Sorry to be a dick, but pretty much your fault dude. If it was asked for on Friday and, if I'm reading you right, you still hadn't done it by the end of the day Monday, I think she had a right to try and seek out someone else to help her.

My fault that I forgot? Yes. Not denying that. But that is not why she escalated and tried to get help elsewhere. She escalated and asked for additional help because of my non-response to two emails I hadn't even seen yet, which implied to the managers who weren't abreast of the situation that I had ignored three emails requesting this.

I should also note that we have made many complaints to this department for the short turnaround time they request for the testing, due to scenarios like the above...and that the only reason I had to do this retesting in the first place is cuz the chick screwed it up the first time.

Cattle Grind, Thursday, 18 March 2010 03:36 (fourteen years ago) link

i should also note that the importance of what she needed done versus the importance of what I was doing was weighted far more in my direction. but, then again, I may have blown my anger at the situation out of proportion due to the bad day I had yesterday.

Cattle Grind, Thursday, 18 March 2010 03:38 (fourteen years ago) link

Well yeah, obviously there's a lot of other influences that I don't know about, really not trying to bag on you. Maybe I'm not following your timeline correctly, perhaps you can clear it up. You say she asked you on Friday, you forgot. Then you said you also forgot on Monday, is that right? So did she send the two unread (by you) e-mails on Friday or Monday? If Friday, then yeah, I see your side a little more. If Monday though, sorry, I think she's totally in the right to handle it like she did. Think of it from her end - she asked you on Friday and as far as she was concerned you still hadn't done it by the end of day Monday. I think that long with no response is a valid frame for he to be a little concerned.

Yeah sorry if I was that lady I might've CCed someone else at that point too. Simply so I could get someone else to help out!

ABBAcab (Trayce), Thursday, 18 March 2010 03:50 (fourteen years ago) link

there is something bizarre about her approach here. wouldn't the best thing to do be to contact you in the middle of the day on monday when it's reasonably certain that you're there?

call all destroyer, Thursday, 18 March 2010 03:56 (fourteen years ago) link

jon: no worries, I respect your opinion.

call all destroyer: that's what I'm getting at. She obviously had the intent to remind me, but she waited until after most people in the office leave for the day.

Cattle Grind, Thursday, 18 March 2010 04:21 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah--hard to say if it's retardedness or passive aggression.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 18 March 2010 04:23 (fourteen years ago) link

I guess it's also frustrating as my review is coming up. I'm a top performer and always have been, am looked as a leader in the group, but I had a rough patch where I unfortunately let my personal life spill into work. That combined with an unusual series of illnesses led my performance to not be up to my usual standard. Not everybody even noticed, but some people did, and my manager got concerned.

In the last 8 months, I've completely reversed that negative trend and more than compensated for the brief bad blip on my radar, so something like this, even though it probably will not even be remembered in two days time, I took as something that could reinforce some of the negative beliefs to my peers that I unfortunately bestowed upon myself last year.

Cattle Grind, Thursday, 18 March 2010 04:25 (fourteen years ago) link

Just judging by your descriptions, I would die a slow painful death if I were employed where you work..

mikebee (BATTAGS), Friday, 19 March 2010 00:59 (fourteen years ago) link

turns out it was a big misunderstanding due to a technology flaw - she thought I was out of the office because she didn't see me online due to a name change I'd processed which required her to readd me. so I did overreact.

Cattle Grind, Friday, 19 March 2010 03:36 (fourteen years ago) link

Added to the list of things I've learned about my annoying co-worker:
- his fraternity brother's cat has a tumor the size of a golf ball on its face.
- he like Costco.
- he will be hanging out with his girlfriend this weekend.
- he cannot wait until he has money, so that he can have a place to barbecue.

STFU.

anybody have those coworkers who see you eating lunch, or are on the phone, and start yammering away asking for your help? and don't mind how much of your time they take up, they dont want you to leave until they get what it is they're doing?

Cattle Grind, Friday, 19 March 2010 17:34 (fourteen years ago) link

currently two ladies beside me are ringing around to see if anybody has a 'child of prague' idol that they can decapitate to ensure good wedding on a wedding date at the end of next month.

DarraghmacKwacz (darraghmac), Friday, 19 March 2010 17:37 (fourteen years ago) link

wtf? that's appropriate work convo?

Cattle Grind, Friday, 19 March 2010 17:38 (fourteen years ago) link

well, the wedding is only a month away, obviously this is a looming emergency.

DarraghmacKwacz (darraghmac), Friday, 19 March 2010 17:40 (fourteen years ago) link

this is way the fuck upthread at this point - but "wildly inappropriate conversations" in the office are my reason d'etre.
especially mid-meeting.
it is the funnest thing ever and i will never stop. ever.

thank you, co-worker, for taking a dump, blocking the toilet, making no attempt to fix the situation OR let anyone else know to come fix it for you (how fucking hard is it to use a plunger???).

Is this some kind of catholic thing? o_0

ABBAcab (Trayce), Sunday, 21 March 2010 00:25 (fourteen years ago) link

it's 'some kind' of catholic thing (at least i'm pretty sure a child of prague is an idol of the infant christ) mixed with some kind of hedge witch thing. a mix that's fairly common out where i'm at.

Someone at my last job used to complain about women leaving "menstrual blood" in the toilets. Turned out it was the red Toilet Duck the cleaners used.

In Ireland some brides will place an Infant of Prague statue outside their house the night before their wedding. This is meant to ensure that there will be good weather for the wedding day.[citation needed]

"Tradition had it that the Infant of Prague worked better without the head, so you were only delighted when your mam decapitated yours, years ago when she was cleaning."

Never heard of any of this in my life, my ancestors left a lot of tradition behind in the old country.

So, its kind of f-ed up when the thing I'm looking forward to least about Monday morning is dealing with my annoying co-worker, isn't it?

Clerk all KNOWIN (B.L.A.M.), Monday, 22 March 2010 13:38 (fourteen years ago) link

We have a problem with half our IT dept being split between London & Brighton, with all sorts of related political and ideological differences.

The latest is that the Brighton developers are for some reason incapable of working with NULL values in databases, so we have to add "dummy" entries with an ID of 0 so we can set all the NULL values to 0 and still have a foreign key constraint on our tables. This won't mean much to non-relational database people but rest assured is completely fucking retarded.

wait, what the hell

big time (HI DERE), Monday, 22 March 2010 17:50 (fourteen years ago) link

My manager went straight to the CTO saying we shouldn't do this but was shot down.

The head of Brighton IT is a total moron but somehow has a lot of clout with the business. This is just the latest in a long line of completely stupid decisions...

Colonel Poo, Monday, 22 March 2010 17:53 (fourteen years ago) link

Male. The toilets are unisex.

Poo: dontcha love when decisions get made out of someone's sheer inability...no...REFUSAL to learn how to do it the right way?

― ned ragú (suzy),

I quote a wikipedia article and you tell me to look up the wikipedia article I quoted :/
The article doesn't mention decapitation, that's why I went on to find another one. Telling people to look up stuff they've just looked up = a+ zinging

eh if i were posting as some sort of omniscient expert on the subject this might be a thing. but i saw this at work, it was strange (i don't think the existence of a wikipedia article would necessarily change that) and pretty annoying behaviour from two annoying co-workers.

think I'm getting a bit tetchy on here, might be time for a sabbatical.

People at my place are either starting to play dumb, or are becoming mental midgets fast.

Yesterday I'm assigned research to determine, among other things, why a specific item was not mailed to a customer. In the end, my research determined that the person responsible for mailing the item was the person that requested the research, a fact that was documented in a very obvious manner had she bothered to look.

Wouldn't you think that even if the name didn't ring a bell, you'd at least double check to make sure it wasn't your responsibility first before wasting someone else's time? This is a frequent occurrence!

ever since my boss got married, he's scatterbrained as hell. forgets to send me invites, doesn't reply to emails or messages, is unresponsive to everyone (including a poor coworker who tried to ask him three times to get a laptop so she could work from home while nursing her poor husband back to health)...it wouldn't bother me so much if he didn't give us all the speech about how we shouldn't be letting personal lives affect work.

he also interrupts people in the middle of sentences all of the time so if you haven't made your complete point in three words, forget it...you'll never get to finish it.

I got a companywide email today announcing that all employees now get a free chiropractic adjustment every month. Wonderful. I still haven't gotten the salary and benefits I was told I would qualify for over three months ago, so it still costs me $250 a month to maintain access to a real doctor, but thank goodness I no longer have to worry about the dread SUBLUXATIONS.

a black white asian pine ghost who is fake (Telephone thing), Wednesday, 7 April 2010 03:27 (fourteen years ago) link

they can't deny you benefits if you qualify per plan provisions. that'd be an ERISA violation. have you not gotten the benefits because they simply haven't mailed you anything, or did you attempt to enroll and were you told you couldn't?

if they impede you too much in getting what you were promised, you can always go to the Department of Labor.

Phoenix in Flight (Cattle Grind), Wednesday, 7 April 2010 03:32 (fourteen years ago) link

This is a tiny company (12 people) and the promise wasn't in any formal context, just a "oh hey, you've been here a while, how about we set you up with salary and benefits if you make it through the holidays alive."

a black white asian pine ghost who is fake (Telephone thing), Wednesday, 7 April 2010 03:39 (fourteen years ago) link

"setting you up" w/ a salary is kinda important iirc

ksh, Wednesday, 7 April 2010 03:40 (fourteen years ago) link

xpost I see. Regardless of the size, though, if the company offers insurance through ERISA and the employees pay for it on a before-tax basis, they can't merely drop the ball like that or they can risk losing the ability to offer before-tax benefits. I'm sure you're probably not trying to rock the boat, but I'd be like raising holy hell over it. they have to give you at least a 31 day enrollment period too.

I'm starting to get worried my job is turning to me into an Angry Man.

I can't seem to get through a day here without getting into a strop about something, F'ing and blinding etc.

What do you do when it seems like 80% of the people you have to deal with at work are incompetent? I've been here 4 years which is the longest I've ever worked anywhere and I think it's probably at least a year too long. This team seems to spend most of its time lately tidying up other people's mistakes and working on what is probably the most badly managed "upgrade" project I have ever worked on.

I just got my wife a job at this company as well, haha. I get an "introduce a friend" bonus when she's been here 2 months, at this point I think I'm going to hand my notice in the day after that cheque clears.

Argh.
