years of trashing commercial rap & recording one of the worst commercially successful rap songs ever

The BoyBoy Big HOO$ (deej), Friday, 2 April 2010 00:11 (fourteen years ago) link

rip joell, i stanned 4 u

batlike darkwing cartoonduck (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 2 April 2010 00:17 (fourteen years ago) link

"successful"

k$h (The Reverend), Friday, 2 April 2010 00:33 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah, what?

2 guys 1 jag (J0rdan S.), Friday, 2 April 2010 00:34 (fourteen years ago) link

rappers who don't like commercial rap are always the worst at it tho. the contempt usually shows by way of halfassing.

k$h (The Reverend), Friday, 2 April 2010 00:35 (fourteen years ago) link

i stanned for joell too :(

i actually don't have time right now,

but i was kinda kicking around the idea of not listening to any new rap/hip-hop anymore.

young money represents a death of hip hop in a way i can't even really fully articulate, and though i do appreciate a lot of the dudes deej and others here have pointed out sometimes i feel like i'm just going through the motions of being a fan of current hip hop.

seeing lex and rtc talk about nicki minaj seriously on that thread -- and i totally understand that it's lex's job to like shit like that -- but god it's just...ugh.

da vinci seems alright.

but honesty am i the only one that feel like this year's goon thread feels like going through the motions?

can't think of anything (M@tt He1ges0n), Saturday, 3 April 2010 18:25 (fourteen years ago) link

Haha I'm a lot more excited about new rap right now than I have been in a few years. I'm finding a lot of new stuff to like.

The Reverend, Saturday, 3 April 2010 18:59 (fourteen years ago) link

that's good! what in particular?

cuz i dunno mostly it seems like j0rdan and deej telling each other the rappers they like don't have any "buzz"

kulinary gangsta (M@tt He1ges0n), Saturday, 3 April 2010 19:02 (fourteen years ago) link

i've been as unexcited about rap this year as i have been in memory

2 guys 1 jag (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 3 April 2010 19:06 (fourteen years ago) link

im extremely unexcited about this year's crop of 'buzzed' rappers, im mostly just enjoying the past three years of bay area raps from mob figaz & livewire crews. thats basically all im feeling right now -- then going back & listening to old shit i missed out on.

The BoyBoy Big HOO$ (deej), Saturday, 3 April 2010 22:06 (fourteen years ago) link

oj's xxl advert alone makes the year worth it iirc

Jon Caramanica is touting in the Sunday NY Times today JayAre's "1,2,3" (of California Swag District "Teach Me How to Dougie" fame). Eh, it's ok.

why did so many rap writers start covering kiddie novelty shit. i say this as a dude whose first tape was 'totally krossed out'

The BoyBoy Big HOO$ (deej), Sunday, 4 April 2010 17:24 (fourteen years ago) link

lol @ contristanning = not paying attention to blog hyped rappers

The BoyBoy Big HOO$ (deej), Sunday, 4 April 2010 17:29 (fourteen years ago) link

i just realized that the rapper JayAre that people are talking about these days isn't the shitty jazzy rap group JayARE that shot a video at the club in Atlanta that my friend works at that we were laughing at the other day:

jihad mane (J0rdan S.), Monday, 5 April 2010 19:09 (fourteen years ago) link

Ha, just came to mention that.

Makes me think- are XXL/(Are the Source still going?) really covering regional rap? I'd love to see a regular column written by dudes in the know about various scenes and what is big in [this or that place] while I hate reading blog shit as I cannot tell the difference between them, bar the very cream of the crop (cocaine blunts then...). Are there any trust worthy writers who are easy to follow talking about just [this or that place]? Everything is kinda a blur right now.

he might have even have gone in. (a hoy hoy), Monday, 5 April 2010 19:35 (fourteen years ago) link

i wouldn't read anything in xxl -- it's completely geared towards staying afloat and thus follows trends/movements & their popularity instead of tracing them out on a musical level while they are on the cusp of happening

jihad mane (J0rdan S.), Monday, 5 April 2010 19:37 (fourteen years ago) link

fair enough, i haven't picked up a copy of either in... about 3 or 4 years now? I think the last copy I bought was the lol kingdom come jay-z comeback issue.

he might have even have gone in. (a hoy hoy), Monday, 5 April 2010 19:39 (fourteen years ago) link

i pretty much rely on this thread -- don't read any blogs besides noz's tumblr (aside from shit like digital dripped or traps n trunks that just post music)

jihad mane (J0rdan S.), Monday, 5 April 2010 19:41 (fourteen years ago) link

ya rap blogs have the lowest word-counts per post of, like, any other music blogs on the internet. i doubt dudes at dgb or trapsntrunks even listen to all the music they dump on their sites.

samosa gibreel, Monday, 5 April 2010 21:05 (fourteen years ago) link

i miss having a sub to ozone... are they still worth picking up?

forksclovetofu, Monday, 5 April 2010 22:35 (fourteen years ago) link

i'm okay with big boi's album being the '10 version of only built 4 pazz & jop ballots

jihad mane (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 6 April 2010 02:48 (fourteen years ago) link

word is that this is a storch production, which, wow -- big boi also drops the only funny shit/piss rap line in like two years
