it's worth remembering that kids these days have plain terrifying access to music, that list reads like a succession of clickthroughs on youtube

Are you honestly suggesting that teenagers are out there rampantly downloading songs by Badfinger, Jim O'Rourke and Andrew Bird? Are you going there?

Alex in NYC, Monday, 15 March 2010 23:51 (fourteen years ago) link

andrew bird is pretty popular

Deuce Bigalow: Male Juggalo (M@tt He1ges0n), Monday, 15 March 2010 23:52 (fourteen years ago) link

Why didn't she include Todd Rundgren...I hate whoever it is...

I do believe that teenagers are probably out there downloading Jim Orourke and Badfinger but regardless, she's not a teenager! She's twenty-three!

kingkongvsgodzilla, Tuesday, 16 March 2010 00:26 (fourteen years ago) link

I do think it's true that a list of favorites means something different to younger people than it does to older people -- sometimes the items refer less to in-depth long-term fandom and more to just liking something from/about an act. I mean, older people will do this with pop music, where saying "I love Stacey Q" might just mean you love "Two of Hearts" -- if you're young and on the internet a lot of stuff can work that way! An internet like a giant radio where you can love an act for whatever part of them you come across.

Plus I don't even want to get into anything about whether she can "actually" like stuff like this, but I'm not even sure there's that radical of a disjunction between most of those tastes and singing this variety of pop song! I mean, this tends to be abundantly clear to us the other way around: you'd never be surprised that Jim O'Rourke might like HER, would you? Or that I like loads of things on that list but would be reasonably impressed with myself to have made some of her music?

oɔsıqɐu (nabisco), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 00:30 (fourteen years ago) link

i'm not surprised by her list, i'm surprised people actually listen to this hideous music she makes.

I remember when I first heard this song, I remember thinking, "What the F*** HAPPENED TO GOOD MUSIC!!!!!!" sHE SOUNDS LIKE A REALLY DRUNK WOMAN AND SHOULDN'T EVEN BE NEAR A RECORDING STUDIO!!!!!! I'm a big music fan, I know exactly what I'm talking about!! Ke$ha is a disgrace to music!!!! [/b]Ke$ha's like a giant pile of crap on Mozart's face!!![/b]

yeah i mean...probably everyone on this board has a few favorite artists that noone would be able to guess just looking at a picture or meeting briefly, but there's always this feigned shock when famous people like less predictable stuff -- the old 'omg a rapper likes Coldplay!' thing -- as if they're not capable of the same dimensions as us. it's pretty hypocritical and condescending imo, to have hugely diverse listening tastes and then be skeptical of people who are young or pretty or rich or famous or just not on message boards all day having the same capacity.

I don't see a disconnect between having eclectic taste and creating shit music. I have pretty varied taste in music, but if you put a guitar in my hand don't expect me to turn into Elliot Smith.

I don't think so, no, but if he then went on to recite a long list of artists similar to Ke$ha that he claimed were influencing his music, that would strike me as a statement from out of leftfield

Let's also realize, setting out to be the next Sun Ra or Roky Erikson isn't a sure path to fame and fortune.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Tuesday, 16 March 2010 09:07 (fourteen years ago) link

...as sure a path to fame and fortune as partnering with Dr. Luke and Benny Blanco.

Not that I want to agree with the original thesis, but I can't help but feel that this notion that every young person (or thereabouts) with internet access is rocking to the Jim O'Rourke and Roky Erickson and Matmos and The Dead Milkmen is slightly inaccurate.

FC Tom Tomsk Club (Merdeyeux), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 12:00 (fourteen years ago) link

I agree, it's not going to be every teenager, or even a majority of them. But even 15 years ago when I was in high school, I knew girls from the cheerleading squad or the basketball team who would listen to Clash and OpIvy records. Sometimes people can be normal/preppy/popular and still be well-rounded or have eclectic tastes.

With Kesha, you have a performing-arts-oriented woman in her mid-twenties who comes from a punk rock family, so I don't think the list is at all inappropriate.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Tuesday, 16 March 2010 12:33 (fourteen years ago) link

To be honest, the thing that has me most excited about this thread is that I used to listen to Void back in high school and had no idea that they were from my hometown, so I amended the Columbia, MD wikipedia page to include that fact.
