Raw Power is my pick, and it seems that I cannot elaborate much upon Fred's reasoning. In my experience, I've converted more of the unconverted via Raw Power than Funhouse (current score: 3 to 0,) and that kind of populist appeal probably counts for something.

ZOMBIE BIRDHOUSE is a bit on the patchy side, but worth owning if not only for "Run Like A Villain."

alex in nyc, Sunday, 29 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Raw Power, baby, raw raw raw. I can't really speak to the original release with the crap mix, but the reissue shows that Raw Power was the most rock and roll album ever made. I played it for someone yesterday, actually, and listened again through new ears, and it's still menacing, loud as hell, and it still even sounds more relevant than most of the material being released today. Is Fun House great? Yeah. If you ask me (and you did), Raw Power is even better.

Sean Carruthers, Sunday, 29 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

As a critic and an insufferable snob both, Funhouse is the only Stooges record I listen to. And it's glorious.

Tom, Monday, 30 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I'll say it again (needlessly)...song for song (and isn't that really the real test of an album?), FUNHOUSE is simply the better batch than RAW POWER. Don't get me wrong, RAW POWER still kicks a mighty big ass, but you've got to admit that there are some comparitively weak tracks there. FUNHOUSE is all muscle, no fat (not even "L.A. Blues").

alex in nyc, Monday, 30 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Rethink: I s'pose the true snobs' answer would be "the unreleased one." Featured songs "Cock in My Pocket," "Rubber Legs," "Open Up and Bleed," pre-KILL CITY "Johanna," etc. Most of it first appeared on French bootlegs in the 80s. I think Bomp gave 'em semi-official release five-odd years back. I once held "Open Up" as my fave Stooges track (based on about three radically different versions; one being on METALLIC K.O.), but it's 7-8 years since I've owned or heard any of it. Back to topic: I remember Thurston Moore answering this somewhere, something like RAW POWER is the musicians' favourite (esp. guitars in "Penetration"), FUNHOUSE everyone else's.

AP, Monday, 30 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I bought Raw Power first, was intruiged by it for a while, soon passed on to other things; then picked up Funhouse for some reason and was completely entranced for a couple of weeks. That says it all. Raw Power rocks quite well, but Funhouse is a far more satisfying album because it's somehow not about the riffs themselves. This is the album with the attitude, the debut is horribly pale and weak in comparison.

graham, Monday, 30 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Funhouse, can't beat one of the greatest rockalbums ever. Raw Power is pretty good though and arguably has the bigger anthems (Gimme Danger, Search & Destroy). Production of Raw Power never bothered me.

tipustiger, Saturday, 4 September 2004 02:43 (nineteen years ago) link

The original mix of Raw Power is an intriguing mystery! The bass is almost completely inaudible throughout and mostly what you hear of the drums is the snare. Was it some attempt to make a record like White Light/White Heat?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Saturday, 4 September 2004 03:41 (nineteen years ago) link

"Williamson just wanted to be in the rolling stones."

That's bullshit. I mean, yeah, the rhythm guitar at the beginning of "Search and Destroy" starts off sounding like "Street Fighting Man," but, like on all the other more revved-up tracks on the album, it ends up being WAY more relentless and yakkety. That was called "punk."

His leads strike me as being very Jimmy Page-like, actually. Matter of fact, now that I think of it, the influence on his rhythm playing seems to have been "Train Kept a-Rollin'"/"Communication Breakdown" (check "Shake Appeal," "Death Trip," maybe even "Raw Power").

Give the guy some fucking credit.

Bimble (bimble), Saturday, 4 September 2004 05:18 (nineteen years ago) link

Tim, I agree that JW's leads (probably rhythm tracks too) sound more metal/hard rock. But I also don't think they're done very well at all - he's no Page for sure. A lot of it really just sounds like bad hard rock to me, which is why it amazes me that anyone could rate Raw Power over Fun House. "Search and Destroy" is classic though.

I've never heard the Bowie mix.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 4 September 2004 08:44 (nineteen years ago) link

did nobody here get the remixed version of raw power that iggy redid himself? that beats fun house easily.

splooge (thesplooge), Saturday, 4 September 2004 08:58 (nineteen years ago) link

i've never heard the bowie mix either, but i think i'd probably prefer it to the iggy mix. i like most of the songs on that album (especially "shake appeal"), but it's almost impossible for me to listen to it all the way through at one sitting. it's just so goddamned MONOTONOUS, just one grindingly loud, snotty, straightforward tune after another. i think my distaste for it has a lot to do with the over-the-top remix - it's like being hit in the head with an iron for forty minutes! every one of those songs sounds awesome on a mixtape (well, except "penetration"), but put them all together and halfway through i'm reaching for the advil. whereas every song on funhouse sounds different (and like nothing else ever) and you can DANCE to it.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Saturday, 4 September 2004 09:24 (nineteen years ago) link

"it's like being hit in the head with an iron for forty minutes"

thats what makes it so damn great!

splooge (thesplooge), Saturday, 4 September 2004 09:28 (nineteen years ago) link

The Bowie mix had SWORDFIGHTING on it! It would've been good if they'd included both mixes on the one disc when they did the re-issue, since it's not really that long an album.

Personally I get different things out of all three, but if I HAD to choose... Fun House it is.

pete badmusik (pete badmusik), Sunday, 5 September 2004 00:53 (nineteen years ago) link

Fun House. Because Ron Asheton was a better guitarist than James Williamson (knew his way around a wah-wah.) Because Dave Alexander was a better bassist than Ron Asheton. Because Steven Mackay supplied the greatest tenor sax playing on any rock record EVER. Not to mention greatest LP cover, greatest scream ("TV Eye") and the fact that it was released in 1970 (greatest year in rock, LP-wise!)

Raw Power is pretty great too, altho neither Bowie's nor Iggy's mix was completely satisfactory.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Sunday, 5 September 2004 02:40 (nineteen years ago) link

i'm sad i got rid of my bowie-mix of raw power, it'd be nice to hear again.

it would be a tightass pointscoring thing to say that iggy's raw power rules not because there's BASS but because you can hear the GLOCKENSPIEL...but really it's because of the BASS. grunge rock lives!!

i think fun house is better.

g--ff (gcannon), Sunday, 5 September 2004 04:45 (nineteen years ago) link

Both great! But I would never play Funhouse at a party

Funhouse would be absolutely fine to play at a party, what are you talking about?

if you wanna know why Raw Power is pretty crap, just listen to the 10x better outtakes from those sessions like "Gimme Some Skin" and "I Got A Right." Those two songs alone make Raw Power sound like the dogshit it is (sorry, but Bowie should be drawn + quartered for it). Not to mention "Scene of The Crime" and "Tight Pants" (which is a version of "Shake Appeal" that totally crushes the one on the album)

joseph pot (STINKOR™), Sunday, 5 September 2004 05:13 (nineteen years ago) link

I still have the Bowie-mix on LP and I'll probably keep it forever since the iggy-mix is the widely available CD now. They both sound fucked to me. Bowie's is too weak and Iggy's is too OTT.
Fun House, of course, is perfect as is.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 5 September 2004 05:27 (nineteen years ago) link

i have a bootleg called rough power which has even more fucked mixes than either official mix. shame the quality is so poor.

I still have the Bowie-mix on LP and I'll probably keep it forever since the iggy-mix is the widely available CD now. They both sound fucked to me. Bowie's is too weak and Iggy's is too OTT.

Am having problems understanding the concept of "too OTT" vis a vis The Stooges

Dadaismus (Dada), Sunday, 5 September 2004 10:42 (nineteen years ago) link

I think this has been explained well enough upthread. It's BLARE BLARE BLARE but without the dynamics needed to keep it as interesting as Fun House.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 5 September 2004 10:46 (nineteen years ago) link

i dont think iggy's mix WAS OTT enough. i was expecting it to be even more brutal and fucked up.

splooge (thesplooge), Sunday, 5 September 2004 10:47 (nineteen years ago) link

If he had gone even further it might have been more interesting, yes. I dunno why we can't get a mix of this that just plain sounds good without the bowie-tinny or iggy-blare bullshit.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 5 September 2004 10:50 (nineteen years ago) link

i dont think iggys 'blared' but the extremity of it was surely the whole point? its called RAW power after all, not diverse, well rounded and cohesive power is it?!

splooge (thesplooge), Sunday, 5 September 2004 10:53 (nineteen years ago) link

sure

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 5 September 2004 10:59 (nineteen years ago) link

As a rule though, I don't really respect or appreciate people monkeying around so drastically with their records when they're reissued (especially 20 or 30 years after the fact) so if this was a TS bowie-mix vs. iggy-mix I would have to go with Bowie.
See also the new edition of Blizzard of Ozz with rerecorded rhythm section, the echo drums on the old ZZTop album reissues etc.
The Bowie mix is at least interesting to me cuz it's so weird. I only bothered to listen to the Iggy-mix CD a few times before I sold it back. Frankly, some parts of it were so overdriven that it just sounded like a big pile of shit - on my stereo at least.
Ah, fuck the Stooges. I'm gonna go listen to Sketches of Spain.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 5 September 2004 11:11 (nineteen years ago) link

I've only heard the bowie mix but I don't see what's wrong with remixing the album, I'd like to think that's one of the points of the album and studios beyond just a room with nice accoustics and a microphone; that you could do these things. Otherwise just do it in one session, you know.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 5 September 2004 11:23 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm not sure I follow you. Remixing the album 25 years later is like Star Wars Special Edition type bullshit to me, and quite a different thing than using a multitrack studio to have the ability to tweak it before its release as opposed to just cutting it live to 2-track. Let's remix Exile on Main Street and Sgt Peppers and Pet Sounds while we're at it.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 5 September 2004 11:28 (nineteen years ago) link

i think a certain amount of remixing occurs when they do remastering anyway.

splooge (thesplooge), Sunday, 5 September 2004 11:51 (nineteen years ago) link

i really like iggy's vocals on "dirt" and "1970." it sounds like he spent a lot of time on them. i guess the box set (which i haven't heard and don't necessarily want to) would confirm that...

RAW POWER is so much better in every conceievable way. I don't get all the Fun House love, really. "Down on the Street" and "1970" are brilliant, but as a whole it isn't spectacular. Raw Power is spectacular, from start to finish. Sure, it sort of declines in quality with "Shake Appeal," but the first 6 tracks are, quite possibly, the best strech ever.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Sunday, 13 March 2005 22:44 (nineteen years ago) link

As for the mixes, I prefer the original Bowie mix, except for "Gimmee Danger".. which Bowie absolutely butchered.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Sunday, 13 March 2005 22:54 (nineteen years ago) link

Dude, "Fun House" the song has more rock in it than all of Raw Power. Not that Raw Power's bad ("Death TriP" is fucking amazing), but come on, how can you not get off on how completely out of control Fun House gets starting with "1970"? No music I've ever heard, live or otherwise, has been that unhinged and powerful at the same time, invigorating I guess, as the last three songs on Fun House.

shemp, Monday, 14 March 2005 00:03 (nineteen years ago) link

'1969' / 'i wanna be your dog' (possibly better than RP and a waaay better opening than FH)

Maybe it's whatever one you hear first that does it for you. I still can't imagine liking Raw Power more except I guess it might make sense if you heard that one first. And anyways it's not like we're saying one's good and one's bad but disagreeing about which of two albums that rule rules more.
