Andy sez more in two paragraphs than Ellis can in seven hundred pages, methinks.

He forgot to reference Elvis Costello.

You say this like it's a bad thing.

Everytime I somehow have a conversation with my dad about music he'll always matter-of-factly mention the Doobie Brothers in the same breath as the Stones, Beatles, etc. I always think of this when Ellis slips one of his increasingly gauche Elvis Costello references into one of his books (topped only in horror by Douglas Coupland's Girlfriend in a Coma). So, no, it's not a bad thing.

Addressing the original question: "Porcelain" by Moby in a fiveway tie w/ "In the Air Tonight" by Phil Collins, "Chromium Bitch" by Gary Wilson, "Weak Become Heroes" by the Streets, and "At this Moment" by Billy Vera.

one year passes...
You're looking through the tiny ground-level window of the basement you're hiding in, and you see a car pull in the drive. It's a long low sedan, some kind of Lexus, and the slate-grey sky throws reflections off the glass. Its glides quietly in with a low purr and a soft crunch of gravel. The bumper is inches from your nose. Car doors open. Car doors shut.

listening to Donnacha Costello's "Dry Retch" gave me the Michael Mann feeling today. Still waiting for the goons to show up, though.

(this thread is way too good to be confined to ILM, people!)

Alright so I'm standing with my back to the pitch black ocean. I wear a dark, pinstriped suit -- expensive but conservative. Armani. If my eyes weren't laser-fixed on absolutely nothing 20 feet in front of me, I could watch as my girlfriend scurries around my beach home's master bedroom, packing up her things. She'll be back.

Even though I'm dark-haired, the intense moonlight makes me look like I'm wearing some sort of optical white fright wig. A passage from the middle of Les Thugs' "New Day" plays as earsplitting volume.

That would be better than Brian Eno at least.

rolling up to downtown L.A. in a sleek black sedan, toothpick in mouth, eyes focused unblinkingly on the road ahead, black suit and black shirt on, tangerine dream or perhaps a more propulsive eno track simmering on the stereo. the lights occasionally catch my face, illuminating my single-mindedness: i'm going to get some key info that will allow me to take this fucker down, fucker in question being one javier chavez. he killed my partner. and brother, now i'm going to bring him down.

i'm going 75 per past the skyscrapers. a tough guy in a beat-up ford goes past me, weaving in and out of traffic. i smile to myself. man, driving a car like that in that manner is like a fat girl in a tight dress: you ain't foolin' nobody.

i glide up to the nightclub and park it in front of the valet. i toss him a couple of twenties. 'watch it but don't don't it,' i hiss. 'i'll be back in two minutes, if that'.

the doorman waves me past the line. i get some dirty looks, i shoot them right back. i enter the club. a mmoody techno track throbs. in the corner, sitting up slightly higher than everyone else, light shining down on his bald dome, is hector vazquez. he sees me staring at him. he knows he's made. he bolts. i pursue. he gets about ten feet from the door when i trip him up. 'heeeeyyy man, i was just goin to take a leak', he sputters. fucking liar, always was.

'you and me gonna have a sitdown, hector my man. now buy me a fuckin' drink.'

two years pass...

It’s one year in his life, 1957. That’s the year that, fortuitously, the parts of his life that I most care about in making a human story, all collide. It’s an opera, it’s a family drama, a tragedy, filled with wry humor. It’s a racing film, but it’s not a movie about car racing. It’s a movie about this guy’s life and his passion. He started as a race car driver and then became a racing team manager for Alfa Romeo. His passion was to make the racing team win, so he’s kind of an impresario, conductor or film director, of a race team. He’s an instigator of men, many of whom tragically die young. He’s very close to death and death is very close to him. His father died young, his brother died young. In the year of 1957, of the seven Ferrari drivers, only two were left alive at the end. He is passionate, plenty of libido. There’s part of him that’s like a metronome. As an engineer, he’s precise, like a master draftsman. At the same time, he has passion. There are other women in his life. Sex, food, death. There is a contradiction between chaos on one hand and the precision with which you determine the diameter of an exhaust valve, on the other. Someone in London who really knew the heart of this, who’s Italian, said it sounds like what you’re doing is making something so intensely local that it’s universal. And that’s it. The film is about life, danger, passion, racing with volcanic temperament throughout.
