Sooner or later, Jesus snatches 'em all up.

This show is very good at the little things, warm humorous moments where the Gallagher family sits around the breakfast table and makes fun of each other. Where it falters is in its need to introduce at least one, often more than one, melodramatic plot twist into each episode. Seth is proving to be a much more charming leading man than the other kid -- I don't really see why they need the other kid at all. If this show was on the WB it might have the ooportunity to achieve greatness -- to develop slowly and find its stride. As it is, Fox network will likely suck every last blast of inspiration from it and it will be cancelled by next year. Also, it really simplifies things by having such a dimwitted female girl cast. The audience's sympathy cannot stray from Seth and the other boy.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 28 November 2003 00:23 (twenty years ago) link

is seth the guy with the black hair? the guy from gilmore girls?

amateur!st (amateurist), Friday, 28 November 2003 00:26 (twenty years ago) link

That's what I'm calling him anyway, though I could be wrong. And yes, farmboy has a disastrous hairstyle. Modern America really must decide what it to be done about male bangs.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 28 November 2003 00:28 (twenty years ago) link

seth is dreamy.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 28 November 2003 01:21 (twenty years ago) link

the parents rule

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 28 November 2003 01:54 (twenty years ago) link

drunk mom on the thanksgiving episode was awesome: "fresh margs!"

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 28 November 2003 01:58 (twenty years ago) link

I think peter gallagher has really hit his stride with this show

unfortunately I missed that thanksgiving episode! everyone told me it was awesome though

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 28 November 2003 02:00 (twenty years ago) link

awesomeness slightly detracted from due to seth's awful girlfriends, though. mary is right - get some new ladies in there!

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 28 November 2003 02:37 (twenty years ago) link

I have a theory that summer is what's-her-face from that '70s show's daughter

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 28 November 2003 02:56 (twenty years ago) link

I missed Drunk Mom -- though the ladeez at 'arobilates' coudn't stop talking about her. These particular parents really aren't so bad, as far as TV parents go, they may be the tops. I'll have to think about this some more. But Mom was looking a bit more haggard than usual, at first I thought it was just the hangover, but it seemed to last throughout the episode. Seth was such a cutie-pie on Gilmore Girls -- I just bet Lane will never get a boyfriend again. Also, he seemed to have his wrist/hand motions in check last episode.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 28 November 2003 03:45 (twenty years ago) link

Mary, why must you taunt me like this!

Carey (Carey), Friday, 28 November 2003 10:47 (twenty years ago) link

I know, it must super suck to be traveling throughout Europe and not have any access to the O.C. I hope you at least taped it?

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 30 November 2003 03:08 (twenty years ago) link

one month passes...
I think this show jumped the shark last night, and you know it pains me to even use that phrase. But really: two, *two* Members Only jackets, gratuitous irony, over use of already played out on the web "young women like the Golden Girls" meme from like four months ago, and generic cheese faux indie band featuring a Coppola as the main "event". Even Mr. Slopey-Haired Oliver seems flown in from a John Hughes film. The solution to this is more stories about the adults (and I am probably only saying this because I am OLD).

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Friday, 9 January 2004 00:16 (twenty years ago) link

I take it you're not a Roony fan then

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 9 January 2004 00:19 (twenty years ago) link

Who the fuck are Rooney? Is this an LA thing? AMG tells me they were formed last year and already have an album out on Geffen.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Friday, 9 January 2004 00:21 (twenty years ago) link

What is it you're all talking about again?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 9 January 2004 00:24 (twenty years ago) link

@d@m will never be a REAL Californian

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Friday, 9 January 2004 00:26 (twenty years ago) link

I feel that last night requires me to have an opinion on Rooney in order to be cool but I cannot quite gather up the willpower to care

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Friday, 9 January 2004 00:27 (twenty years ago) link

@d@m will never be a REAL Californian

He is probably fortunate in this regard.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 9 January 2004 00:46 (twenty years ago) link

Who's the dark-haired boy with the choked-off voice that makes me want to pull my brains out? I guess you could call him my ultimate guilty pleasure because coming to the realization that I think he's hot has been one of the most frustrating things about my relationship with pop culture lately. God I hate to love him!!!

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 9 January 2004 00:57 (twenty years ago) link

you speak of Seth Cohen, Eric, he is the "secret boyfriend" of every girl I know. yet I hear the actor is as annoying as he seems.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Friday, 9 January 2004 01:02 (twenty years ago) link

http://www.soapsite.com/oc/images/individuals/seth05.jpg

Don't fucking talk about my boyfriend like that.

Carey (Carey), Friday, 9 January 2004 01:03 (twenty years ago) link

God, his voice sounds more plugged up with his own self-satisfaction than John Mayer's! (I really really hate loving him.)

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 9 January 2004 01:05 (twenty years ago) link

It's like this: he's probably one of the only celeb dudes I find attractive that makes me feel like a straight girl for loving him, instead of a gay dude.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 9 January 2004 01:05 (twenty years ago) link

(uh... I mean... love ya, straight girls!)

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 9 January 2004 01:11 (twenty years ago) link

i think seth cohen is funny. and his mom is hot. peter gallagher was pissed off cuz he wanted to walk around wearing nothing but his eyebrows and smear bagels all over his wifes ass, but alas hot moms sister did not go out. Petey was pissed.

Chris V (Chris V), Friday, 9 January 2004 12:31 (twenty years ago) link

Does anyone else think the prop department uses Gypsy Moths as Peteys eyebrows?

Chris V (Chris V), Friday, 9 January 2004 14:00 (twenty years ago) link

Ha! The bagel fixation was interesting. I've sort of forgotten about Peter Gallagher's eyebrows (to the extent that it's possible) because of his character.

I think Seth Cohen rocks.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Friday, 9 January 2004 20:17 (twenty years ago) link

I like Peter Gallagher when he takes a chainsaw to all the furniture in Short Cuts.

Am I to understand that he is now among the cast of a popular television program? What is it called?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 9 January 2004 20:19 (twenty years ago) link

see thread title

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 9 January 2004 20:21 (twenty years ago) link

I'm still not sure I follow.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 9 January 2004 20:25 (twenty years ago) link

the show is called the OC! and it's great!

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 9 January 2004 20:32 (twenty years ago) link

*shrugs in incomprehension*

Somebody should start a thread about it.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 9 January 2004 20:34 (twenty years ago) link

(I'm kidding s1ocki - I just keep missing it, so I have to exaggerate my ignorance of it in order to cement over my obvious disappointment)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 9 January 2004 20:36 (twenty years ago) link

How about the scenes from the next episode where Oliver like, loses his shit?! Oh the dra-mamama!! I can't not watch this show. And wtf is up with the jock now being a "regular" dude?? Seth Cohen's cool with me, even though there's a fucking reference to Death Cab for Cutie in every goddamn episode.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Friday, 9 January 2004 20:40 (twenty years ago) link

(and I would happily bone his TV mom.)

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Friday, 9 January 2004 20:40 (twenty years ago) link

i saw Tate Donavan (Jimmy Cooper, Marissa's dad) just last week when i was in NYC

i also saw Vincent Gallo and Chris Noth (Mr. Big from Sex and the City)

JaXoN (JasonD), Friday, 9 January 2004 21:42 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah the show is overflowing with MILFs. I can't wait for Gilmore Girls to rerun the Dave scenes with Adam Brody.

Carey (Carey), Friday, 9 January 2004 22:22 (twenty years ago) link

i have yet to see "l'o.c." posters here, sadly

amateur!st (amateurist), Saturday, 10 January 2004 17:51 (twenty years ago) link

I like Peter Gallagher when he takes a chainsaw to all the furniture in Short Cuts.

That was Peter Gallagher? How he has fallen.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 12 January 2004 08:45 (twenty years ago) link

this show is crack.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 02:57 (twenty years ago) link

seriously, it made me so happy tonight, you don't even know.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 04:19 (twenty years ago) link

I want to kill Oliver what an annoying little fuck. Luke = Ian Ziering

Chris V (Chris V), Thursday, 15 January 2004 13:09 (twenty years ago) link

Chino needs to dump Marissa, aside from a nice pair of shoulder blades she now has no redeeming qualities whatsoever.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Thursday, 15 January 2004 18:54 (twenty years ago) link

marissa and that creepy eddie haskell fuck deserve each other. like i said, the young ladies on the show are total duds! it makes me want to weep when i think of poor, sweet, adorable seth saddled with a shrill bottle-blond who has no idea how to wear plaid. it really does.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 15 January 2004 18:58 (twenty years ago) link

So what's the deal with Oliver? He has some dark secret that we don't know about, right? And he's transferring to the OC high school. I hope Ryan gives him a big frickin beatdown. And dude, seeing Seth in old-man pajamas was more annoying than either those chicks.
