nonsense like "She's Fresh").

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 21 September 2002 19:52 (twenty-one years ago) link

Maybe we should re-jigger this to say SPECIFIC ALBUMS that everone loves....this would eschew the whole "yeah, well their later work was crap" argument (an argument I used, incidentally).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 21 September 2002 19:57 (twenty-one years ago) link

And I realised the other day I don't like T.Rex either.

Tom, you hurt me in my heart.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 21 September 2002 20:18 (twenty-one years ago) link

Allow me to officially remove David Robert from the running.

Burr, Sunday, 22 September 2002 16:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

Abba . Without any doubt

Panagiotis Pileidis, Sunday, 22 September 2002 22:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

By the way the one song that people I know from all walks of life absolutely LOVE, is "Ghostwriter" by RJD2

Trust peeps

Roxy Music

the pinefox, Thursday, 20 February 2003 14:16 (twenty-one years ago) link

three months pass...
Groove Armada are horrible

Mike Ouderkirk (Mike Ouderkirk), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 05:42 (twenty years ago) link

Wait, shit, I didn't realize I was bumping a four month old thread. I guess that was kinda pointless. Nevertheless, Groove Armada are shit.

Mike Ouderkirk (Mike Ouderkirk), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 05:43 (twenty years ago) link

Um, Bob Marley/the Wailers?

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 05:49 (twenty years ago) link

nope

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 05:51 (twenty years ago) link

he's the devil! get him!

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 06:01 (twenty years ago) link

Bob Marley elicits nothing but a yawn and a "next!" from this corner.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 06:41 (twenty years ago) link

I don't see anyone vetoing Al Green yet...nor do I see how anyone with an ounce of taste or sense or just plain human decency (not to mention genitalia) could do so. He is king.

(Anyone veto Marvin Gaye yet? Actually, I'm remembering--it seems someone did.)

Cheap Trick, though. It seems hard to imagine disliking those first three CT albums...and I think every band Barrus mentioned, besides the Minutemen, are pretty unimpeachable, but I know people who dislike em each and all...)

M Specktor (M Specktor), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 14:51 (twenty years ago) link

The Ramones

Chris Clark (Chris Clark), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 20:16 (twenty years ago) link

the answer to this question is Depeche Mode. Everybody likes Depeche Mode. That's a fuckin' fact.

Rog, Wednesday, 18 June 2003 20:27 (twenty years ago) link

Felcher (Felcher), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 20:40 (twenty years ago) link

I never liked Depeche Mode, personally. This is never going to succeed, you know.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 20:47 (twenty years ago) link

cosmic rough riders!

doom-e, Wednesday, 18 June 2003 20:49 (twenty years ago) link

Why not try and find a band that no one hates--you might not love it, but you can appreciate it.

cybele (cybele), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 20:51 (twenty years ago) link

I hate Depeche Mode.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 22:14 (twenty years ago) link

the Shangri-Las?

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 22:15 (twenty years ago) link

i hate depeche mode also

justyn might just be on to something there.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 19 June 2003 01:31 (twenty years ago) link

Soft Cell? I never found anyone who hated them.

phil jones (interstar), Thursday, 19 June 2003 01:35 (twenty years ago) link

No one's shot down Joy Division.

Or the Buzzcocks as far as I can tell.

What about the Ramones?

Simon H., Thursday, 19 June 2003 01:36 (twenty years ago) link

Jesus H. Penises people can we just say James Brown and call it a fucking day? What's the point of suggesting more new bands when we can't agree on the ones already suggested?

Millar (Millar), Thursday, 19 June 2003 01:43 (twenty years ago) link

I don't like James Brown. Sorry!

phil jones (interstar), Thursday, 19 June 2003 01:52 (twenty years ago) link

Haha I was going to POINT out that Geir wouldn't have agreed either.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 19 June 2003 01:57 (twenty years ago) link

phil jones and geir are bots

Millar (Millar), Thursday, 19 June 2003 02:31 (twenty years ago) link

I hereby shoot down Joy Division and the Buzzcocks

Dan I., Thursday, 19 June 2003 02:53 (twenty years ago) link

That leaves the Ramones? I'm for the Ramones then

Millar (Millar), Thursday, 19 June 2003 02:56 (twenty years ago) link
