steeeeve lamacq wins this one by a country mile (or something) Thee few times he sets foot outside ov (fanfare) london he seems unable to spot any "local talent" that doesn't sound like husker du. They give this fux0r like, how many nights a week? His show is unlistenable, and for one who would claim enthusiasm for music, he does a good job ov sounding bored out ov his fuxing skull 90% ov thee time. Hey! is it just me, or was mark radcliffe's evening show pretty good & genuinely eclectic? What happened there?

Norman:

"Hey! is it just me, or was mark radcliffe's evening show pretty good & genuinely eclectic?"

Yes. And how.

"What happened there?"

He went daytime, turned himself into a professional northerner and started playing up his "character" for the daytime audience, and Radio 1 dumbed itself down for its new best friends, its beloved ultra-hedonistic 15-24-year-olds. The old Radcliffe show would be far too clever for them now, I'm afraid.

I'd also like to say that, while Mary Ann Hobbes is immensely irritating as a radio persona, she plays a lot of crap music too. The concept of her show is great, picking up all the electronic stuff that doesn't fit into Dreem Teem/Pete Tong/Judge Jules/Dave Pierce playlists, but she seems to play the most mediocre pieces of music from every genre she picks up on (Freq Nasty? Lo Fidelity Allstars? Regular Fries?!? Ugh...). And the way after EVERY SINGLE guest DJ slot on her programme she says "Oh, wasn't that just magical?" is just soooooo embarassing...

As for Radio 1 DJs music-and-talkwise, Trevor Nelson is probably my favourite: entertaining, thoughtful, nice voice, flow, plus great upfront R&B & hip hop. Dreem Teem and Westwood are great, too.

There's a DJ called Jason Bentley on KCRW in Santa Monica (Los Angeles area), and he's dreadful. I guess he plays pretty standard electronic music, but then he has this awful accent that I think he made up for himself (if it's real I take this back), and he uses really weird intonation patterns - worse than flight attendants.

On the other hand, Garth Trinidad on Chocolate City sounds really nice, though I don't know enough and haven't listened enough to say anything about the music. Eric J. Lawrence's show Dragnet is good for the music, though he seems overly fond of novelty tunes - some of which are really funny - like this song about McDonald's.

I hate myself. I start a radio show this Sunday on the Triple A station in Boise, Idaho, with absolutely no on-air experience. We did a taping last week. I sounded like a total nerd. But I have a co-host with experience. And they're letting me play cool records (my role on the show), so I'm actually looking forward to the experience.

I cannot stand any of the DJs on WXRT (okay, Wendy Rice and Ken Sumka are tolerable), but BOBBY FUCKING SKAFISH is the worst. So cheeseball, such bad taste in music, so bad with his puns, UGH!

There are no good DJs at all. The only good DJ was Wolfman Jack, and he's dead.

Now if we're talking about, like, non-radio DJs then that's a completely different story.

which reminds me of Funkmaster Flex. "aww yeah it's goin' down, baby. be clear". like nails on a chalkboard.

what about DJ A.M.? Has anyone actually heard him spin? He is in US Magazine every week. Even after his breakup with Nicole Ritchie. He played one of the Oscar after-parties.

People surely can't bitch about Lamacq, Hobbs and the like when Fern Cotton has airtime on weekend Radio 1, can they? Nevermind Sara Cox...

Mark Ronson?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 20 March 2006 17:30 (eighteen years ago) link

Tiesto and Bad Boy Bill were frequent targets among raving friends. Deservedly so.

Paul Van Dyk and Oakenfold who's rumored $10k sets were annointed with trainwreck after trainwreck. Was it the coke or the champagne?

Grooverider on the nights when he was phoning it in but those other nights, the man could really do the job. Goldie, same story but his batting average was way way worse.

DJ Peretz, has he spun anywhere besides Coachella? Speaking of which Madonna in the DJ Tent... whew.

John Aielli. Pretentious, insipid twat. Likes to hear himself talk, and gets way too much airtime (9am to 1pm on KUT--25 hours a week!). I look forward to August every year when he's on vacation. He's the one given high profile interviews of touring artists, and he does no preparation whatsoever. It's painful to hear him say the band's/performer's name wrong every time, even after being corrected. Of course, since he's a local and been on forever, he's revered like some kind of radio god.

patita (patita), Monday, 20 March 2006 20:08 (eighteen years ago) link

Aielli's show used to take up 25 hours a week, now it's just 20. Wanker makes me so mad I forget math!

I love to love DJ AM. I've never heard him, but it's fun to drop his name for a laugh.

"Are you going to that party in the Tenderloin tomorrow?"
"I don't know, will DJ AM be spinning?"

It just turns any conversation into a series of dollar signs.
What about those MISSHAPES?

DJ Conner and DJ Tanner are the best DJ aliases I've ever heard.
