"Giant Steps," easy. One of my all time favorites, though I'm not really into the rest of the album.

are there other examples of alt-rock bands brazenly borrowing jazz album titles? There's "This Is Our Music" by Galaxie 500 ... one more and it was a trend!

btw what band did an album called Giant Steps?

Syeeda's Song Flute. then Spiral, then title track

Naima edges out the title track for me.

i don't know if any of the many albums titled Something Else or Somethin' Else is an homage to Ornette Coleman or Cannonball Adderly

title track. mike brecker doing naima solo on "directions in music" is the best naima.

can't decide between naima and syeeda

there are definitely a ton of great versions of "Naima," befitting its status as a standard, but let's not overlook the fact that the version on this album is pretty much perfect and the foundation all others were built on
― waka yoga flame (some dude), Tuesday, 2 March 2010 18:40 (fourteen years ago) link
but giant steps, countdown, and every other song is dope too.
xp

Should be noted that some people have pointed out that a similar idea to the "Giant Steps" chord progression was used by Duke Ellington in "Blue Rose," which is the title cut of an album Duke did with Rosemary Clooney.

decided to go for the underdog and vote for "Syeeda's Song Flute," which feels like the most playful song on the album to me but also has so many amazing things going on in it

naima naima naima
tho prob colored by other versions just as EZ admits above, including, in fact, especially, the Live at the Village Vanguard Again! version which was a big cut for a certain circle of mine of a certain time.

^^^yeah, that version's epic!
Title cut and "Naima" are kinda too obvious, so I'm gonna go with "Spiral", just 'cause I like that downward-spiralling melody. (Hm, just now noticing how every title is either musically self-descriptive or named after a relative/bandmate.)

Not in my Top 10 Coltrane albums, but a very good album. Voted Naima.

wow, never saw these results, surprisingly good showing for "Syeeda"!

yeah, i love that song ... this poll had me pull out the Atlantic Recordings box. Even though I listen more to the Impulse years, there is a ridiculous amount of great music on there. The only dud I think is the session he did with Ornette's band -- a good idea, but it sounds off for some reason.

there's a reason obvious shit is obvious

Assume you know the story about Paul Erdős, or maybe if was Halmos, probably the former.

Countdown is just long solo, iirc. Was this the first time he did this?

I listen to this album a lot now. I listened to it the other day. Not sure what I'd vote for. Spiral maybe?
