heart of darkness
― rahni, Tuesday, 9 March 2010 03:33 (fourteen years ago) link
I'm gonna take this CD with me in the car tomorrow and think about this a bit, but at the moment I'm torn between "Cow" and "Weird Sisters" and "Someday" and "Most Beautiful Widow In Town."

someday was one of the most unlikely hit radio singles. i actually got kind of sick of it at the time, but now I love it.
― akm, Tuesday, 9 March 2010 04:03 (fourteen years ago) link
heart of darkness i think? but i really need to listen to this again

Hammering the Cramps
― nate woolls, Tuesday, 9 March 2010 08:48 (fourteen years ago) link
First reaction was "Someday I Will Treat You Good" but thinking maybe I shd pick something slightly more representative of the album as a whole since I love pretty much all of these

Really tough one here. I went for 'Spirit Ditch' as it's just absolutely lovely. Although I could have quite as easily picked 'Homecoming Queen', 'Heart of Darkness' or 'Sad & Beautiful World'. 'Someday' is an outstanding rocker (I've always loved the guitar solo) but I tend to be more inclined towards the sad, slow, melancholy side of Sparklehorse.
― AnotherDeadHero, Tuesday, 9 March 2010 10:27 (fourteen years ago) link
well it's obviously either hammering the cramps or someday
going with latter; having heard the album even without knowing it was the big hit single it stood out miles and became a slight obsession
cow/sad & beautiful world are also superb

Without having listened in a couple of years I want to go with "Cow" - will listen again and report back though.
― Tim F, Tuesday, 9 March 2010 10:51 (fourteen years ago) link
the way that 'cow' just keeps going and going even when it should end and then keeps going a little longer and then battles through the fading instrumentation to keep going...awesome
one of the better bluegrass feedback wig-outs

Yeah, it and "Saturday" were among the first tunes that forced my tender 14 yr old brain to acknowledge the value of repetition + repetition + repetition.
― Tim F, Tuesday, 9 March 2010 11:06 (fourteen years ago) link
needs a proper eurohouse remix tbh

(but yeah, the 3 Rs...it's taken me AGES to catch up but songs like this certainly help. along with the fall. and krautrock. and the boredoms.)

Went for Saturday without thinking twice, just plain gorgeous.
― Maraca Son Sistema (Matt DC), Tuesday, 9 March 2010 12:15 (fourteen years ago) link
Def. still "Cow". "Saturday" might have clinched it if it was longer. "Tears On Fresh Fruit", "The Most Beautiful Widow In Town" and "Heart of Darkness" would have been my alts I think.
Need to listen to Good Morning Spider as, though I remember preferring that album, I have no sense of what in particular I loved most on it.

'Someday' is classic.

cow ftw. i just moved out of a place that had a bird in the garden that sounded like that running, unspooled mechanical swirl at the end of the song, it made me think of it all the time. pretty girl/milking a cow/oh yeah

I've always meant to explore his stuff more deeply, but I'd feel like kind of a dick to start now.

one of the first things that stuck out to me during the period when this cd was constantly in my car was that i'd always skip the odd tracks for the even tracks. i think i just prefer the rawkier stuff to the gentler stuff.

just saw thomas white play live - fucking ended with 'someday i will treat you good' - awesome

Surprising results for me. Thought 'Spirit Ditch' and 'Sad and Beautiful World' wouldv'e ranked higher.

love how "rainmaker" references "spirit ditch"
― iiiijjjj, Saturday, 22 May 2010 00:52 (thirteen years ago) link
Rainmaker & Hammering the Cramps are my favorites, but the whole thing flows very nicely. Good solid recording.
― ImprovSpirit, Monday, 24 May 2010 01:49 (thirteen years ago) link
Was just thinking this needed to be polled and here it is. The answer is Cow, but Rainmaker getting 1 vote is plain wrong so maybe that.

Agreed on "Cow". Something irked Mark when he/they played in Seattle on the GMS tour and they skipped the "Cow" encore which was on the setlist I snagged. Sad face!

It had one via Plain but consensus is that label is bad at sound quality and that version is now also out of print anyway...
