Whats with all the littering? (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 29 March 2010 19:52 (fourteen years ago) link

Apart from the Stooges cover, I think it's pretty great. But then, I would, wouldn't I.

Slayer was at one time my favorite band (and they're still up there, especially after the nice return to form World Painted Blood was), but I had it on good authority from friends with good taste that this album was an abortion and a disgrace to hardcore.

Now I'll admit to not having a big classic 80's hardcore collection -- I have Minor Threat and Black Flag of course but most of the tracks on there I'd not heard before. But I still feel like Slayer did a good job of Slayerizing the song. I can understand that my perspective isn't the same as someone who worshipped the bands they covered, but I enjoy the album for an occasional listen.

I agree though that the Stooges cover isn't so good - what's the point of changing the lyrical bent, which was interesting, into something generic and stupid?

yeah, it's not as bad as i had heard but not so hot either

i dispute their attitude

Brio, Tuesday, 30 March 2010 01:52 (fourteen years ago) link

well I'm less likely to pull it out cuz when you put an album of covers up against an album of originals for Slayer, which one am I gonna choose each time?

Phoenix in Flight (Cattle Grind), Tuesday, 30 March 2010 01:55 (fourteen years ago) link

their cover of dr. know (mr. freeze) just made me want to listen to dr. know. uh, pretty much ditto for the rest of the album, too.

i'll admit I only bought it to be a completist. Kind of why I bought God Hates Us All despite hating it.

xpost pissing Ian Mackaye off is a good way to ensure punks won't want to listen to your album either.

Phoenix in Flight (Cattle Grind), Tuesday, 30 March 2010 02:07 (fourteen years ago) link

Indeed, I fired off an angry missive to MRR as soon as that album came out asking what Ian Mackaye would think and pointing out that there is no movement in a bad mouth.

I am kind of curious as to how the album would have turned out if they stuck to their original plans, i.e. covering 70's metal songs like Deep Purple and the like....

Judging by their IN-A-Gadda-Da-Vida cover, probably not so well....well and I doubt they coulda pulled off Blackmore's guitarwork.

Phoenix in Flight (Cattle Grind), Tuesday, 30 March 2010 02:29 (fourteen years ago) link

the leads that is, not the painfully easy rhythms

Phoenix in Flight (Cattle Grind), Tuesday, 30 March 2010 02:29 (fourteen years ago) link

really, no one should cover slayer and slayer shouldn't cover anyone.

I dig "gemini" (one of the originals on this).

oh wait, the part where they speed up for 30secs is pretty lame.

not sure why I never sold this album.

original bgm, Tuesday, 30 March 2010 03:16 (fourteen years ago) link

because you'd only get ten cents for it. that's why i still have my copy.

I'm probably really going to regret this, but click here for my probably objectionable take on it.

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 30 March 2010 16:14 (fourteen years ago) link

Nothing at all objectionable about that.

Bill Magill, Tuesday, 30 March 2010 16:28 (fourteen years ago) link

Blowing my ears out with some metal has definitely gotten me through some rough times.

PS-hope your son recovered all right.

Bill Magill, Tuesday, 30 March 2010 16:29 (fourteen years ago) link

He did, thanks. :)
