Netflix Streaming Film Recommendations: Because You Can't Always Play With Yourself

I should ruin my childhood and see if any of the terrible shows I loved as a youngster are available (Manimal, Automan, Misfits of Science)

i will also rep for severance, which is prob my favorite horror-comedy of the last decade. NOTE: there is a reason horror is the first thing in that description, this is not shaun of the dead type fare, NOT FOR KIDS or peeps that arent down with some fairly gruesome moments

I watched Revanche the other day due to a friend's recommendation. Wasn't particularly impressed with it. I appreciate the unadorned quietness of it, but it seems the film desperately hopes this GRAVITAS will cover up the fact that the story's kind of fucking dumb and unconvincing. Also the back end of the film's pretty much "well this thing's just writing itself!" kind of predictable. Wasn't diggin' it.

heard bad things about severance but then saw a trailer and I was like this looks goofy and a little creepy and okay

love the IT crowd!

+1 for Primer (great mindfuck/puzzle movie, totally underlooked despite winning Sundance that year!) and TimeCrimes (how many good horror/time travel movies have you seen?). Severance was fun, too.

I really liked IT Crowd but it's kind of a grower and you need to accept that cheesy laugh track/live audience humor of ye olde sitcom mixed with lots of internet/geek references, down to the very densely packed set. I was amused that for one of the characters is always reading Love and Rockets throughout the show, though it's never mentioned explicitly.

I've been trying to get through Party Down, if for the sheer fact they seemed to employ everybody who was ever on Veronica Mars, but it feels like a slower, badly directed Curb Your Enthusiasm-type show. Good acting, though.

Enjoyed Jekyll, too. Oh, and Dexter's on streaming, too!

Encounters at the End of the World - brilliant Herzog doc
Mitchell and Webb Look: Ssn 1 - nonstop fun, y'all britishers need to let these guys come to america
Humpday - really pleasantly surprised; this is a pretty damn good film!
Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog - worth a peek and short
Mongol - not much of a plot, but sumptuous visuals in HD
Two Days in April - the story of five players entering the NFL Draft
Pucker Up - whistling documentary
Second Skin - kinda fair to middling MMORPG doc, occasionally dumb as hell
Masters of Horror: Joe Dante: Homecoming - consistently dumb as hell but funny
Love is the Devil - really really good biopic about Francis Bacon with Derek Jacobi and 007
Knife in the Water - great intro to Polanski, go watch this IMMEDIATELY if you haven't already... i think this was my fourth viewing
Baghead - kinda okay comedy/horror/buddy films
Tyson - amazing character study
Louis C.K.: Chewed Up - dude is a funny guy
Gomorrah - astonishing gangster film, crazy naturalistic and immersive
The Shield Around the K - label doc
Follow That Bird - good for nostalgia and larfs and cameos
The Order of Myths - mixed feelings but worth watching doc about Mobile's Mardi Gras from black/white community perspectives

The Perfect Witness (serial killer thriller but not in any way that you would expect)

Cool shit I've watched recently:

Branded to Kill: off the wall 60's Yakuza pop-noir type thing. kind of incomprehensible at times, but very stylish and fun. first Suzuki film i've seen. Tokyo Drifter is also on demand. will look into that.

Planet of the Apes: first time seeing it. much better than i had anticipated, though the the "twist" if you can call it that dawns on the viewer much earlier than it does to Heston's character. also, this film kind of runs off of frustrating the audience most of the time which is kind of funny.

Antichrist: i don't know. i'm kind of a sucker for this arthouse horror stuff. Von Trier nakedly grappling (uh, no pun) with his themes here. absolutely stunning to look at. feels like it's going to be some sort of classic down the line. well, in the way something like IRREVERSIBLE is a classic i guess.

Virgin Spring: knowing Bergman and the Last House on the Left, this was kind of exactly what i expected it to be. very much tied to its story and less of Bergman directly gettin' all existential. though there is at least one short, anguished GOD'S SILENCE monologue. not his best or most interesting, but a solid Bergmanized version of the tale.

Tarkovsky's Solaris: second time seeing this. really love it. beautiful and devastating, not as dull as i remember. the extended driving sequence near the beginning is a favorite. so eery and hypnotic. this is a movie that i should own.

Playtime: took me a while to get into this, but once i did it was a blast. apt title, the entire thing's essentially a game. spot the gag. seems like something you could watch a dozen times and consistently catch something new. the restaurant segment is fucking all time. i read there's a nice 70mm (what else, i guess) print of this coming around here sometime soon. will go.

The Vanishing: really excellent, Dutch Hitchock-esque "thriller". thoroughly engrossing with a strong, sad emotional drive. not entirely sold on the ending, but i don't think it diminishes the film.

Wendy and Lucy: kind of avoided this for a while due to its LOLindie appearance. that was a mistake. this is a really beautiful, quiet, heartbreaking little film. oddly haunting. watched it twice in two days. i dug Old Joy, but i enjoyed this even more. will be following this Kelly Reichardt.

Duck Soup: i'd seen some of this in film class, but this was my first time all the way through. totally loved it. some genuinely cutting, ballsy satire in this thing. and what a brilliant ending! prompted me to throw a bunch of Marx bros. stuff in my queue.

Pierrot Le Fou: i've seen plenty of Godard, but this was probably his most thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining. would probably be the film i'd recommend to people who are looking for a way into his work.

Encounters at the End of the World: wonderful, top-tier Herzog doc imo. alternately hysterical and poignant. i saw this a little stoned, so that might have influenced my opinion. i want to see it again.

i will also def second Dr. Horrible, although i didnt know it was streaming available (Dan if you have not seen this you really should pretty much immediately)

Shield Around the K was alright, did not like homecoming at all.

Mitchell and Webb look is great but the repeat sketches start to get painfully samey

if The Signal is still available i thought that was awesome too.

You'd be hard pressed to have a more fun weekend that that.

Yeah, over the last 4 of 5 months Criterion has suddenly been putting tons and tons of stuff on, it's awesome.

Gotta agree about Ichi/Antichrist not exactly being kosher recs, lol. I had to turn off Ichi after 15 minutes!

But I'm the kind of guy who would tell you to watch The Boss of It All instead.

another one if you dig docs, The Rape of Europa, which is about people attempting to reclaim their families artwork from museums after it was stolen by the nazis - one of the best docs ive seen in the last few years

oh and one more and then i'll stop babbling here, all the seasons of Wire In the Blood are up there, and it is by far my most loved tv show that no one else cares about at all (really more of a sequential movie-length thing about a psychologist working on super weird murder cases, its absolutely brilliantly written, acted and shot.)

I have watched both Cocaine Cowboys documentaries roughly 1243796386987162387465192634 times each since they became streamable. also the IT Crowd is very much not the best show but I've watched every streaming episode at least twice so w/e.

Playtime is an amazing movie but is really one of those movies you should see in the highest quality possible (ie not streaming digitally) - there's so much stuff going on that you really need to be able to see it.

I tried to watch Wire in the Blood and thought it was pretty bad, sorry.

I feel like even the HD streaming stuff isn't really the same quality as even a regular DVD. I'm not really snobby about this usually, I just think it's important for Playtime. Really though, the theater is the best place to see Playtime, if possible.

one of the best moviegoing experiences I ever had in my life was when I went to go see the 70mm print of Playtime at the Egyptian Theater a couple of years ago. plus it was the English dub, which I would ordinarily find offensively shitty but w/ Playtime it was incredibly liberating being able to let my eyes wander all over all that screen space picking out details. oh, and for some reason there were a bunch of kids in the theater too and it TOTALLY worked; they went into the same shell-shocked awe that all the wine-sipping turtleneck-wearing cineastes as soon as it started. A++++++++++++++++ would see again.

senna was good, but im not that knowledgeable about f1. loved the 80s footage of ppl driving smooth lines through the tracks and then seeing senna going round with the car skittering everywhere because he could get THAT close to completely out of control.

the 84 sequence when he went from waay back to second in the rain was great.

xp i agree abt senna, also know v little abt formula 1, but there is SO MUCH great footage & he himself seems actually humble & likeable & makes the ensuing, known end that much more impactful/dramatic/classically tragic that i sorta feel like the doc is such a slam dunk, im more thankful it wasnt somehow horribly f'd up than thinking it is partic amazing

Watching Roy Orbison: Black & White Night before it expires. Lots of musical guest stars in the band that maybe you can take or leave but more importantly he's got Elvis's Vegas-era backing band.

Also does some material by the other Elvis, which wasn't too bad actually.
