I don't listen to cover bands or the radio so overexposure is not really an issue for me

― Whats with all the littering? (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, March 24, 2010 9:31 PM (22 minutes ago)

do you live in a world where sounds are emitted from TVs movies and stores?

First and Last and Safeways ™ (jjjusten), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 21:55 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah i was abt to say, '89 was only the first year CDs outsold vinyl

what's pooping ahn (some dude), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 21:56 (fourteen years ago) link

it was the 80s. lots of people still had turntables.
yeah, but doogie was kind of ahead of his time, wasn't he? Seems like he'd at least have a discman or something.
what else did the doog have in his record collection do you think?

tylerw, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 21:57 (fourteen years ago) link

Doogie was ten years ahead of the vinyl fetishists. Cool dude.

it was the 80s. lots of people still had turntables.

That was part of my joke.

what movies was Love Shack used in?

Whats with all the littering? (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 21:59 (fourteen years ago) link

simmer down shakey love shack is great but roam is more great

that "glove slap" song from the Simpsons (to the tune of Love Shack) is funny.

tylerw, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 22:01 (fourteen years ago) link

Roam is allright but it doesn't feature Fred, who is hands-down the best feature of any B-52s song

Whats with all the littering? (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 22:02 (fourteen years ago) link

The best feature: the girls' harmonies. The second best: the guitars (Ricky's or Keith's).

nothing wrong with LS, but to my mind it is the fourth best single from this album (tho all four are admittedly brilliant). <3<3<3 the guitar solo in it.

I need to listen to the other album trax some more. it's been too long & I'm really liking the sound of "topaz."

That was part of my joke.

that's as may be, but tv's doogie howser listened to college radio & played vinyl, it was very much a character decision. tv's doogie howser could listen on anything he liked & he listened on vinyl TELLINGLY

still love Love Shack but yeah probably a bit overplayed to talk much about. Channel Z seems like such a weird choice for a 1st single given the monster hits that would come next (admittedly I've always hated that song)

BEHOLD: verses! so much shorter than the chorus!

WITNESS: dope-ass hand clappin!

GET A LOAD OF: Kate Pierson absolutely is just 100% singing her fucking balls off on that second verse!

(could only find the live version sorry foax)

Good Stuff is totally Cosmic Thing Pt. II, down to the producers and mix. Songwriting isn't as good, but still worth owning -- and you can pick up a used copy easily.

there's something about this video...it's nothing spectacular but it captures that vibe that's been kind of pointed out...the whole end-of-the-New-Wave thing, as well as the whole smiling-through-the-tears thing...it's really great

failboat fucking captain (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 25 March 2010 15:00 (fourteen years ago) link

as a kid i loved the Cosmic Thing singles but Good Stuff was the first one they put out after I started buying CDs, so for years that was the only B-52s album I had. haven't put it on in a long while but I'd probably still like it.

what's pooping ahn (some dude), Thursday, 25 March 2010 15:04 (fourteen years ago) link

I'd forgotten there was a Stipe cameo in that video.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 25 March 2010 15:06 (fourteen years ago) link

I remember thinking that "Tell It Like It T-I-S" was such a profound shark jump that I almost completely disowned their entire back catalog. I'm glad I didn't, as that would have been really silly, but still: not a fan of that song/era.

Good Stuff is totally Cosmic Thing Pt. II

MINUS Cindy Wilson, though, which makes as big a difference as Ricky Wilson not being there.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 25 March 2010 15:10 (fourteen years ago) link

"Is That You Mo-Dean?" is pretty good.

(about Cindy Wilson's absence making Good Stuff seem weaker)

meanwhile, I'm listening to "Love Shack" right now, and as far as overplayed songs go, this is about the cream of the crop...

pretty sure that people who hate "love Shack" eat live kittens

That video reminds me of the huge adolescent crush I had on Kate P (& also Cindy, but to a slightly lesser extent).

Good Stuff is for sure worth owning if you're a B's fan (1 cent on amazon,) but I don't think it hits any of the highs of Cosmic Thing, and some of the lows (The World's Green Laughter, Bad Influence) are pretty low.

I turn it up when I hear the banjo (Dan Peterson), Thursday, 25 March 2010 16:34 (fourteen years ago) link

Maybe I'm alone, but "Good Stuff" is at least as good as "Deadbeat Club."

filling the medicare donut hole with the semen of liberal (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 25 March 2010 16:36 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah, I'm not feeling that, but I do have an extended mix of Good Stuff with added horns that's really good.

I think the first four songs on the album, plus Mo-Dean, are pretty good, but second half really trails off.

I turn it up when I hear the banjo (Dan Peterson), Thursday, 25 March 2010 16:45 (fourteen years ago) link

Oh, but is Mo-dean the one that ends repeating "Astral Projector" ad infinitum? That's kind of annoying.

I turn it up when I hear the banjo (Dan Peterson), Thursday, 25 March 2010 16:48 (fourteen years ago) link

Maybe I'm alone, but "Good Stuff" is at least as good as "Deadbeat Club."

I sort of agree with this but I am not really a fan of "Deadbeat Club".

ALLAH! *rolls on floor* (HI DERE), Thursday, 25 March 2010 17:16 (fourteen years ago) link

"Good Stuff" is much, much better than "Deadbeat Club." Nobody's dangin' on the Deadbeats.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 25 March 2010 17:19 (fourteen years ago) link

Oh, but is Mo-dean the one that ends repeating "Astral Projector" ad infinitum? That's kind of annoying.

Maybe, but I like the massed vocals that join in along the way.

Funplex is better than Good Stuff.

Hideous Lump, Friday, 26 March 2010 03:42 (fourteen years ago) link

Agreed.

Okay, I relistened to Good Stufflast night, and some of the stuff I thought I didn't like much was better than I remembered. I STILL don't own Funplex and need to get.
