yeah same here...i put the CD in my car last week to listen to it for the first time in a while but haven't put it on yet.

one day i'll listen to this. did martin carr name his album after this?

that's what i've always read, and it's said in wikipedia so it must be so

"Naima" without thinking.

"Mr. PC" without thinking.

To be honest I have a hard time separating this version of "Naima" from the later live ones with Dolphy. I probably listen to boots from the expanded quartet more than any canonical 'Trane and they make the song transcendent.

Album is pretty solid throughout, isn't it? "Naima" is incredible -- though I agree with EZ, the versions w/ Dolphy might be better. Love "Syeeda's Song Flute," too ... Hmmm!

"Giant Steps," easy. One of my all time favorites, though I'm not really into the rest of the album.

i don't know if any of the many albums titled Something Else or Somethin' Else is an homage to Ornette Coleman or Cannonball Adderly

there are definitely a ton of great versions of "Naima," befitting its status as a standard, but let's not overlook the fact that the version on this album is pretty much perfect and the foundation all others were built on

but giant steps, countdown, and every other song is dope too.

Should be noted that some people have pointed out that a similar idea to the "Giant Steps" chord progression was used by Duke Ellington in "Blue Rose," which is the title cut of an album Duke did with Rosemary Clooney.

tho prob colored by other versions just as EZ admits above, including, in fact, especially, the Live at the Village Vanguard Again! version which was a big cut for a certain circle of mine of a certain time.

Title cut and "Naima" are kinda too obvious, so I'm gonna go with "Spiral", just 'cause I like that downward-spiralling melody. (Hm, just now noticing how every title is either musically self-descriptive or named after a relative/bandmate.)

yeah, i love that song ... this poll had me pull out the Atlantic Recordings box. Even though I listen more to the Impulse years, there is a ridiculous amount of great music on there. The only dud I think is the session he did with Ornette's band -- a good idea, but it sounds off for some reason.
