Generation is my pick on Asteroid. It really goes off on one:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KWsc5s_YexA

But Ecsta-Deal is the one I really remember. It's featured brilliantly on an old Justin Robertson mix tape from way back. Best ever Plastikman - Spastik -> something else mix I've ever heard.

Honk Honk!:

Was the Justin Robertson tape a Heavenly Social thing off the front cover of Mixmag? If so that mix was ace. The John Carter one for NME of all people was pretty good as well but not a patch on his Essential Selection mix that had loads of ragga, jungle and electro on it.

The only tune I've ever heard by this guy is Lobotomie, which the Chemical Brothers used to play all the time. An acid monster on a par with Acperience. But I just treated it as a brilliant one-off - must check out some more of his tracks.

It was on that ubiquitous but still pretty ace mix 'Brit Hop And Amyl House' which was big beat hunkering down on its marks preparing to attempt to clear the shark tank.

Best track on that = Leftfield mix of Renegade Soundwave.

Another good free tape of that type of stuff was the Fatboy Slim "Beat up the NME" one, but I realise this is derailing this thread...

Props to the thread starter. I'm going to spend all saturday afternoon re-exploring this stuff.

I hadn't heard "Ecsta-Deal" before, thanks for the link! It sounds awesome!

There does seem to be a distinct difference between his freaky-but-still-clubby early 90s material like "Ecsta-Deal" or "Acid Phase", and the abstract acid workouts on Asteroid... I don't know any of his post-1996 material, I wonder if Asteroid was just a one-off experiment, or if he continued down that road?

It was but it was Select I think - pretty sure I still have it. Near the start of the tape there is some odd ass sample of a woman ranting at some US politician struggling to retain his composure (this is probably really famous idk)

The Jon Carter one was a Select tape too, it was an abrdidged version of the Heavenly Social mix, but still ace.

Here's a little gift for you:

Emmanuel Top - Spherique

This is possibly the best tune he's ever done; they guy is simply a master of buildup and release.

Tuomas, Friday, 19 March 2010 14:48 (fourteen years ago) link

Just blasted the youngsters in the office with this. It was met with approving nods and fitted in quite well with the Juke that they're currently playing.

Doran, Friday, 19 March 2010 17:02 (fourteen years ago) link

Nice that youngsters can appreciate some old shit!

His final (?) record Mars was ace (the Kai Tracid rmx too). Anyone know what he's been up to since '03?

Siegbran, Sunday, 21 March 2010 15:17 (fourteen years ago) link

Apparently he put a new track called "Idéalisme" on his Facebook fanpage last month, you can listen to it there:

Sounds nice, though kinda predictably Emmanuel Top.

Tuomas, Sunday, 21 March 2010 15:53 (fourteen years ago) link

Also, on his Twitter page he says he's looking for someone to design the look for his new album, so apparently something is cooking up.

I'd never before heard this particular track he released as "Krankehaus", holy shit what a tune!

Does anyone do hard trance like this anymore? I haven't paid much attention to the trance scene ever since Goa and pop trance took over and (in my opinion) kinda ruined it.

Thanks for the link & the news!

Hard/acid trance never went away. This one is a few years old but I love it:

That's the one!

side A of the Select tape from 1995:

Sweet!

But this: http://www.supermoving.co.uk/JDJJR.html is even sweeter. Side A and B. The latter features what I remember JR describing at the time as "honest trance" (Humate's 3.1), which sums it up pretty well I think.

What a great fucking mix.

Generation is a huge record. Possibly my favourite acid trak.

Sounds brilliant in the context of Donato Dozzy's ssgs mix (Part 2, approx 10 mins in): donato dozzy live @ labyrinth 2008

sam500, Monday, 22 March 2010 03:53 (fourteen years ago) link

no mention of "lobotomie" yet?? i thought it was his biggest record

i love how the kick drum just disappears for the last what, like three minutes of it, and the acid squiggles just ratchet up and UP AND UP AND UP and i presume the DJ is supposed to be bringing in the next track to explode into efflorescence when the beeps become unmanageable

Tracer Hand, Monday, 22 March 2010 11:29 (fourteen years ago) link

I think "Acid Phase" is his biggest record, on Last.fm it has five times as many plays as the second most popular tune, which is "Turkish Bazar". "Lobotomie" is great too, though.

Did you know that the weird bit of poetry ("the music was new, black, polished chrome and came over the summer like liquid night") sampled in "Turkish Bazar" is actually by Jim Morrison? I never would've guessed it, but one day I googled the words and found out it's from some odd spoken-word poetry album of his.

Anyone know what he's been up to since '03?

He's always been quite an enterpreneur. He has been running his publishing company (Editions Top, Tourcoing) and then in 2008 he bought a club just over the border in Mouscron (Belgium) which is now called Barocca. But it's quite hard to keep track of the man, maybe some of this is just unsubstantiated rumors.

By the way, before it was remade into Seven Days And One Week there was this:
