my son discovered the awe & mystery of that song through SCTV. he thinks the original is the funniest thing ever and refuses to believe it was a huge hit played on the radio.

Richard Harris statue in Thomas St. in Limerick is godawful! Its up there with the MJ Craven Cottage one for me for sheer wretchedness. The dude looks like a constiapted badger.....

I had been thinking about "A Man Called Horse" which I had saw a few times as a kid with my dad who loved westerns (and of course war movies).

I found it to stream with commercials on one of the sites and watched it again last night.

I liked it and still squirmed on the Vow to the Sun scene. They would have made it much more gory now.

The movie would never be made this way now, I loved how quiet the film was pretty much leaving out soundtrack for a more natural sound. It's probably way too slow for many modern viewers, but I thought it was quite lovely if perhaps a bit awkward by technique how they blended in the nature scenes (from different film formats) into the movie.

Eventually I want to go back and watch "Cromwell" again, which I was surprised to realize he did same year as "A Man Called Horse". I saw Cromwell years ago and would like to eventually reprise as I thought it was an interesting movie.

"Was that him (the actor's name is "Richard Harris") in the opening of Guns of Navarone (as the soldier telling Gregory Peck and his commander how hopeless the mission is)? It doesn't look like how I remember him..."

Indeed it was, Joe from nineteen years ago. I never realised he was supposed to be Australian, which is why he says 'bloody' all the time:

"First, you've got that bloody old fortress on top of that bloody cliff. Then you've got the bloody cliff overhang. You can't even see the bloody cave, let alone the bloody guns. And anyway, we haven't got a bloody bomb big enough to smash that bloody rock. And that's the bloody truth, sir."

It's surprising that despite having Richard Harris, Oliver Reed, and David Hemmings in the cast, there aren't any tales of drunken antics from the filming of Gladiator, so I assume they all filmed their parts separately. David Hemming was in Juggernaut as well. That's a criminally underrated film. It's an odd blend of ahead-of-its-time special forces action and modern-life-is-rubbish circa 1974.

I also rewatched A Man Called Horse in recent times, not having seen it since it came out, and was surprised that I mostly enjoyed it and didn’t cringe. Also seem to remember some kind of reference to it in an Almodóvar movie.
