the badu album this sounds most like (so far at least) is Worldwide Underground! that's the one where she did all these early-80s funk jams before, except on this one they're way more focused

gone baby, don't be long is beautiful

Violent (J0rdan S.), Friday, 26 March 2010 06:44 (fourteen years ago) link

when she starts riffing on biggie lyrics its like me singing in the shower

deej khalifa (deej), Friday, 26 March 2010 06:44 (fourteen years ago) link

I notice she does it twice over the course of the album

stephen juaquin (The Reverend), Friday, 26 March 2010 06:46 (fourteen years ago) link

what's the other -- i'm reading & not really paying attention to lyrics atm

Violent (J0rdan S.), Friday, 26 March 2010 06:47 (fourteen years ago) link

theres gonna be a lotta slow singing and flower bringin if my burglar alarm starts ringin

deej khalifa (deej), Friday, 26 March 2010 06:51 (fourteen years ago) link

I think "Turn Me Away" and "Gone Baby, Don't Be Long" are my immediate faves

stephen juaquin (The Reverend), Friday, 26 March 2010 07:03 (fourteen years ago) link

gone baby, gone baby, don't be looooong

stephen juaquin (The Reverend), Friday, 26 March 2010 08:25 (fourteen years ago) link

there's some great theremin-esque action on this record btw

prob that kaos pad she always is messing with live

Nope, it's a theremin.

Please Do Not Swagga Jack Me (Matos W.K.), Friday, 26 March 2010 08:43 (fourteen years ago) link

you sure? its not a theremin she uses when she plays live...

Wat ho, goatee'd man? Thy skinnee jenes hath byrn'd my corneyas. (stevie), Friday, 26 March 2010 08:55 (fourteen years ago) link

ok i KNOW there's an uncensored version of "you loving me" because they played it to us, so it had better find its way to me at some point

Out My Mind, Just in Time ... just ...

Out. My. Mind. Just. In. Time.

queen frostine (Eric H.), Friday, 26 March 2010 11:46 (fourteen years ago) link

Overall, settling into this one. It doesn't instantly hit me like the last one did, but it's gonna grow on me. The "Intimate Friends" riff is probably the weakest joint. Also not quite taken with the Madlib one yet, either.

queen frostine (Eric H.), Friday, 26 March 2010 11:49 (fourteen years ago) link

Nope, it's a theremin.

No one is credited with theremin. My guess is that it's the moogerfooger.

Andy K, Friday, 26 March 2010 12:42 (fourteen years ago) link

She's definitely returned to the pre-New Amerykah ethos on this one.

"PREE-pare to have your shit rearranged"

Pre-AmErykah ethos, but post-AmErykah production. Not necessarily "best of both worlds," but I'm glad to at least hear it's not simply another Mama's Gun.

queen frostine (Eric H.), Friday, 26 March 2010 13:00 (fourteen years ago) link

Obligatory posthumous Dilla jam is fantastic.

queen frostine (Eric H.), Friday, 26 March 2010 13:01 (fourteen years ago) link

The love songs have the floating-underwater vibe in which she specializes; when expressing affection it's more like she's testing phrases and the limits of her feelings than aiming them at someone concrete.

Article in latest EQ magazine suggests that's because she (like Marvin Gaye) sings out a melody and then eventually works up lyrics to match those phrases.

queen frostine (Eric H.), Friday, 26 March 2010 13:05 (fourteen years ago) link

we do not have confirmation that (like marvin gaye) she records her vocals sitting down smoking weed with her friends though, which would also add to the vibes

egregious apostrophising (schlump), Friday, 26 March 2010 13:34 (fourteen years ago) link

yes, we don't*

queen frostine (Eric H.), Friday, 26 March 2010 13:39 (fourteen years ago) link

Can't get around the fact that I'd like this album waaaaaaaaaay better if it didn't have the umpteenth reiteration of "Intimate Friends."

queen frostine (Eric H.), Friday, 26 March 2010 17:17 (fourteen years ago) link

Erykah told me it was a theremin, but who knows.

What is up with the Rick James/ Patrice Rushen/ Peaches & Herb beads she's been rocking lately lol

The Brainwasher, Saturday, 27 March 2010 23:50 (fourteen years ago) link

video is slightly corny, but it's earned since there are very few albums less revealing than Mama's Gun...what word does the purple blood spell out?

I'm definitely thinking now that Badu is a high priestess of Funk. (Here is a handy link to a thread where Mark Sinker explains how George Clinton used The Process Church of the Final Judgement as a sort of template to turn Funk into an alternative system of faith and beliefs.)

*there should actually be the word 'possible' in front of the word 'alternative'...nothing was ever actually set in stone...
