DUDES

I AM SOOO EXCITED!!!

Just got word that we are gonna open a show for Lupe Fiasco and B.O.B. in a small arena!!!!

this is gonna by far be the biggest show i ever played in my music "career"

Deuce Bigalow: Male Juggalo (M@tt He1ges0n), Tuesday, 9 March 2010 17:11 (fourteen years ago) link

oh word? that's cool. what's your group?

get lupe to do some joints off of the revenge of the nerds tape imo

zvookster, Tuesday, 9 March 2010 17:17 (fourteen years ago) link

zvook - i'm not really "in" it, but i play bass and currently am in the backing band of Unknown Prophets....they've been around for a long time in Minneapolis, kinda came up with Atmosphere, Bro Ali, Musab, Abstract Pack 90s Twin Cities underground/backpacker circles

(i'm not on the records just play shows with them)

Deuce Bigalow: Male Juggalo (M@tt He1ges0n), Tuesday, 9 March 2010 17:32 (fourteen years ago) link

sounds liek it's gonna be fun

listen to some of my favorites from that tape in celebration

Wait, the unknown prophets with Keith Knight?

forksclovetofu, Tuesday, 9 March 2010 17:47 (fourteen years ago) link

forks - i don't think so? who is keith knight? no one by that name in it now...

their first album is considered kinda classic early mpls underground in some circles...their most famous song is "Never" with Slug...first album also had an early appearance by Brother Ali

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2GCt3yjYeas

anyway they sound a lot different than this now, lots more live instrumentation and whatnot which is why they have a backing band live...

Deuce Bigalow: Male Juggalo (M@tt He1ges0n), Tuesday, 9 March 2010 18:12 (fourteen years ago) link

oh, my bad; he's with the marginal prophets.
Congrats Matt!

forksclovetofu, Tuesday, 9 March 2010 18:17 (fourteen years ago) link

both lupe albums have 4 songs that are stone cold dope & the rest are pretentious bullshit

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 9 March 2010 19:12 (fourteen years ago) link

1st Lupe album can lick my ballsack (except for "Kick Push" - alltime classic obv) 2nd is mostly pretty good

flocka flamingos (The Reverend), Tuesday, 9 March 2010 19:16 (fourteen years ago) link

these are the fiasco joints i kept on my ipod

go go gadget flow
superstar
paris, tokyo
hi-definition

hip-hop saved my life (easily best lupe song after "kick push")
dumb it down (cloying, but i like it)
kick push
i gotcha
daydream
hurt me soul

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 9 March 2010 19:19 (fourteen years ago) link

and by ipod i mean itunes since i don't actually own an ipod

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 9 March 2010 19:19 (fourteen years ago) link

i don't listen to the albums tbh. too saccharine, too wimpy, too cynical in their pandering, plus like u say he comes off kind of annoying. "kick push" is ok if yr in the mood, but the only track i really play at all is "steady mobbin'" (or "ghetto story") from the leaked version of the debut which is both dope & pretentious on a socially conscious tip (also quite saccharine, with the strings going).

the tapes are cynical too but he's much better throwaway on stolen beats & he's targeting a rapnerd demograf, or striking tough poses like on "Lupe the Killer", or how he's he's "sittin' sideways" on "Clean" with disclaimers for gangsta reportage. so these are pre-debut exercises just like he flips between gangster & teacher on "Switch". kind of interesting. thx 4 the album tracks u like since they could get rescued from sitting around dusty taking up hard disk space. (tho iirc i find daydreamin, superstar, paris, tokyo all just ok)

zvookster, Tuesday, 9 March 2010 19:47 (fourteen years ago) link

ive never heard his tapes, not totally interested at this point i guess :-/

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 9 March 2010 19:49 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah i guess u kinda had to be there maybe? or maybe they're wack either way. but it was exciting to me, & i still love the tracks youtubed above and others, and check for his tapes, even if just for a listen. that most recent one has a track where i think he emulates a gucci flow :P

zvookster, Tuesday, 9 March 2010 20:04 (fourteen years ago) link

"Gold Watch" is totally dope

T.I. does go in, but the beat is on some budget The Runners-meet-Toomp-meets-Drumma Boy production shit. I mean, it's not bad, I just don't know if it has enough kick, enough oomph, to it. It's like a Jeezy beat without the menace or backbone.
