first mafia was a big disappointment.

I really enjoyed it, apart from the long driving between missions thing where you had to drive like a Sunday afternoon grandad. I played the PC version - I think a lot was cut for the console ports.

the gaming world has spoken

chicago, but two versions: in the 20s and today, and you play back and forth between a dude and his grandfather

I've often thought a chicago prohibition era GTA was inevitable

i am under no illusions that my opinions are even that interesting to me (dan m), Wednesday, 10 March 2010 01:27 (fourteen years ago) link

now we know. i still think dubai could have been pretty cool

I think I said on another thread that a Godfather II-type narrative for a GTA game would be really cool too; same city, two eras, with one's era's action impacting on another's.

first mafia was awesome, can't wait for the sequel but hope it isn't dogshit like the godfather sequel.

onimo, you might like saboteur. playing it heavily at the moment - very similar to mafia & gta. set in ww2 fighting nazis, missions open world etc. great use of colour and atmosphere but seriously awful voice acting (up there with orson welles in the alltime worst irish accents)

six years pass...

So I'm currently replaying Vice City, this time on PC. This game is fun, and I really enjoy the side stuff I don't care what people say.

Gripe with the pc version though is that the computer traffic vanishes horribly if you turn and look away. It did this from time to time on the ps2 as well but it's seriously bad on pc.

Something occurred to me, regarding exploring and looking around for secret missions/items, this game is a perfect size!
GTA5 is too big, and anything of any use is located miles away from anywhere. I got seriously bored hunting around for paper scraps, ufo pieces, monkey mozaics, and peyote plants. Everything in VC feels like a walkable (runnable?) distance away too.

Maybe I'm just getting old.

I can't imagine Rockstar would even consider making another gta based on a smaller map and more condensed with activity though. Perhaps somebody else could.

I agree. There's a charm to the smaller maps of the old games that's missing from 4 and 5. I've been playing those later games forever and still have little sense of the geography.

Loved VC. Sad that the Xbox version doesn't quite work on XBOX360 - buttons don't seem to match too great, or it runs too quickly, or I am just nowhere near as good at videogames as I was when it came out.

Yeah, like, the ability to swim in later games is cool and all until someone explodes your plane over the ocean and you have to spend ten minutes swimming back to shore.

I just recently started replaying VC, too, to see if there's any cool shit after the RC copter mission where I gave up before.

I'm finding it a lot easier on pc, now I have the control pad fixed, than ps2 (which I also recently attempted).

This could be down to the fact my ps2 left analogue stick seems to have ultra-high sensitivity.

And I know it's tiresome to hear this but good god the radio stations are amazing.

For instance I nailed all of those RC missions on PC. Compared to my recent attempt on ps2 where I couldn't get anywhere.

Having said that I must have attempted 'Messing with the man' about 30 times on the pc before I got it. Could have sworn I beat this by getting up on the opposite roof and just shooting everything with a rocket laucher. But on PC nothing was spawning from that distance.

def not tiresome - murdering someone as john waite's missing you played on the stereo was one of my greatest gaming experiences

Agreed. For me the song of choice was "automatic" by the Pointer Sisters
