I bought all this stuff the other day, too. I'll post here as I take better pics. These sort of remind me of synth presets - like... they'll soon be instantly recognizable as we start seeing them on Flickr, blogs, etc, but they are pretty damn fun and way better than the standard pixelated iPhone camera. Since I take my iPhone everywhere, I am way more likely to capture interesting stuff than on my nice Canon. If the next iPhone has a high pixel camera, I will definitely upgrade it. Toy Camera and Polarize are pretty cool apps, too. Hipstamatic makes the most mundane subject matter look kind of awesome.

yeah hipstamatic kind of gets it 'right'...waiting for a >5mp camera. keep on thinking that the iPad comes with a 5MP camera, but I guess steve jobs said SUCK IT .

but the new high quality option is pretty dope... 2.25 MP pix are enough to print little 3x3 or 4x4 prints or whatever, I think

takes a long fucking time though, even on a 3GS. would be dope if you could take regular pictures and process them later.

Yeah, it takes a while to develop the hi res ones on my 3G, but some of the bitching about it in reviews has me wondering what settings they are using... it's not that bad for me. seems to take a lot longer with a flash, I guess.

is this high-res option part of one of hipstamatic's $ packs?

the hi rez option is in the hipstamatic section of your iPhone settings. it became available with the 1.50 patch that just released a few days ago.

am0n, yeah you can do this stuff with Photoshop (if you're rich or can find a virus-free copy on torrent or w/e), but for me this and other camera apps are just fun replacements for the crappy iPhone cam - which I bring everywhere (unlike my much nicer Canon, which currently has a layer of dust on it).

I don't want to front on Holgas/Lomos/etc. because I've taken some photographs I'm proud of with them (I did a series back in the day from inside mosh pits, using a Holga and direct flash - I wasn't about to risk my only real film camera then), but the aesthetic is easy pickings at this point.

the main reason I like hipstamatic is that it's not going to cost a mint to develop that roll of 120 film or w/e

It highlights how important processing is.

Just about every photo in history would look boring if printed straight, and digital images are the worst about this (as, usually, you see them in RAW format without any adjustments by camera or computer and there's no unique characteristics, where films had certain qualities that were inherent to their construction).

I have a Lightroom preset that I use to apply a mildly strong S-Curve to everything - sometimes it's too much and I can dial down after looking at them more closely, but for most images (particularly shot indoors or in Texas's flat light), I have to dial it up a bit more. I've gotten into the habit of applying a light vignette to a lot of images as well.

yeah it's kinda funny, a lot of photographers always harp about getting 'verisimilitude' and colors which are as close as possible to the real thing, when really people want exaggerated contrasty shots that 'pop' and could not care less about accurate color

Not just exaggerated contrast or color (I'm looking at you, Velvia)... Playing with curves (either an s-curve or whatever suits your image) generally creates separation in the midtones of an image, which is what they're primarily made of.

To go film nerdy, this was a sticking point when makers introduced modern black and white films (Tmax, Delta) vs. old-style (Tri-X, HP5, etc.) - the latter traditionally had a long s-curve with standard development, images had a certain depth to them. Modern films were flatter, and had to be printed with greater contrast in the enlarger (which is more of a compromise, as contrast is determined in most enlargers by another object placed between negative and paper).

What hipstamatic is doing up there doesn't necessarily have much to do with toy cameras (which were as much about the softness of plastic lenses, light leaks, chance, yada yada yada). It changes the color balance (cooler), hue (greener - sort of like expired films), applies some kind of curve to give the midtones depth, and adds vignette (which emphasizes the center of the image, which is where most of us naturally place our subject).

Big fan of this thing. I don't dig the frame effects so much except for the plain ones. Anything else seems to be exclusively vintage-y and rustic instead of just playing with the processing of the photo, which is the most interesting part to me. Thanks Milo, for you post, made me download it.

the frames are the deadest giveaway. if i could give feedback to the author, i would ask for a frameless option and the ability to simulate double exposures

I guess you can't run Hipstamatic after the fact? Would be a lot easier to just use the iPhone camera and let Hipstamatic do its thing later.

lols at the lens being the determinant factor for the image color, btw. The overly-yellow and overly-red ones are terrible anyway

after using this for a while I actually tried taking a few 'art effects' shot on my e-p1 and was disappointed by how plain and pedestrian they seemed

There used to be some good 'Holga' actions for Photoshop - they were processor and memory intensive, because they randomized a series of layers over your image, which was cool. That was the closest thing to the 'toy cam experience' via processing.

There's a product that mounts to interchangeable lens digital cameras that basically consists of a lens mount, flexible tube, a single-element lens and drop-in apertures. Can't remember what it was called, though.

anyone got advice on buying expired 135 film? i want a fuzzy, degraded effect, but i want a certain degree of clarity. how old is just right? 10 years? 20? what old brands/specs are the best for this sort of thing. i am prepared to be dissapointed and expect getting back fogged/blank pics... but it seems like a fun experiment.

Slide film is the most likely to have issues (desired or undesired) with processing and exposure due to age.

Other than that, it's a bit of a crapshoot. Film stored in a hot environment is going to degrade much faster than film stored in a fridge or freezer, etc..

I shot some 20 year expired tri-x recently. ime it was much grainier, and had lost some film speed (i.e. you should overexpose it).

some fuji color film that had expired just a few years ago seemed a little washed out and there might have been some color shifting.

Most of the film I shoot with is expired - it was scoring a bunch of past-developing-date 120/135 C41/E6 rolls on Freecycle a few years ago that got me back into it.

Can't say I've noticed any obvious defects with the 2004-05 slide films but this 1994-vintage 120-format TMax is obviously fairly degraded:

People were just as guilty of this using film (Lomos, Holgas, etc.), but at least there was a little bit of blood, sweat and tears involved.

And you know what it all means? It means every picture and every video looks the same.

two changes I would love for Instagram to make: make Instagram files the same size (cropped to square, natch) as native iPhone photos, so they can be printed larger than 2.25x2.25, and that they make the borders independent of the 'styles' used
