For whoever it was that enjoyed the Seijun Suzuki films, like Branded to Kill or Tokyo Drifter, I highly recommend the slightly less well known Pale Flower (dir. Masashiro Shinoda), which is also available for streaming. It's a slightly more coherent, but equally stylized Yakuza film.

Holy crap, they added a lot of Fox TV shows today. All of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Arrested Development, 24, Prison Break, Dollhouse, Firefly, X-Files. Also, Black Adder.

A slew of new criterion just landed!

forksclovetofu, Saturday, 3 April 2010 15:47 (fourteen years ago) link

Is that the criterion version of Cool as Ice?

Jeff, Saturday, 3 April 2010 15:52 (fourteen years ago) link

and the testament of dr. mabuse, yes.

forksclovetofu, Saturday, 3 April 2010 16:39 (fourteen years ago) link

Is there any good way to sort the newly released instant watch stuff? I always just seem to get a random assortment - didn't see any new criterions :(

Jeff LeVine, Saturday, 3 April 2010 17:22 (fourteen years ago) link

You can queue and view from here:

forksclovetofu, Saturday, 3 April 2010 17:30 (fourteen years ago) link

also, here's a pretty avidly updated criterion list:

Thanks forks, that instantwatcher was exactly the kind of thing I was looking for - much better than browsing the messed up netflix site as it actually makes sense - cool (weird?) it's all linked up too

Jeff LeVine, Saturday, 3 April 2010 17:43 (fourteen years ago) link

i check that site kinda daily.

forksclovetofu, Saturday, 3 April 2010 17:56 (fourteen years ago) link

Indeed. The iPhone app is pretty good too.

anyone using wii for streaming? thinking about doing this in my studio mostly as a way to listen to shows while painting. wii seems perfect for this since i wont care if it looks terrible.

jeff, Saturday, 3 April 2010 20:53 (fourteen years ago) link

Does anybody remember the name of that documentary about movie lovers in NYC who spend all their time going from theater to theater all day trying to see everything - probably came out 5-7 years ago?

Jeff LeVine, Saturday, 3 April 2010 21:27 (fourteen years ago) link

cinemania

Thanks!

Instantwatcher is really nice, but everybody forgets that Netflix puts out RSS feeds (which are updated faster than IW):

http://www.netflix.com/RSSFeeds

Your Queue, New Releases and New Choices to Watch Instantly are good. If you're not checking your reader daily though, it might be too much to sort through since new stuff gets added every day or so.

Also I love that the dude who is tracking all the Criterion releases is also tracking all the Troma movies.

Weird, I've had mine for a couple of weeks now. Haven't tried, it and don't really plan too. I can already stream netflix through my TV and DVD player. I just got it to have.

Jeff, Monday, 12 April 2010 12:18 (fourteen years ago) link

it's okay. a little tricky to control with the wii remote.

jeff, Monday, 12 April 2010 18:47 (fourteen years ago) link

I watched an ep of (lol) "walking with dinosaurs" and the video quality wasn't great.

Today is a dangerous day for parents: massive piles of Barney, Bob the Builder, Thomas the Tank Engine and the unbearable lightness of being.
children's classics, all.

First season of Archer - before DVD, huh!

Lots of gay movies released on the 23rd. Including The Gay Bed & Breakfast of Terror.

Jeff, Sunday, 25 April 2010 17:05 (fourteen years ago) link

As much as I like that title, not falling into the trap.

Nhex, Sunday, 25 April 2010 23:10 (fourteen years ago) link

Two strong recommendations:
Jazz on a Summer's Day
The Champagne Safari

Mordy, Sunday, 2 May 2010 05:56 (fourteen years ago) link

two weeks pass...

I was complaining a little while ago about how you couldn't tell if stuff was HD streaming on your PC/Mac before through the web interface. I just realized recently that's because it WASN'T streaming in HD at all until last week:

http://blog.netflix.com/2010/05/now-streaming-in-hd-on-pc-and-mac_14.html

Selection is really limited though in comparison to what you can get on HD on your TV/video game system/BR player, though.

District 9! Which I didn't like!
A BUNCH of Haneke.
I also think i'm gonna watch cloudy with a chance of meatballs.

forksclovetofu, Friday, 21 May 2010 14:26 (thirteen years ago) link

I didn't get around to seeing that, cool. Also if you somehow managed to never see Amelie in the last ten years, here's your chance.
