Gotta agree about Ichi/Antichrist not exactly being kosher recs, lol. I had to turn off Ichi after 15 minutes!

Okay so here's the list of Criterion films I know of that are available for instant streaming on netflix; it's awful close to a complete list.
Not all of these are great films (some I don't even like) but they're pretty much ALL worth watching. Get through this and you've basically done a year or two at film school.

oh and one more and then i'll stop babbling here, all the seasons of Wire In the Blood are up there, and it is by far my most loved tv show that no one else cares about at all (really more of a sequential movie-length thing about a psychologist working on super weird murder cases, its absolutely brilliantly written, acted and shot.)

First and Last and Safeways ™ (jjjusten), Wednesday, 10 March 2010 23:02 (fourteen years ago) link

I have watched both Cocaine Cowboys documentaries roughly 1243796386987162387465192634 times each since they became streamable. also the IT Crowd is very much not the best show but I've watched every streaming episode at least twice so w/e.

/no cobo (jamescobo), Wednesday, 10 March 2010 23:19 (fourteen years ago) link

Playtime is an amazing movie but is really one of those movies you should see in the highest quality possible (ie not streaming digitally) - there's so much stuff going on that you really need to be able to see it.

I tried to watch Wire in the Blood and thought it was pretty bad, sorry.

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 10 March 2010 23:28 (fourteen years ago) link

n/a, i'm able to watch most of my streaming stuff in HD or damned close to it!

forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 23:29 (fourteen years ago) link

gonna try wire in the blood

forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 23:30 (fourteen years ago) link

its ok, like i said no one else seems to give a shit about it other than me, so idk xpost to n/a

First and Last and Safeways ™ (jjjusten), Wednesday, 10 March 2010 23:31 (fourteen years ago) link

I feel like even the HD streaming stuff isn't really the same quality as even a regular DVD. I'm not really snobby about this usually, I just think it's important for Playtime. Really though, the theater is the best place to see Playtime, if possible.

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 10 March 2010 23:32 (fourteen years ago) link

I ain't arguing; tati is all about nuance

The time windows seem to be getting more prevalent on instant as their library gets bigger.

Louis C.K.: Chewed Up - dude is a funny guy

did the picture cropping seem totally fucked up in this on instant?

I've had a couple instant films get screwed up through xbox live but work fine on the web.

bnw, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 23:35 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah, louis WAS fucked up in aspect; maybe it's fixable?

forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 23:39 (fourteen years ago) link

another one i hit like that was blink w/ madeline stowe. she plays a blind woman but the movie has no sound! so confusing.

will anyone rep for trailer park boys?

xxxxxxxpost

one of the best moviegoing experiences I ever had in my life was when I went to go see the 70mm print of Playtime at the Egyptian Theater a couple of years ago. plus it was the English dub, which I would ordinarily find offensively shitty but w/ Playtime it was incredibly liberating being able to let my eyes wander all over all that screen space picking out details. oh, and for some reason there were a bunch of kids in the theater too and it TOTALLY worked; they went into the same shell-shocked awe that all the wine-sipping turtleneck-wearing cineastes as soon as it started. A++++++++++++++++ would see again.

Nice! Definitely dug those. If you're still in the mood for more Johnny To after that, Exiled is also available on streaming.

I've been streaming Spartcus: Blood and Sand. Hilarious.

okay this is like the first time I've encountered ppl in the context of ILX who have said positive things about The IT Crowd

so wrong dan, read the I.T. crowd thread.

Is spartacus worth watching?

forksclovetofu, Thursday, 11 March 2010 02:52 (fourteen years ago) link

Uh, it's pretty bad actually. Guilty pleasure that occasionally is almost good.

Jeff, Thursday, 11 March 2010 03:07 (fourteen years ago) link

Like a lower budget 300 with more blood and breasts.

Jeff, Thursday, 11 March 2010 03:07 (fourteen years ago) link

But it has Xena in it!

I tried the pilot. Appreciated the trashiness, but it was just way too slow. Nudity yay, 300 effects zzz.

A couple of quick things:

YES I've seen Dr Horrible, it's fucking awesome

I started watching Baker's Key to Time season a few weeks ago and it's kind of terrifying how well those stories hold up

from what I've heard about the show, you're better off just finding the clips on Huffington Post or wherever.

also somewhat related: just met with one of my new co-workers for lunch yesterday and she mentioned that she was an actress and suggested that I check her out on IMDB, which I did... turns out she did a large speaking role in a film with Vera Farmiga that is available for streaming, so I think I'll be watching that too.

Boot Camp - about a tough love camp for troubled teens. has Mila Kunis. has that russian guy from prison break who's accent changes every scene. has Mila Kunis. pleasantly surprised (expected a 2/10, this is maybe a 4.5/10.) it was smart enough to raise a couple interesting questions about such camps, but nowhere near smart enough to answer them. has Mila Kunis.

DEAD SNOW

A group of Norwegian friends get the scariest history lesson of their lives during a weekend getaway to the snowy town of Øksfjord, where the party is interrupted by throngs of Nazi zombies who once occupied the area. Armed with a machine-gun-equipped snowmobile, the gang fights for survival in director Tommy Wirkola's quirky horror, shot on location in the mountains of Norway. The film had its U.S. premiere at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival.

this is not a video game thread and I object to it always being in the top of new answers fwiw

antexit, Wednesday, 17 March 2010 14:47 (fourteen years ago) link

it's here since every this-gen game system has the added bonus of offering netflix streaming and because most folks I know use their systems as movie boxes about 40-60% of the times they use them.
Anyone else against this thread being here? We can move it to ILE if there's enough unhappiness about it.

forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 17 March 2010 14:54 (fourteen years ago) link

A question, not a recommendation: is there a site with a film title database which lays out current streaming options for each film? That would be a really handy site.

four months pass...

How to Survive a Plague just got added.

On a lighter note:

...beginning on March 30 the streaming service lands all past seasons of Cartoon Network‘s Adventure Time, Ben 10, Regular Show, and Johnny Bravo, as well as Warner Bros Animation’s Green Lantern. It also will have Adult Swim shows Robot Chicken and Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Sony Pictures Television’s The Boondocks and Warner Bros Television’s Studio 2.0′s Childrens Hospital.

Watching Roy Orbison: Black & White Night before it expires. Lots of musical guest stars in the band that maybe you can take or leave but more importantly he's got Elvis's Vegas-era backing band.
