Schmidt's got a HR this year! And it was a bent-arm dinger too!

Marichal could hit catchers pretty well.

Mr. Tony Plow (Leee), Thursday, 12 August 2004 19:49 (nineteen years ago) link

Schmidt hit a grand salami in spring training.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 12 August 2004 20:01 (nineteen years ago) link

I believe Jeff Suppan is still 0 for 2004. Bob Forsch could hit back in the day.

eleven months pass...
for bnw:

- J. Marquis hit for M. Mulder
- J. Marquis singled to pitcher, S. Taguchi to third

John (jdahlem), Thursday, 11 August 2005 20:28 (eighteen years ago) link

HOW DARE YOU QUESTION THE GLORY OF JASON MARQUIS WHO IS BATTING .344 ON THE SEASON, THE WHO WHO'S NEVER STRUCK OUT MORE THAN 250 TIMES IN HIS CAREER!!!

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 11 August 2005 20:37 (eighteen years ago) link

Does Dahlem hate me or was he referring to someone else xpost.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 11 August 2005 20:53 (eighteen years ago) link

he's referring to la russa!

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Thursday, 11 August 2005 21:05 (eighteen years ago) link

Oh right.

Because I am definitely not a genius, I have many posts on this board to prove it.

[no one but g is going to follow this but] placido polanco is and always has been a VERY GOOD player. ASSHOLE.

(and no poly i don't hate you tho la russa not infrequently gets on my nerves)

John (jdahlem), Friday, 12 August 2005 13:30 (eighteen years ago) link

Hey John, I realize that you were personally offended by me suggesting that THE KING FELIX HERNANDEZ striking out Placido Polanco is no big whoop*, but may I request that you curtail the personal insults, regardless of who it is on ILB that may have irked you?

Thank you!

The management.

*Jason Marquis: .344/.365/.525 = .890 OPS
Placido Polanco: .337/.404/.446 = .850 OPS (career year)

ok dude, that is what i call a blatant abuse of power. you cannot, as moderator, 'request' that i stop calling you an asshole and THEN proceed to do an asshole thing like that. that's just mean, and i won't stand for it. i won't.

John (jdahlem), Friday, 12 August 2005 15:55 (eighteen years ago) link

you've fallen into an ingeniously laid trap, dave! he's simultaneously disparaging polanco & making me look like a fool for calling out la russa and giving polanco props and as soon as you call him on his arg's fallacy he gets to come back with THIRTEEN INNINGS or something. what an ARGH!

John (jdahlem), Friday, 12 August 2005 16:00 (eighteen years ago) link

Glavine got 3 hits yesterday along with a tough loss and a decimated outfield.

Q: How important are good-hitting pitchers to the success of an offense in the N.L.?

A: Exactly as important as good-fitting underwear on a long drive.

Q: Billy Beane, G.M. for the Oakland A’s, has made sabermetric stats a major part of his “value” philosophy when building a baseball team. He’s frequently said that his method will build regular season winners but it doesn’t seem to work in the playoffs. Do you think that this is simply a result of a small sample size or the wrong statistics being used, or is it something more fundamental about “unmeasurable” statistics, like the ability to perform under pressure and “heart?”

A: Oh, I thought people had stopped asking that. Blast from the past there.

cankles, Saturday, 5 April 2008 13:19 (sixteen years ago) link

I think Greg Maddux has to be considered about the best all around pitcher of his generation, as beyond his pitching prowess, the guy is great with the glove and quite competent with the stick. He is one of those guys that seemed to actually take serious being able to lay a bunt down.

Alfonseca batted .667 in 2002 with the Cubs.:

Don Baylor managed to send Alfonseca to the plate with the bases loaded with two outs in the 9th inning of a slim 4-3 Cubs lead. In the bottom of the 8th inning, Baylor inexplicably double-switched in Augie Ojeda for Mark Bellhorn, the 6th batter due in the 9th inning instead of Delino DeShields, the 9th batter due. Of course, Alfonseca came up. Of course, Baylor was too stupid to realize that in a situation like that, you pinch hit, pray for a base hit, and get your best reliever still in the bullpen warmed up. Of course, Alfonseca looked like a complete jackass at the plate. Of course, he hit a weak ground ball which miraculously found the side of the first-base bag, kicked up over Lee Stevens’ head, and scored two runs.

Interesting!

Dontrelle Willis: +8.7 runs per season. Willis' hitting is strong enough that there’s a real transaction cost when he plays in the American League—there’s about a win's worth of value that simply isn’t going to be realized in a DH league.

mattbot, Thursday, 29 May 2008 17:20 (fifteen years ago) link

The absence of pitcher hitting stats is my least favorite part of leaguewide fantasy baseball. There are NL-only leagues for that reason I hope.

Where is there even a good, easy place to find pitcher hitting stats besides baseball-reference.com?

Jake Peavy: Wants to Stay in NL
RotoWire.com Staff - RotoWire.com

Peavy, who the Padres are open to trading, is likely unwilling to approve a trade to the American League, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Recommendation: Peavy’s agent said Peavy would like to stay in the N.L. because of his comfort level in the league and his productivity at the plate (he hit .265 last season). He also mentioned Peavy wanting to end up on a team with “a winning tradition” and in a city that fit “his and his family’s lifestyle.” Peavy still maintains that his first choice is to stay in San Diego, so all of this chatter may be for nothing, but the Padres are taking their due diligence by gauging his trade value. Peavy’s agent mentioned Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles and St. Louis as potential destinations.

His family's lifestyle. . .
