wow. i never paid attention to the lyrics of the sm song. tim's post prompted me to look it up and my love for it has tripled as a result. is that what stephin merritt would sound like if he rocked?

you treat me like i was your ocean/you swim in my blood when it's warm.

damn.

who did write it, tim?

jonzun crew "space cowboy" > steve miller "space cowboy" > time "jungle love" > steve miller "jungle love" (which i still like a lot, though it's not nearly one of the best songs on his best-of). ("take the money and run" is #1 of course)

It's credited to L. Turner and G. Douglas - I don't know who they are.

Didn't Miller call this his punk-rock tune?

Such a rad guitar tone on the SM song.

i was listening to some classic rock station a couple weeks ago, and steve miller talked about how the songwriter (can't remember which one)brought in his song just as the album was being finished, and they cranked the song out in about an hour just in time for inclusion. fun song! i don't think i have ever heard the Time song, maybe i have and i'm just not familiar with the title. the only real impression they made on me was visual, can't really recall any of their songs....

Not my favorite Time song (I'll always prefer "Jerk Out"), but in a pinch I'll take it over SM.

Alfred -

I've been trying to convince everyone that "777-9311" is THE classic Time song, but I'll accept "Jerk Out", or even "Release It". "Jungle Love" is mighty fine though.

Hmm. Well, if we were talking '74 Kool and the Gang rather than '84 Morris Day, my answer'd be different. But "Jungle Love" is my single favourite Steve Miller song, and it's got a real unique lead-guitar-as-rhythm-guitar style that I wish I could copy. And I never gave a shit about The Time. (And the overpraised Morris/Jerome repartee in "Purple Rain" was only enjoyable in relation to the rest of the flick, which really sucked apart from the musical numbers. So there.) So, at least until I take the time to listen to The Time again (which this thread has motivated me to do, congratulations!), the Miller track takes it.

(And in the interest of pledging my continued grooveallegiance to The Funk, I'll take Sly's "Spaced Cowboy" over Miller's near-eponymous track. In a second.)

"Spaced Cowboy" is the one with the yodel, right? If so, best song of all time.
