two of the liquorballs were there when i was in SF for the antiquarian bookshow at the end of febuary when i stayed at that hipster hellhole the Jupiter in the tenderloin. i never want to see fat fucking hipsters jumping naked into a swimming pool at night again.

other great bands on blackjack:

coffee

icky boyfriends

brainbombs

etc

does that make you want to touch yourself? (nordicskilla), Thursday, 7 April 2005 16:45 (nineteen years ago) link

bizzarre

I've gone on dates with gygax, he's like a Victorian gentleman, putting his jacket over puddles and shit like that.

does that make you want to touch yourself? (nordicskilla), Thursday, 7 April 2005 16:46 (nineteen years ago) link

he insisted on paying for my cab back and open doors for me and carried me on his back through the mission sherpa style.

menlo park recordings should be reissuing all of the icky boyfriends this month or next. i would think you would be able to find their stuff used around the bay. originally they had some singles and one album plus the amazing movie I'M Not Fascinating.

jack cole (jackcole), Thursday, 7 April 2005 16:52 (nineteen years ago) link

oh yeah. blackjack put out a bunnybrains album too -- Bunny Magick with a great Todd Scherr cover with a two head bunny, one of which wears a fez.

jack cole (jackcole), Thursday, 7 April 2005 16:53 (nineteen years ago) link

I liked the first two Monoshock singles (plus a demo tape I had) more than the album. Still haven't heard the CD comp.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 7 April 2005 17:24 (nineteen years ago) link

Monoshock. Liquorball.

Not on slsk, not on CD.

---- (nordicskilla), Monday, 11 April 2005 21:15 (nineteen years ago) link

I do not have gramophone

---- (nordicskilla), Monday, 11 April 2005 21:15 (nineteen years ago) link

"not on CD"

not true.

Surely the singles comp on S-S is still in print. Used CD copies of their old album can't be too hard to come by online, are they?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 11 April 2005 21:33 (nineteen years ago) link

Monoshock, no. Liquorball, yes.

---- (nordicskilla), Monday, 11 April 2005 21:37 (nineteen years ago) link

Not on SLSK nor CD!?!?!?!?!

SACRE BLEU!

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 11 April 2005 21:39 (nineteen years ago) link

OH MY GAWD!

(ALL MONOSHOCK ON CD, NO LIQUORBALL ON CD)

MY COMPUTER IS FUCKED.

TERRIBLE BACKGROUND NOISE FROM INPUT OR SOMETHING WHEN I TRY TO RECORD VINYL.

I AM SCREWED.

jack cole (jackcole), Monday, 11 April 2005 21:41 (nineteen years ago) link

Not on SLSK nor CD!?!?!?!?!

SACRE BLEU!

Buy me a gramophone, grandpa.

Not sure about Monoshock.

Samuel Glickstein (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 17:50 (nineteen years ago) link

I already have Comets On Fire and Mudhoney records!

I clicked on the link, looked at the site for a few minutes, still no idea what it is.

Nothing is straightforward with you, is it?

Samuel Glickstein (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 18:03 (nineteen years ago) link

those mp3's double as a review of the entire works of Comets On Fire

milton parker (Jon L), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 18:12 (nineteen years ago) link

Monoshock >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Comets on Fire

Mudhoney is great though. I don't think that Monoshock and Mudhoney are TOO similar though.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 20:32 (nineteen years ago) link

I expected it to be a bit more...prog?

European Samuel Glickstein (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 20:49 (nineteen years ago) link

Nah, more "out" than prog.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 20:52 (nineteen years ago) link

I don't know what "out" means, in this context. It sounds like a section in a wanky record store.

European Samuel Glickstein (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 20:55 (nineteen years ago) link

It's an early 90s Oakland thing, you wouldn't understand.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 20:58 (nineteen years ago) link

Did I get the wrong CD? I got Runnin' Ape-like...

xp EAT ONE ENGLAND

European Samuel Glickstein (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 20:58 (nineteen years ago) link

if you don't like that one, I wouldn't sweat further research. But before you sell it back, listen to it once really loud driving a truck down ocean beach with a huge bottle of ether.

I do like the record but every time I play it, it keys into memories of just how fucked up they were live, so gygax may be right about 'had to be there'

Though by any standard Comets On Fire are a travesty

milton parker (Jon L), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 21:12 (nineteen years ago) link

I like Comets On Fire!

European Samuel Glickstein (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 21:32 (nineteen years ago) link

(bites into apple, four teeth break out. short pause, eye falls out, rolls down cheek)

milton parker (Jon L), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 21:41 (nineteen years ago) link

(soundtrack: Swing Out Sister)

Comets On Fire are ok, everything's ok

milton parker (Jon L), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 21:43 (nineteen years ago) link

"Soledad" is a GREAT song.

oh no milton, don't fall apart!

European Samuel Glickstein (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 21:45 (nineteen years ago) link

my teeth are dancing on the apple and it's all your fault for liking Comets on Fire

milton parker (Jon L), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 22:01 (nineteen years ago) link

there must be an easier way to feel old

milton parker (Jon L), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 22:08 (nineteen years ago) link

sagan-salute

Runnin' Apelike is a compilation so it's a bit all overs, but if you just go straight to "Mexican Dentistry" and turn it up I bet you'll end up wishing you'd been in the room

one year passes...

Cardinal fuzz just reissued the compilation cd Runnin Ape From the backwards superman 1989-1995.
Which is really lo fi and energetic and things.Starts off sounding like an Ozzie Stooge punk band and passes through sounding like Dead C.
Gosh quite exhilarating.
