i kind of wish there was a targetting lockon or something, even just for sniping guys from the parachute

antexit, Thursday, 25 March 2010 15:02 (fourteen years ago) link

For me this just looks like one of those games that seems amazing for the first 4-6 hours / look at this world & these toys you can play with in it! but after that it's the kind of thing I'd never touch again - like Far Cry 2 or the last Red Faction game or Infamous (actually it looks most like Mercenaries 2 w/o co-op, a game I skipped anyway). Or what was that B&W open world WWII game set in Paris that came out a few months ago - I've already forgotten? Too many of these sort of mid-tier open world games already this generation IMO.

damn, the demo is so much fun.
i'm gonna wait on this, but it looks like a must get.
Every review seems to suggest that the "game" is no fun, but just exploring and blowing shit up is non-stop wonderland.

forksclovetofu, Friday, 26 March 2010 19:34 (fourteen years ago) link

I've been playing this demo so much. It was a mistake not getting it last week I think. Next time I have the chance, I'm picking it up.

It's okay. Your advice was good -- I couldn't have known at the time how amazing the game is.

finally going to get back into some gaming, and will download this tonight. is it playable as a single player?

bracken free ditch (Ste), Tuesday, 30 March 2010 12:59 (fourteen years ago) link

It's single player only, and yes, the demo is very playable in a "pick up for half an hour, ignore missions and fuck around" way.

Is it a bit tiresome how huge and samey the map seems?

antexit, Tuesday, 30 March 2010 17:41 (fourteen years ago) link

okay had a bash at this. seems okaaay, but not totally grabbed by it which i was surprised at because it sounded like my sort of thing. i still might get hold of the full thing, when the price is right.

i don't like the chopper controls in this at all

bracken free ditch (Ste), Tuesday, 6 April 2010 22:20 (fourteen years ago) link

I needed a new run around being a dick and causing mayhem game - so far, this is outstanding at that. I guess I'll have to do enough of the story to unlock all the toys, but the "plot" sure isn't much of a hook. Found the Mile High Club, which I plan to shoot down at the first opportunity (I had a weaponless chopper and no explosives, and then had to make dinner). Huge frickin' world - really surprised at just how full it is.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 7 April 2010 00:57 (fourteen years ago) link

i've only played the demo, so would you recommend the purchase? i need something vast to keep me amused

bracken free ditch (Ste), Wednesday, 7 April 2010 07:43 (fourteen years ago) link

(the demo didn't last long, and i only covered a few hundred yards of area so i couldn't get the sense of a 'large world' from that)

Should have stated I had to stop playing and make dinner. Though that would be cool if there were times where the game just switched you up and went Cooking Mama on your ass.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 7 April 2010 11:46 (fourteen years ago) link

tracer you've never played any GTAs?

etrian odysseus (cozen), Wednesday, 7 April 2010 11:47 (fourteen years ago) link

I've only played a few hours so haven't seen that much - but when the map opens up and I see how little of the game I've explored it seems huge. Hope to get a little more time with it today.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 7 April 2010 11:50 (fourteen years ago) link

Apparently you can't shoot down the Mile High Club. However, I was able to fire into the club with a helicopter gunship and kill everyone and blow up all the neon signs.

I'm having insane amounts of fun with this game - I've now done one mission for each of the factions, but just screwed around for another 6 hours. It is incredibly huge - I've checked out less than 10% of the land. Decided to run between two dots on the map that seemed pretty close - took me almost ten minutes.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 9 April 2010 14:29 (fourteen years ago) link

Feels like one of the biggest gameworlds I've ever played (after WoW and like Daggerfall obv).

Mordy, Friday, 9 April 2010 15:03 (fourteen years ago) link

cozen - nope.

Tracer Hand, Friday, 9 April 2010 15:04 (fourteen years ago) link

Kind of pressed for cash right now, so I haven't picked this up yet, but I'm still finding funny shit to do in the demo. My latest pastimes:

1. starting a big stupid road chase and hopping from motorcycle to motorcycle, elbowing their riders off as I land

2. attracting a ton of heat, hopping on top of a car, loading it up with triggered explosives, waiting for the inevitable roadblock and sailing away at the last second on the parachute as the bomb-covered car smashes into the line of soldiers and jeeps. I worry that I may enjoy this too much.

couldn't get into the controls at first, but man it was worth it.

also was basically baffled at first what this game was all about, but it's just so simple and addictive really. can't stop playing it. stupid world cup getting in the way.

i've realised what this game reminds me of, Midwinter 2 FoF. and in some similar ways, Hunter

just started playing this, and found the mile high club within the first few hours. OMG insanity...

Ghia (stevie), Monday, 28 June 2010 22:11 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah that's a mad base. the destroying satellites mission is pretty wow too.

love how this is just so simple to play

have resisted its grasp tonight so that i can indulge in a hefty session on wednesday when no football is on.

Guru Meditation (Ste), Monday, 28 June 2010 22:28 (thirteen years ago) link

stuff to blow up gets kinda repetetive pretty quickly, but I'm still enjoying this. I'm still discovering new and unique bases for starters.

Like I was all woaah at flying by 737 happily towards a mysterious island and noticed a large tower in the distance and suddenly BLAM it knocked me out the sky. i'm guessing some kind of emp tower.

just enjoying trying to find all the stuff, like really want to complete the 'driving unique vehicles' list.

two months pass...

I'm still playing the crap out of this game. Passed 100 hours this weekend, and I've collected all the skulls, black boxes and drug drops, 100% of all the towns done (still a few things to find in a couple of the cities) and am slowly wiping out the airfields, harbors and military bases. I think I have a couple of oil rigs left to finish off as well.

Gave up on the story though - kept failing at killing the bosses on top of the towers and decided since the story sucked anyways I'd just do all the other stuff.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 27 September 2010 14:24 (thirteen years ago) link

one month passes...

ok thx to goole i have this now so here is my rundown

1. pretty fucking fun
2. airplane controls suuuuuck so much that i refuse to do the race missions
3. weirdly aimless - like the game actually kinda makes it difficult to progress down the storyline a lot of the time by putting tantalizing stuff in the way or making travel lead you through hot zones and whatever.
4. it is probable that i am stupid here, but i ran out of plantable explosives and have never found more of them anywhere, which is getting v v annoying at this point.
5. this might be one of the worst written games dialogwise ever.
6. really looks great - the level of detail is kinda o_O, especially since very little of it is actually functional.

O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 28 October 2010 17:57 (thirteen years ago) link

4. Call the black market dealer. If you haven't gotten that ability yet, you just have to hope to find some more.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 28 October 2010 18:15 (thirteen years ago) link

Can someone describe for me what a blissful 30 minutes of this game is like?

macaroni rascal (polyphonic), Thursday, 28 October 2010 18:16 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah i can call the black market dealer but plantable explosives dont show up so i dont know if i just havent unlocked them yet or?

O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 28 October 2010 18:18 (thirteen years ago) link

I thought "triggered explosives" were pretty early on. You unlock stuff by causing chaos, so just shoot up some water towers, generators and the like.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 28 October 2010 18:21 (thirteen years ago) link

another thing that keeps coming back to me is that its basically a tropical locale mapped onto the basic functionality of red faction guerilla with batman arkham grappling hook thrown in. its a bizarrely backwards looking game in a lot of ways.

xpost yeah idk, ive blown a ton of shit up. im probably just missing something stupid tbh

O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 28 October 2010 18:47 (thirteen years ago) link

When in doubt, blow up more. Maybe try a few faction missions.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 28 October 2010 18:51 (thirteen years ago) link

complete more mission yes, certain missions will unlock checkpoint facilities that contain free weapons + grenades

F-Unit (Ste), Friday, 29 October 2010 00:14 (thirteen years ago) link

but generally raiding the facilities finds you free ammo anyway

Just got this for under £10 from Zavvi - only played half an hour so far and I think I'm going to like it. Can't quite get to grips with the grapple hook controls yet but I'm looking forward to using it for lots of crazy shit away from the story mode. Shoulder buttons being the wrong way around is annoying (R2 instead of R1 to shoot) - dunno if I can change that in the options. Voice acting is *really* bad. Ground combat & transport jacking feels very like Mercenaries 2 which I've played the shit out of.

great thing to do with this game: climb a mountain to find a citadel, kill everyone in it, blow up everything and then leap off the side of the mountain. unfortunately, this is more or less the ONLY thing to do with this game.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 18 January 2011 05:02 (thirteen years ago) link

i loved this game but there was def a point where the stupidity of the writing and story became more than just "eh". because i kinda wanted the repetition to add up to something, i guess

goole, Tuesday, 18 January 2011 06:09 (thirteen years ago) link

revisited this recently, bloody loving it. I should be complaing that it's fairly repetetive but somehow I keep finding things to do picking up hidden stuff or randomly destroying government property. My favourite right now is taking out the antenna stations. Twanging the supporting cables with my chopper.

The dialogue is hilarious. There's a mission where you have to pick up some prostitute and the woman who is telling you about the mission constantly bad mouths the 'filthy whore'

sooo many missions too.

that's what i felt too, but i think that's because a) i didn't really stick to the missions because the scripts and acting were too dull and (more importantly) b) i found the missions very hard.

Joe Romeo, Concerned New Yorker (stevie), Wednesday, 19 October 2011 20:49 (twelve years ago) link

yeah like i said, man, nearly a year ago now, the stupidity was an afterthought for much of the game... until it wasn't. there was no reason for the mission design to be so repetitive and for the writing and v/o to be so bad.

completing the big city in this one was too damn hard; I got 3/4 of them but on the 4th stuck at like 96% (or more? can't say, has been months). problem is that you can't use the net for help because I do not want to check every single coordinate. obsessive gameplay has its costs
